    General Learner Expectation 27: Observe objects floating on and moving


    through water, and evaluate various designs for watercraft.
    Learn how to modify a watercraft to increase its stability in water.
    Students will:
    Understand the features of a catamaran that make it stable in water
    See that increasing the size of a boat increases stability
    Students will write down their observations on an activity sheet
    After the experiment there will be group discussion, then the
    students will write down what they have learned
    Plastic tub
    Three boats: basic boat, bigger boat, and catamaran boat
    Water
    Enough pennies to unbalance the boats
    Activity sheets
    Fill tub with water before start of the lesson.

    Hand out activity sheets to class.


    Tell them we are going to do an activity with boats.
    Gather the students in front of the tub of water.
    Place first boat in the water. Stack pennies on outside edge of the boat to
    create instability. Have students tally how many pennies were placed until
    they began sliding off. Take first boat out.
    Place second boat in the water. Ask students how they think it will compare
    with the first boat. Repeat as with the first boat.
    Show class the catamaran boat. Place in water and ask students how they
    think it will compare with the other boats. Repeat experiment as with the
    previous boats.
    Discuss the results with the class.
    Guide the students to a conclusion of what they learned from the activity.
