PE AND XLPE INSULATED
AERIAL BUNDLE CABLES
The concept of insulated aerial cables was developed in the early 1960s
ln Lurope to provloe a rellable, sa|e ano economlcal alternatlve system o|
electrlcatlon.
Tbe oevelopment was accelerateo oue to progress acbleveo ln tbe elo o|
syntbetlc lnsulatlng materlals sucb as polyvlnyl (PvC) ano polyetbylene (PL).
Crossllnkeo polyetbylene (XLPL) was later aooeo to tbe llst.
Natlonal stanoaros |rom a |ew Luropean countrles bave been lssueo speclcally
for insulated aerial cable employing designs from experiences and research.
Altbougb tbese are malnly |or low voltage lnstallatlon stanoaros |or blgb
voltage cables bave been oerlveo |rom speclcatlons sucb as |LC 60502 wblcb
incorporates several extruded dielectrics for cables up to 30 kV.
Alumlnlum ano lts alloys are useo unlversally as conouctors or neutral supports
oue to tbelr lnberent llgbt welgbt, steel wlres traoltlonally useo ln ACSP
constructions are used as the supporting catenary especially for heavier medium
to high voltage cables.
This cables permit longer spans, lower mounting, minimum support, and
slmplleo lnstallatlon, partlcularly among trees or ln congesteo areas. |t also o||ers
malmum personnel sa|ety ano protectlon agalnst outage. Peslstance to abraslon,
Nelng, ano e||ects o| beat, molsture, sunllgbt ano colo assure blgb oepenoablllty

The aerial bundled cables designed for overhead distribution lines have all conductors made of aluminium1350 and are insulated
wltb XLPL. Pbase ano neutral cores are lalo up ln a bunole wltb a le|t bano lay. Cables are rateo at 0.6/1(1.2) kv ano con|orm to AS/
NZS 3560.1.
The main advantage of aerial bundled cables include :
1. Lase o| erectlon ano strlnglng
2. Practlcally no tree - trlmmlng requlreo
3. Less malntenance
CONSTRUCTION
1 Conouctor (For botb pbase ano neutral) :
The conductors shall be of aluminium1350 wires and are compacted circular stranded.
2 |nsulatlon :
Tbe conouctors sball be etruoeo wltb Cross-llnkeo Polyetbylene (XLPL) materlal as lnsulatlon. Lacb pbase core ls markeo wltb
numerals ano letters 1 ONL, 2 TWO or 3 THPLL ano wltb one rlb, two rlbs or tbree rlbs to oenote tbe pbases. Tbe neutral
core carrles equally spaceo rlbs rlgbt rouno tbe clrcum|erence.
3 Assembly :
The cores shall be laid up with a left hand (S) lay.
