1. Explain the following with neat sketches.

(a) Mathematical Finite Element method.


(b) Physical Finite Element Method. [8+8]

2. Derive the finite element equations from the one dimensional second order equation
by variational approach. [16]

3. The members (1) and (2) are circular in cross section with diameters of 10 cm
and 20 cm respectively. Determine the displacement at the node where load is
acting.{As shown in the Figure3} [16]

4. Derive the elemental stiffness matrix and load vector for two noded beam element?
[16]

5. (a) Show that the value of the shape function N1 of node i and node k of a simplex
triangular element is zero and at node 1 is one.
(b) The (x, y) coordinates of the nodes i, j and k of a triangular element are (1,
1), (4, 2) and (3, 5) respectively. The shape functions of a point P located
inside the element are given by N1 = 0.15 and N2 = 0.25. Determine the x
and y coordinates of the point P. [6+10]

6. Derive the element conductivity matrix and load vector for solving 1-D heat con-
duction problems, if one of the surfaces is exposed to a heat transfer coefficient of
h and ambient temperature of T∞? [16]

7. Find the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes for the longitudi-
nal vibrations for the stepped bar. Assume A1 = 2A and A2 = A ;I1 = I2 = I & ;
E1 = E2 = E. [8+8]

1. If a displacement field is described as follows,

Determine the strain components ∈xx , ∈yy , and ∈xy at the point x=1 ; y = 0. [16]

2. Derive stiffness equations for a bar element from the one dimensional second order
equation by variated approach. [16]

3. For the pin jointed truss shown in figure. If E = 200 Gpa, determine{As shown in
the Figure3}

5. On a four nodal quadrilateral plane stress element the nodes are (0, 0), (6, 2), (6,
6) and (1, 5). A concentrated load whose x and y components are 10 kN, 16 kN
respectively is applied at a point (4, 5). Find the equivqlent nodal forces and the
displacement of nodes. [16]

6. Consider a brick wall (0.7 W/m K) of thickness 30 cm. The inner surface is at
280 C and the outer surface is exposed to cold air with heat transfer coefficient of 36
W/m2 K at -150 C. Determine the steady state temperature distribution and heat
flux through the wall. [8+8]

4. A cantilever beam is loaded with point load at end and Uniform distributed load
throughout the beam of length L m. Explain how will you proceed with the solution
using FEM? [16]

5. The coordinates of the nodes 1, 2 and 3 of a triangular element are (1, 1), (8, 4)
and (2, 7) in mm. The displacements at the nodes are u1 = 1 mm, u2 = 3 mm, u3
= -2 mm, v1 = -4 mm , v2 = 2 mm and v3 = 5 mm. Obtain the strain-displacement
relation matrix B and determine the strains εx , εy and γxy . [16]

6. A composite wall consists of 4 cm thick wood, 10 cm glass fiber insulation, and


1 cm thick plaster. If the temperature on wood and plaster faces are 200 C and
-200 C respectively. Determine the temperature distribution in the wall. Assume
the thermal conductivity of wood, glass fiber and plaster are 0.17,0.035and 0.5W/m
K respectively and colder side heat transfer coefficient is 25 W/m2 K. [16]
