Foreword
2012 was a millesimeof exception, celebrating the 20th edition of Le French May. With a wide selection of programmes covering all major artistic disciplines, the festival enjoyed a great success and a massive public attendance. Art and culture are key to make Hong Kong the major hub it deserves to be, and I am proud that this festival, thanks to the constant support of its audience, partners and friends, has become such a strong and unmissable Hong Kong cultural institution. Aiming at sharing the best of French and international culture, Le French May invests all Arts fields, from dance to opera, from cinema to visual arts, from fashion to gastronomy, with a constant wish to surprise the public. Presenting the latest contemporary creation as well as some major classical parts of French heritage, Le French May gives a taste of what is the DNA of France. With the success of its 20th edition, Le French May became one of the most expected festival in Asia: building on that achievement, the 2013 edition will showcase 18 exhibitions, 50 performances and 50 screenings during more than two months. This year, Macau will become a very significant partner of Le French May, beginning with the outstanding exhibition of Napoleon imperial treasures at the Museum of Art and followed by important performances and exhibitions in various cultural institutions, building on the cultural tradition of Macau. For the first time, Le French May will focus on one particular theme: the 1920s, a boiling period for art, fashion and society. With an extremely dense programme, Le French May 2013 will immerse the audience in the heart of the Crazy years. A decisive period, when France was the center of the art world and witnessed the convergence of multiple talents and influences. 2013 will also honour the Bourgogne region: rich of millenary history and heritage, of very prolific companies, Bourgogne will be represented through a series of concerts and exhibitions and Le French Gourmay will explore the vast diversity of its food and world renowned wines. More than a French event, Le French May wishes to be a platform for cross-cultural exchanges between artists from different countries and backgrounds. Strong relationships have been established with local companies and orchestras, to produce original creations showcasing the best mix of our cultures: an Opera performance featuring French and international cast coproduced by Opera Hong Kong, a cabaret show with the talented artists of the HK Theatre Noir, a celebration of French composer Francis Poulenc with City Chamber Orchestra and French soloists, dialogues between HK Sinfonietta and harpist virtuoso Xavier de Maistre, etc. Thanks to the support of our instrumental partners, Le French May 2013 will pursue its action towards art pedagogy: presenting art works in public areas, conducting guided tours and masterclasses for students and children or offering tickets to the less privileged. We indeed strongly believe in the necessity to reach out to those who dont have an immediate access to culture. I am particularly grateful for the strong and constant support from our longstanding partners, in particular the Hong Kong Jockey Club, our major partner for the second consecutive year. Year after year, by making this festival possible, they transformed Le French May into a true cultural institution and strongly contributed to the world appeal of this great city. I am confident that you will enjoy every minute of Le French May 2013!

he Hong Kong Jockey Club is very honoured to be the Major Partner of Le French May for a second year, following the successful 20th Edition in 2012. We commend the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and the Association Culturelle France-Hong Kong for organising such a rich and vibrant festivity for the Hong Kong community since 1993. The Jockey Club has been strongly committed to nurturing the citys arts and cultural development for well over four decades. This includes funding the establishment of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1984 and supporting the Hong Kong Arts Festival since its inception in the early 1970s. In the past ten years, our Charities Trust has donated more than HK$1.8 billion for the development and promotion of arts and culture. All this is made possible by our unique not-for-profit business model, which channels the public demand for betting services into widespread community benefits. Le French May 2013 is bringing to Hong Kong another wonderful line-up of internationally acclaimed artists and more varieties of French art forms. The Jockey Club is especially delighted to be supporting four highlight programmes, namely the opera Tales of Hoffman, the musical Le Cabaret, the Jean Cocteau and Ren Burri Exhibitions. We are particularly delighted that home-grown Opera Hong Kong and Theatre Noir are heavily involved in some of these productions, bringing cultural exchanges between France and Hong Kong to a higher level. We are also delighted to be supporting an educational programme for the visual and performing arts events of Le French May 2013. This will benefit some 10,000 young people, including 4,500 less privileged students who can enjoy these performances free. The educational programme offers our younger generation a golden opportunity to appreciate western visual and performing arts, expanding their horizons and inspiring their creativity. It is also the Jockey Clubs great pleasure to celebrate the Festival with special French-themed nights of racing and entertainment at Happy Valley every Wednesday during May as Le French May is in The Valley. I am sure the 2013 Festival will be another resounding success, bringing colour and energy to the people of Hong Kong.

n behalf of Henderson Land Group, once again Grand Mcne (Patron) of Le French May this year, I am pleased to see this notable arts festival presenting a distinguished showcase of French arts and culture for the 21st year in Hong Kong. Having been a sponsor since 2008, we are thrilled by both the increasing attendance and the exciting variety at the festival. l The arts, I believe, has the power to change lives, albeit subtly. The magic of artistic expressions captivates and transports the audience to a world of spirited inspirations. Its appreciation cultivates the mind, its interpretation enlightens the soul. It is dear to my heart that our future generation sees the beauty of life through arts and culture. ll
2008
As part of Henderson Lands CSR commitments, we care for the underprivileged. This year, not only do we continue to give away free Le French May tickets to underprivileged children, we are also collaborating with the organizer in the festivals community outreach programme. Through the programme, underprivileged students are offered the rare opportunity of coming face-to-face with internationally renowned virtuosos at a series of pre-show sessions, immersing them in an unparalleled learning experience. I believe these precious events will bring forth new perspectives in their life journey. l We are honoured to be supporting this celebrated festival. Henderson Land will continue its CSR efforts in arts and culture to promote better quality of life. I wish Le French May every success in 2013. l May the festivals joie de vivre be with you everyday!

