Danny Tarkanian
Danny Tarkanian has become a perennial failed candidate: he has run for office three times in the past eight years and lost every time. This isnt surprising, as Tarkanians numerous ethical issues make him unelectable. Among other things, Tarkanian is currently under a $17 million judgment, handed down by a federal judge for Tarkanians role in a bad property deal. Tarkanian has also had multiple inaccuracies on his FEC reports, was repeatedly delinquent in paying property taxes and was sanctioned by the Nevada Supreme Court for signing a legal document even though he wasnt an active member of the Bar. During the 2010 Senate race, Tarkanian staked out far-right views on immigration reform and campaigned with Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist. Radio and television host Glenn Beck called Tarkanian a Tea Party radical, a designation that Tarkanian bragged about on the campaign trail.

DIAMOND PROPERTIES
2007: Real Estate Investor Robert Dyson Approached Tarkanian To Guarantee A Loan From La Jolla Bank For $14.5 Million, Which Would Then Be Loaned To Dyson At A Higher
Interest Rate. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Court documents state Dyson approached Tarkanian in early 2007 through a mutual associate, Doug Johnson of Johnson Investments, and another plaintiff in the case. Dyson wanted a loan from Vegas Diamond and offered as collateral a development in progress near Anza in Riverside County, Calif. He arranged for Tarkanian to get a loan from La Jolla Bank for $14.5 million which would then be loaned to Dyson at a higher rate of interest after about $2 million was used to pay another note on the Vegas Diamond property, Tarkanian said. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/23/10] After Dyson Defaulted On The Loan, La Jolla Bank Sought To Foreclose On Tarkanians Vegas Diamond Property. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, After Dyson couldn't make good on his obligations, La Jolla sought to foreclose on the Vegas Diamond Property, about 9 acres near the M Resort, Tarkanian said. Tarkanian, a Republican seeking to challenge Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., is among plaintiffs who filed suit Jan. 8 in Clark County District Court against La Jolla Bank and Action Foreclosure Services of California. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/23/10] The Lawsuit Claimed Dyson And La Jolla Bank Worked Together To Defraud Tarkanian. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, The lawsuit alleges the bank worked in concert with real estate investor Robert A. Dyson Jr., who it said defaulted on a $12.5 million loan made through Vegas Diamond Properties, a company owned jointly by Tarkanian and about a dozen other family members The lawsuit seeks to block the foreclosure on the grounds La Jolla knew Dyson was stretched too thin but made the loans anyway without telling the other parties involved. Because of the close connection between Mr. Dyson and La Jolla Bank, La Jolla Bank was well aware of the perilous web created by Mr. Dyson in which it aided Mr. Dyson, the lawsuit states. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/23/10] La Jolla Bank Failed And Was Taken Over By The FDIC. According to the Las Vegas ReviewJournal, In 2010, the Tarkanians sued La Jolla Bank to block it from foreclosing on the property, used as collateral for a $14.6 million loan in 2007 as part of the soured California real estate deal. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Tarkanian's attorney, Gus Flangas, said the FDIC foreclosed on the family property in 2011, placing its value at $3 million. The Tarkanians could be on the hook to make up the difference of the $17 million judgment if they don't win an appeal to the 9th Circuit or if they don't settle with the FDIC. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/31/12] Tarkanian Said He Should Have Put A Microscope On The Deal. According to the Las Vegas Sun, In hindsight, Republican congressional candidate Danny Tarkanian should have put a microscope on a 2007 land deal that went bad and has now left him and his family on the hook for
a $17 million judgment, his lawyer said WednesdayThe judgment is the result of more than two years of legal wrangling over the deal that bankrupted both the original developer, Robert Dyson, and La Jolla Bank, which financed most of the deal. Unfortunately for them, the Tarkanian family, and their partners Doug and Debra Johnson, appear to be the only ones left standing for the FDIC to go after. [Las Vegas Sun, 5/31/12] Tarkanian Primary Candidate Dan Schwartz: I Dont See How You Can Conduct A Serious Campaign, Let Alone Be A House Member, With A $17 Million Judgment Hanging Over You. According to the Associated Press, Despite the uneven odds, Republicans Barbara Cegavske, Dan Schwartz and Danny Tarkanian all argue they can emerge victorious against Horsford if they survive the primary. The district stretches across Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Nye and White Pine counties Last month a federal judge in California signed a $17 million judgment against Tarkanian and his family from a failed real estate deal. The judgment involves a $14.6 million loan Tarkanian and others guaranteed for a developer through a family-owned businesses, Vegas Diamond Properties. I don't see how you can conduct a serious campaign, let alone be a House member, with a $17 million judgment hanging over you, Schwartz said. Truthfully, prior to that, we were optimistic, but not hugely. But I think that has been a game changer. [Associated Press, 6/9/12]

[Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/20/12] Tarkanian Said He Didnt Remember Missing Property Tax Payments; Defended Himself As A Passive Partner. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Now that hes running for Congress, Tarkanian is having to answer for such past financial foibles as well as his apparent new troubles in properly reporting some campaign contributions. Hes coming under the greatest scrutiny as the leading GOP candidate in a crowded field of nine Republicans in the primary race for Nevadas newest 4th Congressional District. Maybe I missed some property tax payments, Tarkanian said. I have no recollection of that since it was so long ago. And I was a passive partner in some of the companies. I would expect the Democrats to track me extremely closely and try to find whatever dirt they can to use against me. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/20/12] University Of Nevada Professor Eric Herzik: If Youre Running For Public Office And Youve Missed Tax Payments Particularly If Then Decry Tax Policies In Any Way You Just Dont Have A Lot Of Credibility. According to Las Vegas Review-Journal, Its also a legitimate campaign issue, said Eric Herzik, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Reno who noted Tarkanian preaches low taxes and enjoys tea party support. If youre running for public office and youve missed tax payments - particularly if you then decry tax policies in any way you just dont have a lot of credibility, Herzik said. Missing tax payments or being late is not an uncommon practice. ... But it can be embarrassing when you run for public office. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/20/12]

FEC COMPLAINT
The Nevada State Democratic Party Filed A Complaint With The FEC Alleging Tarkanian Failed To Disclose Debt Left From His 2010 Run. According to the Associated Press, The Nevada State Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging first quarter campaign reporting irregularities by Republican congressional candidate Danny Tarkanian. The complaint filed Wednesday alleges Tarkanian failed to disclose debt left over from his failed U.S. Senate campaign in 2010. It also questions contributions from some limited liability corporations that did not include partnership attributions on the quarterly report, as well as other possible corporate donations that the complaint alleges are improper. [Associated Press, 5/2/12] Tarkanian Said He Would File An Amended FEC Report. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Democrats said Tarkanian also had not reported at least $66,000 in personal loans he had made to his campaign in 2010 when he ran for the U.S. Senate, losing the GOP primary to Sharron Angle. He planned to file an amended FEC report, his campaign said. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/20/12]
The Complaint Said Tarkanian Took A $500 Illegal Contribution From A Corporation. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada Democrats filed a campaign finance complaint Wednesday charging Republican U.S. House candidate Danny Tarkanian received a $500 illegal
contribution and maybe more. Tarkanian's campaign should not have taken the donation from Haig's Quality Printing of Las Vegas because corporate contributions are against the law, the Democrats said in the complaint sent to the Federal Election Commission. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/3/12] Tarkanian Said He Returned The Contribution After The Complaint Was Filed. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, As a U.S. House candidate, Tarkanian now is trying to avoid any penalty from the Federal Election Commission. The Nevada Democratic Party earlier this month filed a complaint alleging he had accepted some illegal contributions, including $500 from a corporation. Tarkanian's campaign said Friday it returned the contribution from Haig's Quality Printing after reviewing his FEC filing with an attorney and accountant familiar with federal rules. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/20/12]
The Complaint Said Tarkanian May Have Taken Contributions From Three Other Entities That May Be Corporations And Failed To Properly Disclose 14 Contributions From Partnerships. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Tarkanian's latest campaign report to the FEC also is not clear on three other contributions from Nevada entities that might be corporations as well, according to the complaint. Also, the Republican's campaign appears not to have properly disclosed 14 contributions from partnerships and may have accepted an excessive contribution from one of them, according to the complaint. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/3/12] The Nevada State Democratic Party Filed A Second Complaint Alleging Tarkanian Accepted A Contribution From A Donor Who Had Already Hit The Legal Campaign Donation Limit. According to the Associated Press, The Nevada State Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, claiming Republican congressional candidate Danny Tarkanian accepted an illegal contribution and improperly reported campaign spending. Democrats say Tarkanian accepted a $2,500 contribution from a donor who had already hit the legal campaign donation limit. [Associated Press, 6/28/12] Tarkanian Said The Charge Was Completely Inaccurate And The Multiple Donations Came From A Father And Son With The Same Name And Address. According to the Associated Press, Tarkanian told The Associated Press that the charges are completely inaccurate and lazy. He said the multiple $2,500 donations came from a father and son with the same name and address, not a single donor. [Associated Press, 6/28/12]

