Room 204 Update March 10, 2013 Spring Street School Mrs.

Liportos class

General Information I will be out on Thursday and Friday of this upcoming week. During this time Ms. Ballard will once again be helping out in the classroom. If you need to send a note about dismissing your student or anything else, please send it to Mrs. Adair in the office. I am not sure if I will be able to send out a newsletter next week so please dont worry if you dont receive one. The next few weeks are going to be very busy in our classroom. We will be reviewing for the upcoming Language Arts MCAS assessments, both in writing and reading. Tuesday, March 19th is the MCAS Composition assessment and the week after on Wednesday, March 27th and Thursday, March 28th are the MCAS English Language Arts assessment. These days are going to very long and exhausting for the students, so I strongly encourage them to get plenty of sleep the night before, eat a big breakfast that morning, and to bring in a healthy snack that can be eaten before the test begins. The language arts homework is going to be a packet of grammar review. This packet will go home on Monday and will be due on Friday. I will encourage students to work on a little bit each night and to NOT leave it all for Thursday evening! Also, the students will be working on maps in social studies class on Tuesday. If they do not finish them during class they will need to bring them home to complete. SUPER READERS The following students have read over 10,000 minutes this year and have been added to the Liporto Super Readers Hall of Fame! Helen Lim 2/15/13 Writing We will be doing some last minute tune-ups on our personal narrative writing skills this

week. The kids did a great job revising sentences to make them power sentences last week. Well continue to nail down our revision skills. To many fourth grades, revision means rereading your story, changing a few words and then checking for editing. Were trying to get them to understand that revision is so much more such as adding in figurative language, looking for areas to stretch, changing sentence beginnings, etc. Well also be taking a lot at some writing that was done by other fourth grade students and critiquing their work. Language Arts Language arts this week will have us continuing to look at digging into texts and locating information to answer questions. Students will get a chance to work in small groups to practice these skills. We will also work on analyzing, responding to and creating some poetry inspired by spring. Math This week, we will continue to focus on area and perimeter. One of the biggest challenges of this unit is having the kids remember the difference between the two terms. I try to help them with this by reminding them that the peRIMeter of a shape is the RIM or outside measurement. Well be learning the various formulas for figuring out the area of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms this week. For some online games to practice with area and perimeter, check out the following site:

The Midwest is vast and full of farming and manufacturing. The children will complete their region map, begin practicing states, Postal Codes, and capitals, along with looking at the economy of the region. Science On Tuesday we will complete our science court case about the laziest worker at Robocorp. Then later in the week we will begin our last unit of the year on magnets

and electricity. We will begin with magnets, focusing on attraction, repulsion and induced magnetism. Look for more information about this unit coming home in the Monday folders. Classroom Birthdays This Month