Following the success of Carmen in 2012, Le French May and Opera Hong Kong are proud to present The Tales of Hoffmann, a production by Opra de Monte-Carlo, conducted by Emmanuel Joel-Hornak and directed by Jean-Louis Grinda. Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Opera Hong Kong Chorus will perform in the production. The cast is composed of international stars that include French tenor Luca Lombardo, French soprano Isabelle Philippe, French bass Nicolas Cavallier, French Mezzo-soprano Aurhelia Varak, and Irish soprano Sinad Mulhern along with top local singers including Chen Yong, Sammy Chien, Albert Lim, Carol Lin, and Frankie Liu. About The Tales of Hoffmann Premiered at the Opera-Comique, Paris, in February 1881, a few months after Jacques Offenbachs death, this opera revolves around Hoffmann, an ardent lover, poet and writer who tells three stories of his great but unhappy loves that each end tragically thanks to the meddling of his enemy, a supernatural villain and evil genius. Objects of Hoffmanns love and desire include Olympia the mechanical doll; Antonia, the frail and beautiful opera singer who is unable to sing because of a hereditary chest illness; and Giulietta, the Venetian courtesan who, collaborating with the devil, robs Hoffmann of his other self in the form of his reflection. The Tales of Hoffmann is an opera fantastique - the perfect combination of fantasy and classical music with an endless stream of gorgeous melodies, tender and seductive love scenes, bizarre characters and comic, villainous and tragic climaxes. This dark romantic fairytale is a true feast for the eyes and ears. About Jacques Offenbach Born in 1819, Jacques Offenbach was a German-born French composer of the Romantic era. He created a new type of French comic opera called operetta, a style combining political satire with grand opera parodies. His Orpheus in the Underworld (with its famous Can-Can) and La belle Hlne were highly popular in France and throughout the English-speaking world during the 1850s and 1860s. His works remain popular in opera repertory, and in particular, his masterpiece The Tales of Hoffmann.

Micala, a peasant girl, goes to Seville to find soldier Don Jos with a letter from his mother. After meeting with Micala, Don Jos becomes embroiled in a tobacco factory brawl. He is charged by his superior to detain the darling of the town, the gypsy Carmen. Carmen knows her charm is the key to her freedom, but little does she realise, it also unlocks deadly passions. One of the worlds most celebrated Carmens, Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci, stars in this new production with tenor Nikolai Schukoff, who recently repeated his searing performance as Don Jos at New Yorks Metropolitan Opera.

2013 sees the 50th anniversary of Edith Piafs death. On this occasion, Princess Clotilde Courau pays tribute to the world renowned French artist by reading exclusive love letters written by Edith Piaf six months after the death of her true love Macel Cerdan.
About the play A few months after the tragic death of Marcel Cerdan in 1949, Edith Piaf was having a passionate affair with a mysterious man called Tony Franck. From May 1 to 26, 1950, they exchanged several letters in which the artist expressed her love with the lyricism, ardour and intransigence she was famous for. Who was this man? How did this relationship start? How did it end? With her sensual and enchanting voice, Clotilde Courau reads these intimate letters accompanied by French accordionist Lionel Suarez, and takes us on a journey into the intimate universe of La vie en Rose. About Clotilde Courau Clotilde Courau gained recognition amongst her peers when she appeared in her first movie Le Petit Criminel by Jacques Doillon, in 1990, and was nominated for a Cesar Award in the Most Promising Actress category and won a European Film Award for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival. Courau then worked on many successful French films such as La Vie en Rose, Elisa, and Summer Things and acted alongside A-list artists such as Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Rampling, Vanessa Paradis, Isabella Rossellini, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Guillaume Canet, Vincent Cassel, Shelly Winters, and Rupert Everett, to name a few. Highly acclaimed as an actress in France, her fame escalated when she married Emanuel Filiberto di Savoia, a member of the House of Savoy and the grandson of the last King of Italy, and became the Princess of Venice and Piedmont in 2003. This play is currently showing in Roma, London and NYC.

Imagine breathing in the atmosphere of France in a Hong Kong Theatre! Today many of us are under pressure from work and responsibilities, but Le French May believes that everybody has hidden sparkle in their hearts. Let us help illuminate your inner sparkle with a glamorous French Cabaret. Theatre Noir is delighted to present Cabaret des Annes Folles in an unimaginably exciting way that gives audiences a genuine feeling of being transported back to the old days of Paris Cabaret. Eric Le Sage is established as one of the leading pianists of his generation and is a renowned representative of the French piano school. He is celebrated for his subtle sound, real sense of structure and poetic phrasing. When he was just 20 years old, the Financial Times described him as an extremely cultivated disciple of the great French tradition of Schumann piano and in 2010, Die Zeit praised his ideal French piano aesthetics and clarity. About Eric Le Sage Born in Aix en Provence, Eric Le Sage has been the winner of major international competitions such as Porto in 1985 and the Robert Schumann competition in Zwickau, in 1989. He was also a prize-winner at the Leeds International competition the same year, which allowed him to perform under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. He has performed recitals and chamber music concerts in major concert halls worldwide and has been invited to perform as a soloist with some of the greatest orchestras; the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Stuttgarts SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, as well as with conductors that include Armin Jordan, Edo de Waart, Michel Plasson, and Michael Stern. In 2010 Le Sage successfully came to the end of a project that he had cherished and prepared for a long time: Recording Robert Schumanns complete works for piano. The recordings for the independent French label Alpha were awarded the prestigious Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in the summer of 2010. Reviewers from the world over have written elated comments about what is already cited as a reference in the history of Schumann recordings.

Pre-concert talk by Maestro Jean Thorel Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, 19:15 (free admission)
About Francis Poulenc Described during his lifetime as half bad boy, half monk, Francis Poulenc is one of the greatest melodists of the twentieth century. Largely a self-taught composer, he belonged to the Paris-based group of composers Les Six, who led the neo-classical movement that rejected the overstated emotion of early 1920s Romanticism. Following the death of a close friend in the 1930s, Poulenc rediscovered his Roman Catholic faith and replaced the ironic nature of neo-classicism with a new-found spiritual depth. About City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong & Jean Thorel City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) is one of the most active chamber orchestras in the Asian region. Currently in its thirteenth season, the CCOHK gives an annual subscription season of concerts performing with internationally acclaimed artists such as Dame Evelyn Glennie and Sir James Galway. In 2008 Frenchman Jean Thorel was appointed chief conductor. In 2012 the CCOHK released English Recorder Concertos with Michala Petri to international acclaim. The CD was selected as CD of the week by German Music Magazine Klassik Heute.

