Water Infux or Aquifer Drive

The document discusses how oil production rates affect reservoir production characteristics through aquifer drive. It explains that for large aquifers, high production rates do not allow enough time for the aquifer water to expand and maintain reservoir pressure, reducing primary oil recovery. In contrast, low production rates provide sufficient time for large aquifer water to expand with pressure drops, increasing oil recovery during primary production. In summary, the document concludes that low production rates are more favorable for reservoir recovery when the primary mechanism is aquifer drive.

Water Infux or Aquifer Drive

Explain the efects of high and low oil production rates

towards reservoir production characteristics.

In relationship to reservoir pressure, a reduction in reservoir pressure

causes the aquifer (water below the oil in the reservoir) to expand and flow
into the reservoir. The drop in pressure is caused by the production of the
reservoir fluids. In addition to that, the total compressibility of the aquifer is
directly related to the total of water and pore compressibility as the pore is
completely saturated with water.
For a small aquifer, the production rates does not influence greatly
on the expansion of the aquifer as the pressure decreases. This is because
the reactions of the decrease in pressure is instantaneously transmitted
throughout the aquifer.
For a very big aquifer, when the pressure fluctuates there will be a
time delay of the reactions of the aquifer as the pressure drop has to be
transmitted throughout the large amount of water in the aquifer. As a result,
aquifer drive is totally depends on the time.
Thus, if the oil production rate is high, then for the water in the large
aquifer will not have enough time to expand thus reducing the degree of
pressure maintenance. This reduces the production of oil through primary
recovery.
If the oil production rate is low, then the water in the large aquifer will
have sufficient amount of time to expand in relationship to the pressure
drop of the reservoir. This increases the amount of oil that is able to be
recovered during the primary recovery stage.
In conclusion, low production rates are more favorable when using the
aquifer drive as the primary recovery mechanisms.
