Firstly, what is Social Media Optimisation?
What is SMO?

• As well as Search Engine Optimisation, web sites can


undergo a process of Optimisation for Social Media, e.g.
o Facebook
o Twitter
o Digg
• In this case, with the intent of attracting unique visitors or
potenial clients to website content
What is SMO?

• SMO falls in to two categories:-


 
• Feaures added to content
 RSS Feeds, social news, sharing buttons, user rating,
polling tools, "Like"-ing, Logging in with
Facebook/Twitter credentials
 
• External promotional activities
 Promotional activities in social media aside from the
content being promoted
 Blogging, commenting on other blogs, participating in
discussion groups, and posting status updates on
social networking profiles
What is SMO?

• Features can be built in to a websites design or content:


o Allowing content to be shared easily over the internet 
o Attracting visitors/potential clients via social media
o Building relationships with future and existing clients

    affect Software Testers?
How SMO will affect Software Testers
• Social Media will become an essential part of Software
design in the future
o Testers will need to understand SMO early on in the
SDLC 

• Marketing departments will have greater say in Software


Development
o Testers may need to interact more with Marketing
Department
 
• Software will essentially market itself and contain Marketing
Tools as standard 
o Testers may need to become Marketing Gurus
 
How SMO will affect Software Testers

• Obviously Testers will need to test the interactions between


all the elements and interconnected systems.

• Testers who do not embrace social media will be left behind