Immigration
PUBLIC BENEFITS
Tarkanian Proposed Cutting All Social And Health Benefits For Illegal Aliens, Including Education And Health Care. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Illegal immigrants would find an unfriendly and unwelcoming America if Republicans seeking U.S. Sen. Harry Reid's seat were in charge. No more free education, health care or other social benefits, say some top GOP contenders. No more walking the streets without fear of getting questioned by police. And no amnesty, no way, no how for millions of illegal workers collecting paychecks or cash in the nation's
underground economy. We have to take away the incentives for people coming into our country illegally, says Danny Tarkanian, the most vociferous GOP Senate candidate following Arizona's new law allowing police to stop suspected illegal immigrants. [Las Vegas Review Journal, 5/10/10] Tarkanian Said Hospitals Should Treat Illegal Aliens For Life-Threatening Emergencies, Then Deport Them. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, Tarkanian has run on his opposition to illegal immigration in the June 8 primary and when he was a secretary of state candidate in 2006. He said border enforcement must be strengthened, the legal immigration process must be streamlined and illegal immigrants should be denied any taxpayer-funded services, including education and health care. Although he said hospitals should treat life-threatening emergencies, other care should be denied, he said. The problem is theyve expanded that to everything, including a cold, and its overburdening our system, Tarkanian said. If its an emergency, it should be treated; if its not an emergency, it shouldnt. And once they are treated, they and their parents should be deported home. [Reno Gazette Journal, 5/11/10] VIDEO: Asked About His Proposal To Deny Health Care And Education To Illegal Immigrants, Tarkanian Laughed And Said I've Got The Crazy Position That Says, If You Come In The Country Illegally, You're Not Entitled To Taxpayer Benefits. According to a video of The Daily Rundown, Tarkanian was asked, But, sir, I mean, your position is illegal immigrants should not have public education or medical care except for life-saving treatment, right? Tarkanian responded by laughing and saying I've got the crazy position that says, if you come in the country illegally, you're not entitled to taxpayer benefits unless it's emergency health care that should be provided, and then you need to find out if they're here illegally, and then you deport them if they're not. [MSNBC, The Daily Rundown, 2:05, 6/3/10] Tarkanians Senate Primary Opponent Sue Lowden Criticized His Support For Keeping Illegal Aliens Out Of Schools; Tarkanian Accused Her Of Supporting Benefits For Illegal Immigrants. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, Tarkanian also accused his Republican opponent, former state Sen. Sue Lowden, of supporting benefits for illegal immigrants because of a letter to the editor she wrote criticizing his position. Current federal law requires education and emergency health care be provided to all residents. In order to end all government benefits for illegal immigrants and start directing federal law enforcement officers to begin pulling kids out of schools and loading them into vans to get them out of the country, as proposed by Danny Tarkanian, three things must occur, she wrote, saying a new law would have to be passed, signed by the Democratic president and then withstand a certain" court appeal. [Reno Gazette-Journal, 5/11/10]
Harry Reid's worst nightmare. ... We need more politicians that are willing to make a positive stand on stopping illegal immigration like Danny Tarkanian. ... I know the Minutemen will soon show Harry Reid that his failure to enforce our nation's current laws were the reason that real Americans no longer need him in DC [The Hotline, 5/7/10] Gilchrist Said Tarkanian Was One Of The Few Candidates Who Has Taken A Proactive Stance Against This Illegal Immigration Crisis. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Tarkanian proposed stopping all benefits for illegal immigrants as the Republican campaigned in Las Vegas and Reno with Jim Gilchrist, co-founder of the Minuteman Project, which has fought for tougher U.S. border security and sent armed supporters to confront people trying to sneak across. He is one of the few candidates who has taken a proactive stance against this illegal immigration crisis, said Gilchrist, who has endorsed Tarkanian's campaign. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/11/10] Gilchrist Said Tarkanian Was The Candidate Who Stood Out The Most Visibly With His Rhetoric. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, An anti-illegal immigration advocate who has drawn nationwide attention for what critics say are extreme views on immigration has endorsed Las Vegas businessman Danny Tarkanian in the Nevada Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Out of all of the candidates running for U.S. Senate, he's the one who stood out the most visibly with his rhetoric, said Jim Gilchrist, co-founder of the Minutemen Project, which recruits volunteers to patrol the U.S. border and report illegal crossings to law enforcement. If you're willing to talk about it, you're willing to do something about it once you get to office. [Reno Gazette Journal, 5/11/10] Gilchrist Said Tarkanian Was The Only Candidate I Trust To Fight Alongside. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Tarkanian is running a radio ad called Radical Tea Party that highlights his connections to people in the movement, leaving the impression he has formal backing. The ad says conservative talk show host Glenn Beck called Tarkanian a Tea Party radical. And Sarah Palin's father, Chuck Heath, calls Tarkanian another strong conservative. Nevada Tea Party activist Barbee Kinnison says she supports him and he'll beat Harry Reid. And Jim Gilchrist, founder of the anti-illegal immigration group Minuteman Project, says Tarkanian is the only candidate I trust to fight alongside. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 6/4/10]
