Volumetric Analysis

This document discusses volumetric analysis and titration techniques. It provides details on the process of making a standard solution, including weighing ingredients accurately, transferring the dissolved solution to a volumetric flask, and diluting it to the measurement line. The document also gives an example calculation for determining the mass of sodium carbonate needed to make 250mL of a 0.05M solution. Titration is described as a common and accurate chemical analysis method that involves reacting a standard solution of known concentration with an unknown sample.

Volumetric analysis

Introduction

A chemical analysis is based on the measurement of the volume of a

solution. The main example of this is a titration. Titration technique it is also
used in many industries. This technique is one of the quickest, convenient
and accurate methods to identify the amount of substance in the samples.
Titration is when a standard solution reacts with a solution with an unknown
concentration. We use titrations to get accurate results. You need to use
standard solution and one whose concentration is known. Titration is also
used to find out the concentration of an unknown solution. Quantitative
chemical analysis is about the quantity of the chemical in the substance.
A standard solution is when the concentrations are known precisely. It is
important that the correct mass of substance is measured accurately when
making the solution. It is also important that the solution is transferred
successfully to the volumetric flask.

Apparatus

Balance machine
Beaker
Sodium carbonate
Distilled water
Glass rod
Volumetric flask
Pipette

Method for making a solution

• First gather all the equipment that is needed

• Set up the balance and place the beaker on it then tare it so its on zero
• Carefully add the substance into beaker and weigh it(record this mass)
• Add distilled water to the beaker
• Use a glass rod to stir the solution till the substance is dissolved
• Transfer the solution to a volumetric flask(rinse the beaker and glass
rod with more water so none of the solution is wasted)
• Add water to the volumetric flask till it reaches the line(use a pipette
to add the last few drops so it does not go over the line)
• Put back on the lid on the volumetric flask and turn the flask couple of
times so the solution is mixed
• Last of all label your flask with your name, date and contents

Calculations

Mass of substance needed (m) = solution concentration x Mr x volume of solution

1000

Required preparation
250cm3 of 0.05mol dm-3 sodium carbonate solution

0.05m sodium carbonate in 250ml mass of needed substance = concentration

x Mr

Mr = Na2 CO3
Na2 = 23 x 2 = 46
C = 12 x 1 = 12
O3 = 16 x 3 = 48
106

= 0.05 x 106 x 250

1000
= 1.3325g
