EXPRESSING PREFERENCE
1. Explanation Expressing preference is used to express preference or option about something pe ople like. The sentence patterns, are : a) S + like + noun + better than + noun Example : my father likes peanut better than chocolate Or S + like + Ving + better than + Ving Example : I like selling cake better than making cake b) S + prefer + noun + to + noun Example : Rudy prefers apple to grapes Or c) S + prefer + Ving + to + Ving Example : Rudy prefers swimming to playing football d) S + would rather + V1 + than + V1 Example : wenny would rather leave early than wait for him e) S + would prefer to + V1 + rather than + V1 Example : I would prefer to go shopping rather than stay at home EXPLANATORY NOTES PREFERENCE RESPONSE - Would you prefer to infinitive (or infinitive)? - Would you rather infinitive (or infinitive)? - Would you like to infinitive (or infinitive)? - Do you prefer Gerund/Noun or Gerund/Noun? - What would you rather do: Infinitive or Infinitive? - Do you like Noun or Gerund better/ more than Noun or Gerund? nfinitive . - I prefer Noun or Gerund - Id rather Infinitive (than Infinitive). - I like Nounor Gerund better than Noun or Gerund . - I like both. - I dont like either of them. - Neither. Example of conversation showing expressing preference : What would you like to order, madam? : Id like to have a salad,please. : Would you prefer vegetable salad or fruit salad? : I prefer vegetable salad to fruit salad, please. : Certainly. What would you like to drink? Ice tea perhaps? : Id rather have lemon tea without ice at this time of the day.
IF Clause Type 1 From If + Simple Present, will- Future Example : If I find her address, I will send her an invitation. The main clause can also be at the beginning og the sentences. In this case, dont use a comma. Example : I will send her an invitation if I find address. Conditional sentences type I refer to the future. An action in the future will o nly happen if a certain condition is fulfilled by that time. We dont know for sur e whether the condition actually will be fulfilled or nor, but the conditions se ems rather realistic- so we think it is likely to happen. Example : If Jhon has the money, he will buy a Mercedes Benz.
IF Clause Type 2 From If + Simple Past, main clause with conditional I (= Would + Invinitive) Example : If I had a lot of money, I wouldnt stay here. Were instead of Was In IF clause type 2, we usually use, were` - even if the pronoun is I, he, she o r It-. Example : If I were you, I would not do this.