Chamber musics best representatives from France and Hong Kong join forces for a programme of pure intensity. About Quatuor Manfred Founded in 1986 by graduates of prestigious schools, the Manfred Quartet has become one of the leading prize winners amongst French quartets. The Quartets career was launched in 1989 by winning two major international competitions: Banff (Canada), where for the first time a European quartet was awarded first prize, and Evian (France). Thereafter they were invited to play with renowned musicians, including Mstislav Rostropovich, Yuri Bashmet, and Tatiana Nikolayeva, as well as with musicians of their generation such as Claire Dsert, Raphal Pidoux, Florent Hau, and Pascal Moragus, and to perform around the world: Berlin, Amsterdam, London, New York, Japan, China, and Russia. The Quartet concentrates on the romantic and early twentieth century repertories and recorded works of Schoenberg, Berg, Prokofiev, Schumann, Mozart and Chausson. About RTHK Quartet The RTHK Quartet was founded in 2009 with a view to promoting the genre of chamber music and encouraging the art of chamber music playing in Hong Kong. Four outstanding musicians, violinists Ayako Ichimaru and Le Hoai-nam, violist Elvis Chan and cellist Laurent Perrin, share a common passion for chamber music, and are the founding members of the RTHK Quartet. They introduce the audience to the rich world of chamber music, including some of the most profound and powerful music ever written. The quartet members, who are all Hong Kong-based musicians, come from different parts of the world: Japan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Luxembourg. This diverse background reflects not only Hong Kongs cosmopolitan environment but also the universal appeal of music. PROGRAMME RAVEL

Exactly 100 years ago, Stravinskys The Rite of Spring announced the birth of 20th century music in spectacular style. The scandal of the premire ended in a riot. This programme marks the centenary by recreating the programme that the first audience heard Chopins delightful waltzes in orchestral form, evoking the elegance of classical ballet, followed by the violence and mayhem of Stravinskys master work. Patrons are encouraged to refrain from rioting! As a tribute to the city where this took place, the programme begins with the Paris Symphony Mozarts salute to Parisian style.

One artist, five languages: French, Arabic, Turkish, Greek and Armenian, as well as an impressive number of instruments that include the oud and bouzouki, an array of percussion, the flute, harmonica and Columbian bamboo saxophone. Origine Orient is a voyage into sound that explores the contours of the Mediterranean region. It is primarily instrumental work that presents marvellous passages (Min Jouwwa, Desert to Desert), punctuated by the vocals of multilingual Lebanese singer ABAJI (Rayehh is sung in French). A musician without borders, ABAJI leads audiences on a journey across the wide open spaces of the Mediterranean blues, a musical form of which he is one of the most ardent practitioners. Origine Orient is a soothing odyssey through rich, far-away lands filled with resonating senses, as well as re-envisioned folklores. ABAJI was born in Lebanon to an Armenian-Greek father from Smyrna and an Armenian-Syrian mother born in Istanbul, who met each other in Lebanon, a country that attracts a whole host of exiles. He arrived in France in 1976 and developed a passion for Chinese traditional medicine and martial arts: Tai Chi Chuan and Do-in. As a therapist, he practiced Tai Chi in a psychiatric setting for seven years. ABAJI began playing guitar at the age of 11, followed by other instruments: the oud, bouzouki, clarinet, percussion, and a series of flutes that he encountered during his travels. He has travelled far and wide, playing on five different continents with indigenous people such as the Zulus in Durban, South Africa, the North Mexican First Nations, Gnawas in Morocco, the Quawwals in Lahore, Pakistan and now, for the first time, he will play in Hong Kong.

From the jazz of his childhood through the post-punk played in todays clubs, Sydney Valette specializes in sound arrangement and derangement, shaking up classical structures and radically altering the electronic scene. His poetic, child-like and destructive approach returns pop music to the informality of its early days. His album Plutt mourir que crever (Better to Die than to Snuff It) is influenced by movements such as cold wave, no wave, techno, witch-house, trance, punk, hip-hop, Orthodox liturgical music and Latin dancing music. Valette interprets his daily feeling of ill-being in a toneless voice over a background of electro-synth. The particular point of distinction in his work is his lyrical content, which often tells stories from a childs perspective, vocalised over well-grounded music. Valette had a small-town upbringing. When he was 18 he moved to Paris where, pushed by internal questioning, he studied philosophy. When he discovered the glittery universe of clubs, he devoted his nights to their rhythms and his days to playing minor key classical piano. He began to produce electronic music on his own. His first album, Plutt mourir que crever, established his artistic image in the contemporary music landscape and was declared Album of the Year by renowned French magazine Technikart. Chromophase VJ is a digital artist from Paris. After a while giving live performances in France with the electro-Jazz band Wipping Willow, he is now based in Shanghai mixing his own art and videos resulting in an amazing experimental show.

Gran Kino, or 4 artists who are as musicians as they are globe-trotters. Rock, electro, hip-hop, traditional music: Gran Kino has decided not to limit its musical identity to a particular kind. According to their encounters, they let the different influences, rhythms, melodies and songs combine and merge in order to create their own DNA. Sara, Charlie, Morgan and Robin have got together around an original project about the year 1989. A dense and intense year, simultaneously fantastic and tragic, where each one can recall an emotion, a sensation, a hope. Gran Kino decided to revive the year 1989, by recalling a hotchpotch of planetary jolts and heartbeats from a whole generation. Accompanied, with the help of samples and images, by artists from all over the world, thus creating a show with which the audience will travel in the universe of 1989 and through the entire world.

After more than 1200 shows around the world in 25 years, Les Tambours du Bronx finally comes crashing into Hong Kong for a night of powerfully persuasive percussion. Witness the spectacle of raw masculine power as it beats myriad rhythms on metal barrels, drumming up a cacophony of sounds that excite, exhilarate and leave you wanting more! About the show Les Tambours du Bronx is an undeniable force. A collective of 17 exquisitely fit men that ignite audiences with their powerful physiques and electrifying energy, they quicken the heart with a collection of extraordinary rhythms created by bashing and banging objects such as huge metal oil barrels, cymbals and wooden sticks. Pulsating rock beats, indus, techno and afrobeat are accompanied by synthesized sounds and samples as well as tribal-like chants and shouts to create an overall effect that connects with audiences on a deep, primal level. Exhilarating choreography and the way the drummers interact, at times in a challenging, confrontational manner adds further to the hypnotic feast. The thundering percussion and explosive power of Les Tambours du Bronx fires-up the audience, inspiring them to stand up and take part in what can be described as Tambour extraordinaire and a show that is not to be missed. About the company Born in 1987 in a small industrial town in Burgundy, Les Tambours du Bronx were unleashed in 1989 by French graphic designer Jean-Paul Goude on the Bicentenary of the French Revolution. Since leaving their native Bronx, they have recorded with renowned orchestras and played with rock icons Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame and Brazilian metal band Sepultura. Les Tambours du Bronx travel the world spreading their thunderous energy and have performed in unique places, such as under the Eiffel Tower, in the Sahara desert and a swimmingpool, and in churches and medieval fortresses.

