Title: The Dawns Awake, The Grave

The Dawns Awake, The Grave


45 minutes
Students write a journal asking about famous poems or poets they know of and
how they of them.
Students are prompted to share out when finished writing.

1- Instructor will project The Dawns Awake by Otto Leland Bohanan


on the board.
2- Instructor will ask students if they have any initial thoughts or reactions
about the title.
3- Instructor will model each step of TPCASTT using The Dawns
Awake with the students, looking for figurative language,
paraphrasing the poem, discussing tone, theme and shifts.
4- As students and instructor discuss, students will be marking up their
copies of the poem in the same manner as the instructor.
5- In addition to the theme, students will be given some background on
Bohanan, then analyzing how that may have affected his purpose and
tone.
6- Next, students will access The Grave by Robert Blair and begin
analyzing the poem in the same manner, using TPCASTT to guide their
analysis.
7- Their analysis of The Grave will serve as the formative assessment
for this lesson.
After turning in their analysis of The Grave, instructor and students will review
each question, sharing insights and thoughts about the theme, author and purpose
of the poem, including any figurative language found.

Accommodations: all materials will be available in hard copy and via


technology. Instructor will read both poems out loud. Through modeling the
material, students will be able to access the material through various paths.
Modifications: For students who are struggling with the analysis of The
Grave they will be redirected to the analysis of The Dawns Awake, making
sure to focus on each component of TPCASTT with the help of the instructor.

Assessment

The Grave will serve as the formative assessment for this lesson. In their final
summative assessment, students will be writing and analyzing other poems
using TPCASTT.
