Buried Ring Earthing

This document recommends burying a closed loop conductor around the perimeter of a building's foundation as an effective and economic method of earthing or grounding the building. The resistance of such a buried earthing electrode can be calculated based on the length of the conductor and resistivity of the soil. Connecting reinforcing rods in the foundation's concrete work to the buried electrode improves earthing. For a new ST Radar building, the document proposes burying such a loop electrode to provide additional protection from leakage currents, lightning effects, and static charges, in addition to the planned main earthing system. No instruments will be connected to this buried electrode.

Additional protection of ST Radar Building from Leakage

current/lightening
Buried ring method:

This Type of earthing is strongly recommended , particularly in the case of a new building.

Very effective & economic method of obtaining a low-resistance earth connection is to bury a
conductor in the form of a closed loop in the soil at the bottom of the excavation for building
foundations as shown in Fig.1

The resistance R of such an electrode (in homogeneous soil) is given (approximately) in ohms
by:

; where L = length of the buried conductor in metres

ρ = soil resistivity in ohm-metres

The electrode should be buried around the perimeter of the excavation made for the foundations.
It is important that the bare conductor be in intimate contact with the soil (and not placed in the
gravel or aggregate hard-core, often forming a base for concrete). At least four (widely-spaced)
vertically arranged conductors from the electrode should be provided for the installation
connections and, where possible, any reinforcing rods in concrete work should be connected to
the electrode.

The conductor forming the earth electrode, particularly when it is laid in an excavation for
foundations, must be in the earth, at least 50 cm below the hard-core or aggregate base for the
concrete foundation.

Fig1: Conductor buried below the level of the foundations, i.e. not in the concrete

The conductors may be:

• Copper: Bare cable ( ≥ 25 mm2) or multiple-strip (≥ 25 mm2) and (≥ 2 mm thick)

• Aluminium with lead jacket: Cable ( ≥ 35 mm2)
• Galvanised-steel cable: Bare cable ( ≥ 95 mm2) or multiple-strip ( ≥ 100 mm2 and ≥ 3 mm
thick)

The approximate resistance R of the electrode in ohms:

where L = length of conductor in metres= L=32mx4=128m perimeter of our building

ρ = resistivity of the soil in ohm-metres= ρ = 35000 Ohm cm.

Hence R= 2x350/(32x4)= 5.46Ohm

Since all column will be connected with each other by metal rod, hence any leakage current due
to aging of wire/cable(inside conduit/at the joints)will be dangerous to human being .The idea is
to connect this buried earthing for connecting the metal conductor in outer pillar(column) of Our
ST Radar building. Also any lightening effect on building will also be minimized in this method.

This will also be helpful for anti static charges.

Note: This earthing is in addition to our planned earthing/lightening protector. No

instruments will be connected with this earthing.