LoJo presents a world music fusion that has traversed five continents over thirty years. Their last album Cinema El Mundo fuses the musical encounters that have fed this long voyage The band makes music unlike any already in existence, freely crossing stylistic boundaries. Its kaleidoscopic sound brings together French chanson, elements of Jazz and sophisticated pop, reggae and dub, circus and cabaret music, klezmer and East European Roma tunes, West African and Maghrebian traditions. And Peans rough-edged, Tom Waitslike voice contrasts beautifully with those of sisters Yamina and Nadia el Mourid. Cinema El Mundo presents itself as the soundtrack to a seavoyage that celebrates a multicultural community. LoJo was founded in 1982 by young poet Denis Pan and violin-playing friend, Richard Bourreau. By the end of the 1980s, they were playing throughout Europe and had appeared in New York as part of an artists collective. LoJo have never been a band that fit neatly into music industry norms, preferring instead to concentrate their creative and organizational energies on eccentric and challenging events such as The Festival in the Desert, a gathering of Touareg, African and International musicians which takes place annually in the southern Sahara desert. After releasing 10 albums and touring 5 continents, LoJo are considered one of the best live bands in the world. Chochukmo is a 5-piece indie rock band based in Hong Kong. Founded in the summer of 2005, theyve had a few member changes, with the current line-up formed in the spring of 2008. With a chemistry triggered by different musical interests and thoughts, Chochukmo is renowned for their unique style. The band was the winner of the Alliance Franaise de Hong Kong 2012 Artists Grants for their project, A Tragedy, Your Majesty.

Encountering the other is always a source of inspiration for Mourad Merzouki and Kfig Dance Company. Whether with a classical music quartet for an on-stage collaboration or with South African or Brazilian performers for a creation, choreographer Mourad Merzouki explores new horizons by blending hip hop with other influences. About the project This collaborative project with the Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center was born during Mourad Merzoukis first trip to Taiwan with Kfig Dance Company. Captivated by the energy of the local dancers, Merzouki decided to explore this culture that is both imbued with ancestral traditions and rooted in extreme modernity. Without abandoning his hip hop vocabulary, the choreographer blended his approach with a more contemporary dance style that opened up new horizons. Working for the first time with the young Taiwanese designer Johan Ku, Merzouki also experienced new constraints, such as costumes made from wool that limit the dancers gestures, which pushed him to find the rhythm elsewhere, and in doing so, discover a new relation with movement and space.
About the choreographer As a major figure on the hip hop scene since the early 1990s, choreographer Mourad Merzouki works at the junction of many different disciplines, adding circus, martial arts, fine arts and live music to his exploration of all hip hop styles. In 1989 he created his first company Accrorap and brought street dance to the stage. In order to develop his own artistic style and sensitivity, he established his own company, Kfig, in 1996. In June 2009, Merzouki was appointed director of the Centre Chorgraphique National de Crteil et du Val-de-Marne.

Originally created for the Avignon Festival in 1982, Daphnis Chlos choreography moved people with its ability to combine the cerebral and the animal with humour and the joy of the senses. 20 years later, Jean-Claude Gallotta is keen to sustain the repertory of the National Choreographic Centre in Grenoble by choosing to direct three new young dancers and giving new life to this intimate, sensual, wild and mischievous piece. About Daphnis Chlo The characters of Daphnis Chlo, whose ancient origins are born from a Greek tale attributed to Longus, are best known through the music Maurice Ravel wrote for the Russian Ballet in 1912, in which Nijinsky triumphed in the title role. When Jean-Claude Gallotta presented this pas de trois in 1982, just a few months after his ballet Ulysse, he was less concerned with the story (Chlo, the wife of the young shepherd Daphnis, who is kidnapped by pirates and brought back to him by a miracle performed by the God Pan) and more with working on movement and capturing the energy, gentleness and violence in the battle of love. About the choreographer Director of the National Choreographic Centre in Grenoble since the beginning of the 1980s, Jean-Claude Gallotta is considered one of the most important figures of the new French dance movement and has contributed greatly to its recent popularity as well as to its recognition. Gallotta began dance at 22 years old. He studied in New York under Merce Cunningham and founded his own company in 1979. With his assistant and partner Mathilde Altaraz, he created his greatest choreographic works: Ulysse (the cornerstone of modern French dance which became part of the repertoire of the Ballet de lOpra de Paris), Daphnis Chlo and Trois gnrations. Gallottas style is distinguished by his penchant for the pure, clean lines in the overall movements within which the parts of the individual dancers are frequently composed of waving, swaying movements and small steps. How people relate to each other is often at the heart of his creations, and he sprinkles this with a touch of humour.

Asian Premiere! Urban Distortions is an interdisciplinary installation-performance through which dance, live music and territory meet, triggering the publics mobility through a spirit of proximity and intimacy. It combines dance, live music and architecture in an attempt to decode and portray three cities chosen at random by the companys two artistic directors Emmanuelle Vincent and Pierre Larauza: Hong Kong, Mtwapa (Kenya) and Brussels. Three different levels, three superimposed moments, three bodies meeting between animalism and urbanity: This kaleidoscopic fusion explores the potential distortions and contamination in these living spaces, where speed, movement and ladders intersect, and musicians, actors, and dancers perform inside massive inflatable bubbles. Our aim is to upset the traditional representative system to overthrow the codes. Our narrative is composed of collages and deformations, with a particular interest in disintegration, discontinuity and fragmentation, offering a new form of contemporary fable to the spectator. Pierre Larauza & Emmanuelle Vincent For this Asian premiere, the dance company will spend a weeks residency at the Hong Kong Arts Centre to present the very best of their show. A preview will also be performed on a smaller scale at the Harbour City, TST so as to give Hongkongers a glimpse of European contemporary dance. Both versions will be performed in a special collaboration with Hong Kong-based artist Ivy Tsui Yik Chit. t.r.a.n.s.i.t.s.c.a.p.e is a dance company that formed in 2003 from an encounter between architect/visual artist Pierre Larauza and dancer/ choreographer Emmanuelle Vincent, who wished to confront and cross their disciplines with the use of visual and audio arts. Based in Brussels since 2004, the pair has collaborated with international videographers, computer specialists, graphic designers, sound engineers, composers, musicians, actors and dancers.

