KCL / Asphsol/ Poly Mud

This document provides information on various water-based and oil-based mud systems, including their typical components and mixing procedures. It discusses systems such as KCl/polymer mud, KCl/polymer/asphalt mud, salt saturated polymer mud, and KCl/Flo-Pro mud for water-based systems. For oil-based systems, it outlines mixing brine, emulsifiers, wetting agents, viscosifiers, and weighting agents in the proper order. Mud testing procedures are also summarized, including measuring total hardness, chloride content, mud cake thickness, and rheology values.

Kcl \ asphsol\ poly mud

This system is advanced or modified system of KCL\ POLY mud , the both systems depend on polymers reaction The polymers reaction generally tends to form series of chains , bonded to each other , this develop the thyxotropic properties of the mud ( gel strength , viscosity , yield point ) , POLY PAC UL ( high temp. additive ) and POLY PAC R are additives develop the viscosity which consequently reduce the water loss , the most important thing in dealing with polymers system is to maintain good environment to react properly as PH control ( 8.5 10 ) , acaustic soda is main additive to control PH value where acaustic soda refresh the polymers reaction . The bottom hole temperature should be consider when dealing with polymers where there is certain polymers types for high temperature cases as XCD-POLY . All the water base mud systems preparation start with water treatment , where adding of acaustic soda ( to react with Mg++ and forming Mg (OH)2 ) and adding of soda ash ( to react with Ca++ and forming CaCo3 ) to get water with minimum hardness ( total % of Mg & Ca) where presence of this material affect polymers reaction . By preparation of Water end , the system is ready to mix polymers with optimum % related to well condition , adding KCL as percent recommended in mud program . In case of high viscosity adding of thinner as SPERSENE is the best solution . FOR ASPHASOL SYSTEM There are some additives as ASPHASOL : it is asphaltic (hydrocarbon ) material used to inhibited shale zones by controlling water loss and bridging The well bore with thin film preventing water loss , swelling & sloughing , this product used by 4 lb/bbls This will give double inhibition where KCL + ASPHASOL are good inhibition agents . CALCIUM CARBONATE ( sized ) : this material is used mainly as bridging agent where there is trouble with high caving and wash out where it is react to form thick cake against high porosity , loose sand zones .And due to bad of effect of Barite as weighting material especially against pay zone , it is recommended to use calcium carbonate as weighting material where it is easy to remove any skin due to calcium carbonate invasion by acid job. RESINEX :it is resin material used in high temperature well as polymers . AS RULE OF THUMB , the recommended concentration of 100 bbls KCL /ASPH/POLY with 7% KCL is : Product Acaustic soda Soda ash Poly pac UL Poly pac R XCD poly asphasol CaCo3 resinex CMC - HV CMC LV Used for Mg ++ removal Ca++ removal W.L + visc ( high temp) W.L + visc W.L + visc. MUD TEST : 1. total hardness :

A/ Ca++:
get 1 ml From filtrate sample + 1ml of CLAVIER II + 2-3 drops of 8N . NaOH (as PH agent ) : titration the mix with EDTA solution , just when pink color appears , determine the amount of EDTA in ml. Used Ca++ ( mg/l) = EDTA (ml) * 400

B/ Mg++ :
get 1 ml From filtrate sample + 1ml of MUROXID + Buffer solution (as PH agent ) : titration the mix with EDTA solution , just when color changes , determine the amount of EDTA in ml. Used Mg++ ( mg/l) = Ca++ EDTA (ml) Mg++ EDTA (ml) * 243

2. chloride percent :
get 1 ml from filtrate sample + K2CrO4 ( potassium dicormate ) then yellow color will appear : titration with Ag No3 ( silver nitrate ) , just when color become dark brown , determine amount of Ag No3 CL (ppm) = AgNo3 (ml) *10000

mud cake & water loss :

100 psi is applied to mud sample for 7 min. (in this case result of filtrate multiple by 2 ) or for hr. , the mud cake is thickness check from filtration paper and filtrate sample represent water loss this sample used for Ca++ , Mg++ & Cl- test .

Yp &PV :
Using rheometer to measure shear force at 600 , 300 RPM PV = 600 reading 300 reading Yp = 300 reading PV

OIL BASE MUD

1. 2. Mix brine with lime in separate pit ( water +CaCl2 with the recommended concentration +lime (2-3ppb) . mix the oil with the following oil base products: 1 Emulsifier as Versacoat. 2 Wetting agent as Versawet. add NO#1 on NO#2 very slowly with sheering . add viscosfier and gelling agent on the mixture as VG-69. Add Organophiling agent to improve low sheer reading as Versamod . Add weighting materials as barite or CaCo3.

3. 4. 5. 6.

All the above mentioned materails used with the same arrangement and with the recommended program conectration . NB: You have adjust the O/W ratio as recommended in the program. For Ex. If u need to prepare 500 bbls O/W ratio = 80/20 , you need the following quantities from water and oil Water = 100 bbls water fraction from CaCl2 table. Oil = 400 bbls Water fraction means ( total quantity of water needed minus the volume which produced as result of using CaCl2.
