    Theseprotectedareasareespeciallyknownforseveral
    threatenedandendemicspeciesincludingNilgiriThar,thegrizzledgiantsquirrel,theNilgiriwoodpigeon,
    elephant,thegaur,theNilgirilangur,thesambar,andtheneelakurinji(thatblossomsonlyonceintwelveyears).

    Therehasbeenactiontoaddresstheproblemsofpropertytakeoversbythelandmafiathathave,accordingto
    successivegovernments,plaguedthearea.In2011,thegovernmentestimatedthat20,000hectaresoflandhad
    beenillegallyappropriatedanditlaunchedacampaignofevictionsthathadfirstbeenmootedin2007.[7]

    TheregioninandaroundMunnarvariesinheightfrom1,450meters(4,760ft)to2,695meters(8,842ft)above
    meansealevel.Thetemperaturerangesbetween5C(41F)and25C(77F)inwinterand15C(59F)and
    25C(77F)insummer.[8]Temperaturesaslowas4C(25F)havebeenrecordedintheSevenmallayregion
    ofMunnar.[9]