Boxe Boxe is a beautiful and poetic urban dance performance where a mix of daring innovation and sport will draw us into a world of boxing expressed by a merge of street moves and martial arts. Much more than kicks and punches, expect a seductive atmosphere including strong visual influences of early 20th century silent movies, flowing shinny fabrics and glowing boxing gloves. But rather than the brutality and violence we get from a combat, what we get is an explosion of sheer pleasure and stunning live music by a string quartet with interpretations of works by Mendelssohn, Schubert or Phillip Glass, together with the urban rawness of hip-hop sounds. Boxe Boxe has been conceived by French choreographer Mourad Merzouki a major figure on the international hiphop scene since the early 1990s when he founded dance company Kfig. Merzouki, who visited Macao back in 2007 with the hit Terrain Vague, explores different styles adding diverse disciplines such as circus, martial arts, fine arts and live music to original productions, opening new horizons to the companys presentations. Defined by a cleverly orchestrated lighting, the ring has been replaced with a masterly built setting in an intense performance, which brings together the excitement of combat with artistic power. Rather than confrontation but equally impressive, on stage we will exhilarate with a cast of dynamic dancers which with subtle humour and intense physicality transform the image of a violent sport into a moment to be enjoyed by families and contemporary dance lovers.

In France the 1920s are called the crazy years. It was then, during the merriment of post-World War I, that the French, and in particular, Parisians, adopted the phrase Carpe Diem (seize the day). The 1920s represent the true expression of freedom, liberalization, creation and the cultural cornucopia of France; women cut their hair, and their skirts, jazz was de rigueur, cultural circles boomed and modernity was on the rise.
To pay tribute to one of the most exciting and creative times in France, this years cinema programme comprises two halves: One showcases masterpieces from the 1920s. Some of these are shown as they were meant to be seen at that time (accompanied by live music), others have been restored to their former shine by the latest in state-of-the-art technology, a few are testimony to the art of excellent preservation, which has kept these rare pieces filmed between the wars in a condition that still allows viewing some 80 years later, and many have never been shown in Hong Kong, such as those directed by Rene Clair, Luis Bunuel and Cocteau.

A Cine-Concert combines the silent film with musicians that play (the soundtrack) live in front of the audience. The Film : A Ladies Delight Duviviers final silent film is a modern retelling of Zolas panoramic chronicle of 19th century Parisian society, which centres on a small fabric shop struggling to survive in the shadow of a luxury department store. With expressionistic shades of E. von Stroheim and G. W. Pabst, Au Bonheur des Dames captures the rhythms of urban life and the pleasures of bourgeois consumer culture, with its obsession for fashion and imagewhile creating a stinging portrait of capitalist ruthlessness and class tensions. One of the last silent movies made in France, Au Bonheur des Dames features exceptional technical innovation, which has been enhanced by a state-of-the-art process that has restored it with its original shine.
An orgy of pure cinema, from its opening train shot to its climactic visual effect of a magically converted storefront. Filming in and around the Galeries Lafayette, Duvivier elaborates massive crowd scenes; surreal, constructivist montagesfor this alternately sincere and cynical hymn to capitalist endeavour. (Scott Foundas, Village Voice)
The Director : Julien Duvivier Born in France in 1896, Duvivier was a stage actor and then the production assistant on Andr Antoines films before starting a career as a director in 1919. After twenty silent movies, he attained international recognition in the 1930s with movies that have become classic tales of poetic realism. The Octuor de France Formed in 1979 by clarinet player Jean-Louis Sajot, the Octuor de France is currently the only permanent French ensemble of its kind. It participates in the renewal of silent movies by presenting projectionsconcerts, with specifically written music. The scores are played live in total synchronization with silent cinema masterpieces. The Octuor de France has played at the Cannes International Film Festival and in major film festivals around the globe.

A Cine-Concert combines the silent film with musicians that play (the soundtrack) live in front of the audience. The Film: The Phantom of the Opera The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title. Directed by Rupert Julian it stars Lon Chaney in the lead role as a deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. The movie remains most famous for Lon Chaneys intentionally horrific, self-applied makeup, which was kept a studio secret until the films premiere. The Director : Rupert Julian Rupert Julian (1879 1943) was the first New Zealand cinema actor, director, writer and producer. He performed on stage and in film both in his native country and Australia before emigrating to the United States in 1912, where he started his career as an actor in New York before working in silent movies. He turned to directing in 1915 but soon fell into a professional decline after the advent of sound. Shown for the first time, this exhibition comprises a unique collection of Empire-style furniture and decorative arts that are symbolic of the legendary Napoleon I and early 19th century Europe. About the exhibition Exceptionally co-organized by the Mobilier national which preserves national French collections and the Macao Museum of Art, this major exhibition presents a selection of 125 of the finest masterpieces that adorned the Napoleonic palaces during the First French Empire (18041815). It presents some of the most important Empire-style items that have never been shown outside of France and which are full of symbol and power related to the glory of the Emperor. Furniture, tapestries, candelabras, chandeliers, and pendulum clocks, amongst other treasures, such as the Imperial throne, which has been lovingly preserved in the French Senate in France, are revealed to the public for the first time. The variety of objects illustrate how Napoleon imposed his aesthetic sensibilities upon every aspect of life during this period and how the Empire-style has become one of the grandest and most opulent in the history of Fine and Decorative Arts. About Napoleon I Through his military exploits and ruthless efficiency, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) rose from obscurity to become Napoleon I, Empereur des Franais (Emperor of France) in 1804. Having gained his position through his political and military achievements throughout Europe, Napoleon used artists, designers and architects to promote and legitimize his regime, which appropriated emblems of power from the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures.

