Tutorial 1 Jiit Discrete Maths

The document contains problems related to set theory, partitions, and mathematical induction. It asks the reader to represent sets in tabular form, determine if sets are equal or disjoint, find the size of unions and intersections of sets, determine if listings represent partitions of sets, and prove statements using mathematical induction. It also includes word problems about hiring programmers, student course enrollment, and exam failure rates.

1. Represent the following set in tabular form: (i ) A = {x : x 2 2 x + 1 = 0} (ii ) B = {x : x is an even integer & 2 < x 8} (iii ) C = {x : x 2 + 4 = 0 and x is real} (iv ) D = {x : x Z and x 2 < 12} 2. (a) Which of the following sets are equal A = {x : x N , x < 4} B = {x : x 2 3 x + 2 = 0} C = {x : x 3 6 x 2 + 11x 6 = 0} (b) Let A = {1, 2,... , 8, 9} , B = { 2,4, 6, 8} , C = {1, 3, 5,7, 9} , D = { 3, 4, 5} and E = { 3, 5} . Which of these sets will be equal to X if the following information is given? (i) X and B are disjoint, (ii) XD and XB, (iii) XA and XC, (iv) XC and XA. 3. Show that we can have A B = A C without B = C. 4. Prove without Venn diagrams that (i ) ( A B) c = Ac B c (ii ) ( A B ) ( A B c ) = A. If A={3,2,1,5,4}, B={7,5,6,4} and C={1,6,5,7} Then show that A ( B C ) = ( A B ) ( A C ) If U={1,2,3,4,5,6,7}, A={1,2,3,5}, B={1,3,4,6}and C={1,2,4,7}find (i) n( A B C ) (ii) n( A ( B C ) ) (iii) n A B c C A computer company must hire 30 programmers to handle system programming jobs and 40 programmers for applications programming. Of those hired, 15 are expected to perform jobs of both types. How many programmers must be hired? Ans: 55 In a class of 35 students, 15 have taken Mathematics. 7 have taken Mathematics but not Biology. Find the number of students who have taken Mathematics and Biology and those who have taken Biology but not Mathematics. Ans: 8, 20 Out of 250 candidates who failed in an examination, it was revealed that 128 failed in the Mathematics, 87 in the Physics, and 134 in the Chemistry.31 failed in the Mathematics and in the Physics, 54 failed in the Chemistry and in the Mathematics, 30 failed in the Chemistry and in the Physics. Find how many candidates failed in: (a) all the three subjects; Ans: 16 (b) the Mathematics but not in the Physics; Ans: 97 (c) the Chemistry but not in the Mathematics; Ans: 80