Minuteman Volunteers Said They Wished It Was Legal To Kill Illegal Aliens. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, At Station Two, Minuteman volunteers grilled bratwursts and fantasized about murder. It should be legal to kill illegals, said Carl, a 69-year old retired Special Forces veteran who fought in Vietnam and now lives out West. Just shoot 'em on sight. That's my immigration policy recommendation. You break into my country, you die. [Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, Summer 2005] Gilchrist Falsely Claimed That The FBI Was Helping The Minuteman Project To Root Out White Supremacists. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, Early this year, white supremacist and neo-Nazi Web sites began openly recruiting for the Minuteman Project. In response, Gilchrist and Simcox proclaimed that neo-Nazi Skinheads and race warriors from organizations such as the National Alliance and Aryan Nations were specifically banned from participating. Pressured by journalists to explain exactly how they planned to keep these undesirables out, the two organizers said they were working with the FBI to carefully check the backgrounds of all potential Minuteman volunteers, only to have the FBI completely deny this was the case. [Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, Summer 2005] The Southern Poverty Law Center Found One Member Of The Aryan Nations And Six Members Of The National Alliance Among The Minuteman Project Volunteers. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, While most of the Minuteman volunteers were not organized racists, at least one member of Aryan Nations infiltrated the effort, and Johnny and Michael said they were two of six members of the Phoenix chapter of the National Alliance who signed up as Minuteman Volunteers. They said the other four had arrived separately in two-man teams in order to cover more ground and be less conspicuous. They said the Alliance members came out to support the Minuteman Project, but also to recruit new members, and to learn the remote hot zones for border crossers in Cochise County. They said they intended to return and conduct small, roaming, National Alliance-only vigilante patrols in the fall, when we can have a little more privacy, as Johnny put it. [Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, Summer 2005] Gilchrist Said The ACLU Was No Different From White Supremacists. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, The afternoon of April 2, a documentary film director posed Gilchrist in front of Johnny, Michael, and Carl standing shoulder-to-shoulder before the border fence, with their backs to the "sniper's nest" they'd been so fearful of scant hours before. We are not racists, Gilchrist said on camera. We don't endorse racism, and we're not a hate group. We've told white supremacists they're not welcome here, and we've kept them out. The only hate group members here are from the ACLU. [Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, Summer 2005]
ARIZONA SB 1070
Tarkanian Supported The Arizona Immigration Law. According to the Associated Press, Top Nevada Republican candidates taking aim at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid largely agreed on the issues Friday night during a debate sponsored by a tea party-affiliated group. GOP front-runners Sue Lowden, Danny Tarkanian and Sharron Angle joined three other candidates in pledging to fight for tax cuts and less spending and against the health care reform law if electedCandidates in both races also supported the Arizona bill signed into law Friday that supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in the state. [Associated Press, 4/24/10] Tarkanian Ran An Ad In Support Of Arizonas Immigration Law. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, The Las Vegas businessman was first to jump on the illegal immigration issue by running radio ads on conservative talk stations to support the Arizona crackdown. He also wants to
cut off benefits such as education, welfare and health care. Thats the fundamental difference between my plan and Sue Lowdens, Tarkanian says in the 60-second ad partly aimed at narrowing her double-digit lead over him in the polls. [Las Vegas Review Journal, 5/3/10] Tarkanian: I Love The Arizona Law. According to Politico, Still, Reid's campaign advisers seem to also relish the opportunity to take on Tarkanian, viewing him as an unproven candidate who has lost twice in statewide campaigns and would be eviscerated through a barrage of attacks that he has yet to face. And some of Tarkanian's own staunchly conservative views are ones that Democrats would be prepared to argue are out of the state's mainstream. I love the Arizona law, he said Sunday, referring to that state's tough new law to crack down on illegal immigration that many in this state's growing Latino population detest. [Politico, 6/6/10]
Glenn Beck
Tarkanian Bragged That Glenn Beck Called His Campaign The Tea Party Campaign That Can Win In Nevada. According to a Tarkanian press release obtained via the Washington Independent, Tarkanian said, Glenn Beck has identified our campaign as the Tea Party campaign that can win in Nevada. Why?