This major exhibition rediscovers the multi-talented French artist of the swinging twenties, whose inventive poetry and graphic lines widely inspired his contemporaries Picasso, Matisse, Chirico, Warhol and Modigliani, among others. About the exhibition This major exhibition presents some 230 works by the graphic poet Jean Cocteau as well as masterpieces created by artists he considered as friends and associates. Inspired by Cocteaus sense of poetry and design, these include Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Leon Bakst, Bernard Buffet, Leonard Foujita, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Andy Warhol. The exhibition is composed of iconic pieces from the important private collection owned by Ioannis Kontaxopoulos and Alexander Prokopchuk as well as exceptional loans from the National Museum of Monaco, Jean Cocteaus house in Milly-la-fort and the Maison Cartier. Centred on the themes that haunted Cocteau throughout his life, namely self-portraits, mythology, religion, eroticism, circus, Russian ballet, bullfighting and flamenco, the exhibition showcases illustrated books, drawings, oil paintings, prints, painted pebbles, jewellery, costume and set design and other poetic objects to demonstrate the eclectic panorama of his collaborations and masterpieces. About Jean Cocteau 2013 celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jean Cocteaus death (18891963). A poet wrapped inside a painter, wrapped inside a filmmaker and actor, he was an artist of incredibly varied media who actively produced poetry, stage design and plays for ballet, as well as films, ceramics, novels and sculpture throughout his life. Despite the breadth of his output, he distinctly referred to himself as an author, saying that all of his work was poetry. Fascinated by transparency, contemporary artist Ccile Bart has created a unique, tailor-made installation of monochromes that liberate the canvas from the traditional front-on-view allowing spectators to move around a multicoloured environment. About the exhibition Shown for the first time in Asia, this tailor-made exhibition launches Ccile Barts new experiences in her artistic practice. Hosted at Landmark Atrium, this monumental installation features sequential paintings that challenge perspectives in terms of depth, surface and the modulation of light and movement within a space elements that the artist brings together with great precision. Bart dispenses with the conventional straight-on view by hanging her paintings/screens freely from the ceiling. They are strung with thin metal cables to give the impression that they are floating or levitating, forming sensitive, diaphanous surfaces that the eye encounters and looks right through. When walking under the installation visitors encounter new compositions and different positions from which the paintings/screens appear to have stopped in mid-flight or mid-fall. About Ccile Bart Since the late 1980s, Ccile Bart (born 1958 in Dijon, France) has been producing a singular work that depicts the painting, applied on transparent canvas (paintings/screens) and its modulation by light. As well as the large installations that helped elevate her recognition in the 1990s (the ARC at the Museum of Modern Art of Paris, The Consortium in Dijon, The Villa Arson in Nice, the MAMCO in Geneva, etc.), Ccile Bart revitalized her exhibitions by collaborating with two or three other artists, such as the painter Felice Varini, and sculptors Michel Verjux, Franois Morellet and Peter Downsbrough, among others.

Discover the playful, poetic sculptures of French-Argentinean artist and designer Pablo Reinoso. On display in Macau for the first time, this exhibition showcases Reinosos creative world where nature runs wild and imagination is set free. About the exhibition Originally a renowned designer but essentially an artist, Pablo Reinoso has practiced art in various ways since an early age. Multifaceted and curious, he navigates through different disciplines; sculpture, photography, architecture and design, exploring a myriad of techniques and materials. With his sculptural creations, he tests the limits of possibility by using objects against their grain, uniting opposites and mixing-up materials such as wood, slate, brass, marble and steel. Having previously lent their impressive exhibition spaces to artists during Le French May, One Central Macau and the Mandarin Oriental, Macau generously host Living Sculptures, an exhibition brought by Art Plural Gallery, Singapore. The exhibition presents 11 unique sculptures that redefine everyday objects such as benches, chairs, ladders and spades, among others. In Reinosos work, the actual study of functionality leads to an inner dialogue between art and design, creating a new artistic language. About the artist Born in Argentina in 1955, Pablo Reinoso studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires. He has been living and working in Paris since 1979, establishing a successful career as an artist, communication consultant and production designer, working on furniture, lighting, jewellery and packaging for luxury goods. In addition to his commercial career, he is a sculptor who often uses elements of furniture. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions including MALBA - Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (Buenos Aires), MAM Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (Brazil), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid), the Museum of Art and Design (New York) and the Art Plural Gallery (Singapore), to name a few.

Scan the architectural landscapes of renowned photojournalist Ren Burri, whose portfolio of images are considered one of the greatest collections of 20th century iconography. About the exhibition
Inauguration of the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Haut, built by Le Corbusier, Ronchamp, France. 1955. Ren Burri / Magnum Photos
The University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong is honoured to feature this major exhibition, which brings together Ren Burris most significant architectural photographs, famous buildings and portraits of architects, demonstrating his keen interest in architecture within social and cultural contexts. Burris work is often referred to as constructive photography. Creating, drawing on life and portraying utopias including their potential defects have always offered him greater inspiration than destruction and chaos. Burri is a photographer of vision, an artist who tests out the revolutionary implications of the imagination. This explains his early interest in China, an ancient civilisation which, in the middle of the 20th century, was searching for new concepts to overcome famine, illiteracy and snowballing demographics. Burri witnessed and documented the creation of futuristic city Brasilia, the Brazilian federal capital that plays host to stunning architectural treasures created by Brazilian, modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer. UTOPIA features many of these fascinating images, as well as portraits of Niemeyer and the influential, award-winning architect Le Corbusier. About the photographer Born in 1933, and celebrating his 80th birthday this year, Ren Burri was elected as a member of the prestigious Magnum Photo Agency in 1959, where he met the great photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour. The globe-trotting photojournalist is well known for his photos of major political, historical and cultural events and key figures of the second half of the 20th century.

Between tradition and modernity, from architecture to monuments, landscapes and industrial design, Burgundy boasts an astonishing heritage that you can experience at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. About the exhibition The illustrious heritage of France is not simply reflected by its capital Paris! And this is why, each year, Le French May honours one of the 27 regions of France so as to promote the countrys vast history and culture. Even though the Burgundy region is most famous for its wines, the extreme diversity of its vineyards, which have been shaped by the encounter between humans and nature throughout the centuries, remain little-known. Hosted by the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre located in the verdant grounds of Kowloon Park, Amazing Bourgogne! has been carefully curated to showcase Burgundys stunning landscape and rich, diverse heritage (historical, architectural, religious, natural, ethnological and industrial). An exhibition of exploration, Amazing Bourgogne! has been especially designed to delight the senses. On a visual level there is plenty to admire, from the display of beautifully crafted wine-related objects, some of which date back centuries, and the sea of hanging banners depicting images of Burgundys abundant beauty. Visuals and acoustics are combined and presented together in a dark cube in which you are invited to stroll through Burgundy. And a unique olfactory stimulus is offered in the shape of interactive cellar aromas that allow visitors to gently inhale the variety of bouquets found in the different wines of this magnificent region. A dedicated childrens area also provides an abundance of adventure making Amazing Bourgogne! an emotional, sensory and aesthetical journey for all ages. A lecture programme will be held during the exhibition period.

