Balthasar Teashop
Kerala was once a caste-ridden society. Social reformers tried to change it by practicing mixed eating with the other castes or communities. Teashops made it a way of life in Kerala. They were the products of two important social changes. The first was the freedom of movement dalits got. And the second was the coming of a money-based economy. As the entry was based on money, all were equal at a tea shop. The atmosphere itself was tastier than the food served. Many films use teashops to tell their stories. In Neelakkuyil, it is the only modern and secular space untouched by the codes of caste system. Though the 'dream-spaces' in it look alike, They are not real. In Thurakkatha Vathil, the message of the film is given from the teashop. Many other films like Raarichan Enna Pauran, Bhargaveenilayam, Neelavelicham, Muracheru- kkan, Kodiyettam, Olavum Theeravum, Mukhamukham etc. make use of the space of teashops. Its regular presence in movies shows cinema's role as a document of our lives and times.
