Industrial Communication Solutions

An interesting cabling concept for industrial automation has established itself under the keyword ICS (Industrial Communication Solutions). It concerns the structured cabling of industrial plants similar to the cabling used for office communications. Ethernet in industry is increasingly asserting itself because the communication standard used in countless office applications can be classified today as being simple, cost-effective and highly flexible, as well as having broad support on the system side. Industrial Ethernet and bussystems are proven standards in the industry. More and more plants are completely equipped with these systems and connected with special cabling, functioning in every environment. Access to specific areas throughout the network makes adjustments and changes easily manageable. This results in few periods of downtime and, as a result, gains in productivity.

MICE is the heading under which the demands for wiring is covered in a standardized way. A set of requirements is defined which consists of mechanical (M), ingress (I), climatic (C) and electromagnetic (E) components. A difference is made between three categories (1, 2 and 3) : office (1), light industry (2) and heavy industry (3). The crucial factor: a newly designed product, built up from experience must demonstrate the right combination of properties for its envisaged purpose.

The main criterion when categorising as light and heavy duty is the impermeability against dust and/or liquids. The industrial environment is generally harsher and the cable is affected by: - chemical substances such as oils, solvents, etc.

- constant movement or vibration during use e.g. in drag chains - wider range of ambient temperatures - electromagnetic influences both on the cable as well as caused by the cable.

Draka is able to produce Industrial Ethernet and buscables with all kinds of protective layers. Upon request Draka can provide the MICE classification for the various cable designs.