Swaying to the rhythm of the intensity of light, Dancing Flowers are displayed by the hundreds, arranged in the form of a field that harmoniously decorates this showcase. This is socially conscious art that prompts reflection upon respect for the environment, sustainable development, forms of renewable energy, and more generally, the sustainability of our modes of production and consumption. Each flower is comprised of a motor that is powered by a photovoltaic solar cell. The solar cell transforms light into electricity, which then powers the motor and holds the flower in perpetual movement so long as there is light. Playful and poetic, these solar works deliver a strong message, one that promotes the use of renewable energy in a healthier world. The floral composition is a visual manifestation of solar or artificial lights ability to produce movement. Alexandre Dang has developed a pedagogic aspect to his sustainable art, using it to educate young people about the potential of eco-friendly technologies with a focus on renewable energy. Dangs Dancing Solar Flowers have become his most iconic work. The flowers have toured the world, visiting the USA, China, Singapore, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Lebanon, Morocco, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, and Romania Dang originally comes from a scientific background; he is an Engineer of the cole Polytechnique (Paris) and of the cole Nationale des Pontset Chausses (Paris). Convinced of the need to raise awareness in the potential of environmentally friendly technologies and sustainable development, he incorporated solar energy as the power source of his kinetic art. His work is part of an artistic movement called Solar Art or "Solar Artwork which integrates solar energy into works of art.

Edouard Malingue Gallery is pleased to present the highly anticipated public installation of Pentateuque at Statue Square Gardens. The fantastical sculpture brings to life-size scale one of French Artist Fabien Mrelles drawings, Pentateuque, which features a man balancing an elephant atop his back. This creation, which tends to the humorous and the absurd, will compliment a concurrent exhibition of Mrelles drawings and a sculpture at Edouard Malingue Gallery in Central. Overall, Pentateuque will add an element of other worldliness to the visual landscape of Hong Kong. A graduate from the Beaux-Arts Academy in Paris, Mrelle completed an exchange in XiAn in 2005. In November 2013, his works will be exhibited at Le Muse des Beaux-Arts de La Rochelle and The Centre Pompidou in Paris. Recently, 13 of his drawings by Mrelle were added to the Centre Pompidou collection.

Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin, known as Auguste Rodin, is one of the best known sculptors to have ever lived and his popularity throughout his own lifetime is unusual in the art world. Whilst being acceptable and still pushing the boundaries of modern art, Rodin became known to many as the father of modern sculpture. French interest in Chinoiserie is a history stimulated by the enthusiasm for objects imported from China: the brilliant colours of pagodas, dragons and chimera have long enlivened French interiors, particularly in the courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Chinoiseries Golden Age came as Rococo triumphed in France (1725-1750). Imported objects were transformed by talented designers before becoming objects recreated in France: a distinctive Chinoiserie blending real and imaginary sources. Francois Boucher is considered one of the movements best representatives, who from 1730 developed fascinatingly joyful Chinoiserie inspired by his collection of imported objects. The exhibition retraces the history of the French taste for Chinoiserie, underlining the close bonds between China and France in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Stphane Couturier was born in France and has lived and worked in Paris. In 1994, the artist inaugurated his career by exhibiting his first series of photographs titled Urban Archaeology. Couturier perceives the city as a living organism with multiplicities, in which he deliberately avoids anything that would have suggested poetry, nostalgia or oddity when he is doing photography. In the past year, he has been working for the Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation since 2012, which is a commission work for him to film the construction of the foundations museum designed by Frank Gehry in Paris. The images captured by Couturier on sites of transitions are filled with density, intensity and complexity, all the elements in his works are fully utilized to represent the modernization he observed in reality. Noteworthy, the flatness composed by lines, forms and colors that framed in the photograph imposes a sense of alienation and distance on the viewers. In the current exhibits, you will have a taste of rhythms and tempos that the artist intentionally created, also inasmuch as the possible ways to question, to perceive and to discover the sense of space and the aesthetics in the everyday cityscapes.

What helps you build your impression of a city - authentic delicacies, architecture, or local culture? Have you ever thought of experiencing the rhythm of a city through the artworks painted and composed by comic artists? At the cross-media and cross-cultural comics concert New Inspiration, four Hong Kong and French comic artists Siuhak, Little Thunder, Charles Berberian and Mathilde Domecq will demonstrate the chemistry between comics and music as they draw to melodies in this energy-charged performance. As an extension of this collaboration, Cityscape: Music of the Mind will combine comics with another type of music, presenting the unique cityscape held in the artists mind. When illustrating their impression of the city they live in, some tunes either revived through a recollection of the past, or evoked by an exploration of creative ideas often recur in the artists minds. Walking into a gallery full of comics drawn in synchrony with these silent tunes, the audience find themselves enjoying an exceptional city tour that only a magical union between the visual and "music" can offer. Comic fans, music enthusiasts, aand lovers of Hong Kong and French culture - are you ready to explore the city with us?

Moving under the influence of Japanese pop culture and New Realism, kinetic French artist Vincent Leroy forms poetry with his technology. Movement and repetition redefine natural order and commanded creation. Electric flowers absorb a haunting and fascinating rhythm that reinforces the endless repetition of motifs. Thus this field of mechanical flowers whose petals turn tirelessly on their rolling pins becomes an unlikely ode to the fragility of nature. Born in 1968 into a farming family in Normandy, Vincent Leroy graduated from the Ecole Nationale Suprieure de Cration Industrielle in 1995. In his work as an industrial engineer, he maintains an overall perspective on the manufacturing process selecting shapes, materials, colours and technical properties. Active on the international contemporary art scene, Vincent Leroy is among those artists who refuse to be categorized.

