like guitars and fiddles, are going back through the music of
the last century, how they are absorbing it, and how well they are
The film was filled with live performances of some of the folk
songs that had survived the McCarthy hearings. Some of the
songs, like Fare Thee Well (Dinks Song), were a hundred years
old; some, like The Auld Triangle and Five Hundred Miles,
had just been written but sounded a hundred years old. In order
to get attention for a film that was not exactly on the beat we
decided to throw a concert featuring the actors and musicians
who had performed in the movie and on the soundtrack.
We also invited members of the extraordinary community of
musicians who have coalesced around this old music and
have kept it alive in the wake of the most recent technological
revolutionto join us that night. We asked them to perform
an old song and one of their new songs.
Town Hall has been the site of many important and historic
events, and what happened there that night was, to my way of
seeing things, as significant as the mysterious, laconic, and,
I have to say, monumental film that had incited it. Several
new stars emerged from their performances that evening
The Secret Sisters, Lake Street Dive, The Milk Carton Kids,
Rhiannon Giddens, and Punch Brothers all proved themselves
as good as the best as they took the stage next to Hall of
Famers Joan Baez and Elvis Costello, and established younger
artists like Gillian Welch, The Avett Brothers, Willie Watson,
Conor Oberst, Colin Meloy, Marcus Mumford, and Jack White.
I should mention that the star of Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar
Isaac, killed two songs from the film that night.
But that night, it didnt matter who had done what. Every artist
was a part of a community of artists. They were all in support of
each other. It was an evening of deep generosity that I am grateful
to have witnessed and am happy to have recorded so that you
might hear, at least, what happened that fall evening in Town Hall.
