Albertville High School Course Syllabus 2012-2013 Juddie Walker

Instructional Philosophy
We feel that all students have the ability to learn to some degree. We believe that education is the greatest gift that can ever be given. We also believe that all individuals are entitled to receive that gift. We think that we should do our best to reach out and touch our students lives and make a difference. Students need to know we, as teachers, believe in them.

Course Description and Goals


Commerce Communication is a one-half or one credit course that deals either the operation and management of advertising and promotion functions within the marketing system. Students learn how to utilize standard processes to move, store, locate and transfer ownenership of goods and services. Students also learn how to disseminate information about products and services of a company to achieve a desired outcome. Students develop an advertising plan, utilize various forms of publicity to promote a product or service, exhibit an understanding of ethical behavior when promoting a product or service, and use technology to exhibit a clear and concise understanding of promotion of a product or service. The prerequisite for this course is Business Essentials or Business Technology Applications.

OUTLINE:
Demonstrate effective writing techniques used to communicate in the business environment, including enhancing vocabulary and composing concise documents with clarity. Create business documents, including analytical and informational reports, letters. memorandums, minutes, and electronic correspondence to disseminate informaiton. Demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication in the workplace. Determining appropriate business attire for a given situation o Examples: formal meeting, casual meeting, special occasion Demonstrating proper posture, tone, facial expression, and etiquette in the workplace Demonstrating telephone etiquette o Examples: tone, pitch, courtesy Recognizing effective behavior for meetings o Examples: attentiveness, cellular telephone usage

Deliver formal and informal presentations related to a broad range of business topics. o Determining audience and presentation purpose to secure listener attention and interest o Explaining the value of support materials for use in oral presentations Utilize a variety of technology tools to communicate accurately and effectively in the workplace. o Interpreting information from a secondary, electronic, and real time reference using paraphrasing skills o Designing a survey to ontain information o Developing a vision and mission statement incorprating data imported from various sources Apply problem-solving techniques needed to resolve business issues related to ethics Explain the employment process, including career research; job source research, resume preparation; letters of application, acceptance, refusal and resignation; application form completion; and interview preparation o Creating an employment portfolio

Create and deliver commerce and information technology curriculum-related content to an audience. Prepare a financial literacy presentation. Students will participate in an exit interview

Business/Marketing Education Commitment and Goals


The objective of Albertville High School Business/Marketing Education is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for economic success in the twenty-first century. This dynamic and challenging program prepares students for the accelerated changes taking place in the competitive business world. As students gain knowledge and professional experiences, they develop skills essential for success and build a strong foundation that enables them to become productive workers and citizens. The commitment to provide a program of excellence is evident in the broad student-centered and projectbased goals of the Business/Marketing Education curriculum. These goals are:
To encourage critical thinking skills To promote educational values including economic understanding and consumer competencies To promote character growth and development including human relations, good work habits, positive attitudes, and ethical standards To provide a realistic understanding of the work environment To enhance employability skills To reinforce basic skills in such areas as communication, mathematics, and technology To stimulate interest in career development

To foster an appreciation of the free enterprise system

Grading Procedures:
Daily Work Projects Employability Skills A (90-100) B (80-90) C (70-80) D (60-70) F (<59) Students will be graded using a variety of assessment procedures. 40% 40% 20%

Make-up Policy Students will be allowed to make up work missed due to EXCUSED absences within one week of that absence. Arrangements must be made with the teacher immediately upon the students return to school as to the appropriate time for that make-up work. There will be a notebook with the daily assignments provided for students at the front of the room. It is the responsibility of the student to look in the notebook for their assignment. The student must notify the teacher when make-up work has been completed. Work missed due to an unexcused absence will be given a zero.

Lab Fee:
There is a fee associated with this class. Please pay the bookkeeper

Lecture, Demonstration, Questions and Answers, PowerPoint Presentations, Student Presentations, Projects, Videos, Games FBLA: All Students enrolled in English classes are eligible for membership in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Joining FBLA is a great way to supplement your business education. Information about membership and dues will be discussed further at a later time; however, dues are $10 per year (includes $6 national, $2 state, and $2 local) and can be paid to Mrs. Sims beginning now through the end of September.