The first solo exhibition of the young French artist Charles Jaulerry will showcase his Mirrors series. Painted in acrylic and enamel, these works show the human figure in its most simple elementary form, travelling back and forth between abstraction and figuration; mysterious yet recognizable. The viewer is beckoned to stand in front of the canvas and contemplate his psychic reflection. Jaulerry is concerned with human natures response to our overwhelmingly complex contemporary world The Scream cries out again.
FEAST projects presents a second exhibition of the works of Xie Lei, who through a group of new paintings is still seeking the unrepresentable in painting. His work is inspired from reality but does not describe or document it. It is an invitation for the spectators to interrogate themselves about the world surrounding them, the ambiguity of situations, the ambivalence of the human comedy, the duality of elements. His painting hides as much as it reveals as in the twilight when every sight is confusing when the ordinary becomes uncanny.

Xavier Veilhan creates exhibitions in the form of wanderings and site specific interventions, in cities, parks or living environments (Veilhan Versailles, Palace of Versailles, 2009; Veilhan at Hatfield: Promenade, 2012; Architectones, 2012-2014). Veilhan is a multidisciplinary artist. He is possessed of a highly personal artistic universe inhabited by a heterodox range of characters, objects and animals. Through complex devices, the playful component emerges as a fundamental element in evoking a reality peopled with symbols, metaphors and other semantic ambiguities. Veilhan turns his gaze on the past to deconstruct classical genres and iconographies: a reinvention of the equestrian portrait, the setting up of a distinctive bestiary based on traditional canons or the transformation of the imaginary of the vanitas into objects akin to a pop aesthetic in an approach that seeks communion with the viewer in an overall experience. For Veilhan, the possibilities of representation and the art of the exhibition are part of his leitmotif, the ultimate live performance where his works function as part of a greater machinery. His solo show Mobiles organized by Galerie Perrotin, Hong Kong from 21 May to 22 June 2013 gathers a group of recent or never seen mobiles of different various shapes and dimensions.

Mur Nomade has invited French painter Rgis Gonzalez and Hong Kong artist Tsang Chui Mei to participate in a collaborative, 2 week artistin-residence project where they will co-create a 20-metre long wall painting. The working method for this collaboration will derive from Exquisite Corpse, a game invented by the Surrealist writers and painters, inspired by the old parlour game Consequences, in which words or images were collectively assembled. Surrealists partook of this game in French cafs during the 1930s, intending to produce creative processes free of conscious control. During the residency the artists will work in an open-studio giving the public a chance to see artists at work and artworks in the making. Curated by Amandine Hervey
The exhibition features a collection of landscape photographs and traditional still life studies by renowned French photographer Dominique Laug. Intimate and sensitive with the resonance of soft colours, sometimes ethereal and always beautifully crafted, Laug's work has a wonderful dreamlike quality. By shooting with only natural light and printing on hand-made paper, which he commissions from a Sicilian manufacturer, and using only the finest Egyptian cotton rags, his photographs have a unique sensitivity. Laug has worked as a professional photographer since 1985. Based in France, he works on editorial projects for various leading European magazines and publishers. His work has been exhibited at photographic galleries in Europe, the US and at Picture This Gallery in Hong Kong.

The Seberger brothers, known as fashion reporters had, from the 1900s (La Belle Epoque) to the interwar period, a genius to capture the creations of renowned fashion designers outside the studio, where fashion was alive and could be seen for real. In Paris, Biarritz, Monte Carlo, Deauville they photographed fashion worn in the world by those for whom it was intended at the time, the upper cosmopolitan society. The exhibition of the Seberger brothers, Jules (1872-1932), Louis (1874-1946) and Henri (1876-1956), represents a selection of the most beautiful and iconic photos that helped to shape how French elegance is perceived today. Commissioned in 1909 by the Magazine La Mode Pratique, they started a series of photographs of elegant women. As a result of their success, they found themselves in huge demand among the most important fashion magazines of the time and soon specialized on fashion spreads. Their family workshop was operational for 70 years. The exhibition presents the history of fashion photography illustrating the radical changes of fashion trends in the first half of the 20th Century as well as an entertaining and nostalgic chronicle of the world of upper society during this period. The photographs of the Seberger brothers reported stories from real life. Beyond the fashion itself, they managed to capture the effervescence of upper class society and photograph the world of anonymous beauties such as bankers, designers, aristocrats and celebrities including Mistinguett, Josphine Baker, Gabrielle Chanel, Arletty, the Dolly Sisters, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, the Rothschild, the Citron family On the top of being a tribute to the Seberger brothers work, this exhibition pays homage to fashion and elegance. This exhibition, Photographers of Elegance, is by curated by Dominique Versavel, curator at the Department of Prints and Photographs at the Bibliothque nationale de France. This selection derives from the same intitled exhibition curated in 2006 by Sylvie Aubenas, Director of the Department of Prints and Photographs at the Bibliothque nationale de France and the Historian Xavier Demange.

By providing dedicated menus to match with French wines, wine tastings, promotions and workshops, Hong Kong and Macau restaurants, Michelin-starred chefs, as well as wine importers and distributors will dedicate the entire month of May to celebrate this festival. Each year, Le French GourMay honors the wine from a different region of France, and in 2013, Bourgogne will be the focus. Bourgogne wines, whether they are red or white, are distinguishable by the extraordinary delicacy and elegance of their aromas, focusing on the subtlety rather than their powerfulness. The remarkable balance, freshness and excellent body of Bourgogne wines make them pleasant wines that are a joy to share. The official partner of Le French GourMay in 2013: Bourgogne Bourgogne has nearly 28,500 hectares of vines in production, 100 classified Appellation dOrigine Contrle (A.O.C) and a volume of about 200 million bottles marketed. In Bourgogne, terroir is a broad concept which includes both natural and human factors. It was wine growers, sometimes aided by the work of monks, who discovered, identified and then developed the Terroirs. Centuries of hard work were necessary for this concept, whose origin goes back to the early Middle Ages, to be passed down to us and be officially recognized and described in the middle of the last century with the creation of the I.N.A.O. and appellations of origin. The promotional activities of Le French GourMay 2013 in several different ways Throughout Le French GourMay, Michelin-starred restaurants such as Amber, Caprice, Petrus, Pierre, lAtelier de Jol Robuchon, Spoon and Tate will join the festival to create gastronomic feasts with the theme of Bourgogne. To further complement this unique culinary experience, the menus are specifically paired with Bourgogne wines.
