Removing the Base Cover

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery). Loosen the captive screw that secures the base cover to the computer base. Pry the base cover with your fingers and ensure that the base cover is released from the tabs on the computer base. Lift the base cover off the computer base.

Replacing the Base Cover

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Slide the two tabs on the base cover into the slots on the computer base. Snap the base cover into place. Tighten the captive screw that secures the base cover to the computer base. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).

Recommended Tools Turning Off Your Computer Before Working Inside Your Computer This manual provides instructions for removing and installing components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist:

You have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer. You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer. A component can be replaced orif purchased separatelyinstalled by performing the removal procedure in the reverse order.

Turning Off Your Computer

CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.

Save and close all open files and exit all open programs. Shut down the operating system: Microsoft Windows Vista: Click Start Windows 7 : Click Start and then click Shut Down. , click the arrow , and then click Shut Down.

Ensure that the computer is turned off. If your computer did not automatically turn off when you shut down the operating system, press and hold the power button until the computer turns off.

Before Working Inside Your Computer

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety. CAUTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on your computer). CAUTION: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins. CAUTION: Onlyacertifiedservicetechnicianshouldperformrepairsonyourcomputer.DamageduetoservicingthatisnotauthorizedbyDell is not covered by your warranty. CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.

 CAUTION: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.

Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer) and all attached devices.

CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.

3.

Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer. Press and eject any installed cards from the 7-in-1 Media Card Reader. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. Disconnect all attached devices from your computer.

CAUTION: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Removing the Battery) before working inside the computer. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery). Turn the computer top-side up, open the display, and press the power button to ground the system board.

Flashing the BIOS

Turn on the computer. Go to support.dell.com/support/downloads. Locate the BIOS update file for your computer: NOTE: The Service Tag for your computer is located on a label at the bottom of the computer.

If you have your computer's Service Tag: a. b. Click Enter a Service Tag. Enter your computer's Service Tag in the Enter a service tag: field, click Go, and proceed to step 4.

If you do not have your computer's Service Tag: a. b. c. Select the type of product in the Select Your Product Family list. Select the product brand in the Select Your Product Line list. Select the product model number in the Select Your Product Model list. NOTE: If you have selected a different model and want to start over again, click Start Over on the top right of the menu.

d.

Click Confirm.

A list of results appear on the screen. Click BIOS. Click Download Now to download the latest BIOS file. The File Download window appears. Click Save to save the file on your desktop. The file downloads to your desktop. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears. The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Hold the coin-cell battery with the positive side facing up. Slide the coin-cell battery into the slot and gently press until it snaps into place. Removing the Processor Module

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery). Follow the instructions from step 3 to step 14 in Removing the System Board. Remove the processor heat sink (see Removing the Processor Heat Sink).

CAUTION: To prevent intermittent contact between the ZIF-socket cam screw and the processor when removing or replacing the processor, press to apply slight pressure to the center of the processor while turning the cam screw. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.

To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.

CAUTION: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor thermal-cooling assembly. The oils in your skin can reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads. CAUTION: When removing the processor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor module.

Lift the processor module from the ZIF socket.

Replacing the Processor Module

NOTE: If a new processor is installed, you will receive a new thermal-cooling assembly, which will include an affixed thermal pad, or you will receive a new thermal pad along with documentation to illustrate proper installation. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor module with the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket, then insert the processor module. NOTE: The pin-1 corner of the processor module has a triangle that aligns with the triangle on the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket.

When the processor module is properly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the others, the module is not seated properly. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor module, hold the screwdriver perpendicular to the processor module when turning the cam screw.

Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor module to the system board. Replace the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink). Follow the instructions from step 5 to step 17 in Replacing the System Board. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).

Removing the Processor Heat Sink

In sequential order (indicated on the processor heat sink), loosen the four captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board. NOTE: The appearance and number of screws on the processor heat sink may vary based on the your computer model.

Replacing the Processor Heat Sink

NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have already removed the processor heat sink and are ready to replace it.

Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

Place the processor heat sink on the system board. Align the four captive screws on the processor heat sink with the screw holes on the system board and tighten the screws in sequential order (indicated on the processor heat sink). NOTE: The appearance and number of screws on the processor heat sink may vary based on the your computer model.

Connect the fan cable to the connector on the system board. Follow the instructions from step 5 to step 17 in Replacing the System Board. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).

Replacing the Display Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Place the display assembly in position and replace the four screws (two on each side) that secure the display assembly to the computer base. Route the display cable into the routing guide and connect the cable to the connector on the system board. Connect the Mini-Card antenna cables to the connectors on the Mini- Card. Turn the computer over and replace the two screws at the bottom of the computer. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the optical drive (see Replacing the Optical Drive). Replace memory module(s) (see Replacing the Memory Module(s)). Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover). CAUTION: The display bezel is extremely fragile. Be careful when removing it to prevent damaging the bezel.

Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Using your fingertips, carefully pry up the inside edge of the display bezel. Remove the display bezel.

Turn the display panel over and place it on a clean surface. Lift the tape that secures the display cable to the display board connector and disconnect the display cable. Peel off the camera cable from the back of the display panel.

Remove the four screws (two on each side) that secure the display panel brackets to the display panel.

Replacing the Display Panel

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Replace the four screws (two on each side) that secure the display panel brackets to the display panel. Connect the display cable to the display board connector and secure it with the tape. Adhere the camera cable to the back of the display panel with the tape. Place the display panel on the display cover and connect the camera cable to the connector on the camera module. Align the screw holes on the display panel with the screw holes on the display cover.

Removing the Hard Drive

CAUTION: When the hard drive is not in the computer, store it in protective antistatic packaging (see "Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge" in the safety instructions that shipped with your computer). Remove the four screws that secure the hard-drive assembly.

Turn the computer over and lift the hard-drive assembly out of the hard-drive bay to disconnect the hard-drive assembly from the connector on the system board.

Replacing the Hard Drive

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the new drive from its packaging. Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive. Connect the interposer to the hard drive. Align the hard-drive assembly with the connector on the system board and press the hard-drive assembly into the hard-drive bay until it is fully seated. Turn the computer over and replace the four screws that secure the hard-drive assembly. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Removing the Keyboard

Turn the computer over and open the display as far as possible.

CAUTION: The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the keyboard. Press the keyboard and slide it towards the bottom as far as possible. Slide a plastic scribe between the keyboard and palm rest, and pry and lift the keyboard to disengage it from the tabs on the palm rest.

Ease the keyboard up and slide the six tabs at the bottom of the keyboard out of the slots on the palm rest. Without pulling hard on the keyboard, turn it over. Lift the connector latch and pull the pull-tab to disconnect the keyboard cable from the connector on the system board. Lift the keyboard off the computer.

Replacing the Keyboard

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Slide the keyboard cable into the connector on the system board and press down on the connector latch to secure the cable. Slide the six tabs at the bottom of the keyboard into the slots on the palm rest. Gently press around the edges of the keyboard to secure the keyboard under the tabs on the palm rest and slide the keyboard upwards. Replace the screw that secures the keyboard to the computer base. NOTE: The screw that secures the keyboard to the computer base may not be present in all computers.

Removing the Memory Module(s)

Replacing the Memory Module(s)

CAUTION: If you need to install memory modules in two connectors, install a memory module in the connector labeled "DIMM A" before you install a memory module in the connector labeled "DIMM B." Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

Slide the memory module firmly into the connector at a 45-degree angle, and press the memory module down until it clicks into place. If you do not hear the click, remove the memory module and reinstall it. NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot.

CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned. Disconnect the antenna cables from the Mini-Card.

Replacing the Mini-Card

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the new Mini-Card from its packaging.

CAUTION: Use firm and even pressure to slide the card into place. If you use excessive force, you may damage the connector. CAUTION: The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, check the connectors on the card and on the system board, and realign the card. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the Mini-Card, never place cables under the card.

Insert the Mini-Card connector at a 45-degree angle into the connector on the system board. Press the other end of the Mini-Card down into the slot on the system board and replace the screw that secures the Mini-Card to the connector on the system board. Connect the appropriate antenna cables to the Mini-Card you are installing. The following table provides the antenna cable color scheme for the MiniCard supported by your computer.

Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). Follow the instructions in step 8 and step 9 in Removing the Hard Drive. Remove the Mini-Card (see Removing the Mini-Card). Remove the Bluetooth module (see Removing the Bluetooth Module). Disconnect the display cable, VGA connector board cable, speaker cable, and Media Card Reader board cable from the connectors on the system board. Remove the two screws that secure the system board assembly to the computer base.

Lift the system board assembly to disconnect connector on the system board from the connector on the I/O board and lift the system board assembly off the computer base. Turn the system board assembly over. Remove the coin-cell battery (see Removing the Coin-Cell Battery). Remove the processor heat sink (see Removing the Processor Heat Sink). Remove the processor module (see Removing the Processor Module).

Replacing the System Board

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Replace the processor module (see Replacing the Processor Module). Replace the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink). Replace the coin-cell battery (see Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery). Turn the system board assembly over. Align the connectors on the system board with the slots on the computer base. Gently press the system board to connect the connector on the system board to the connector on the I/O board. Replace the two screws that secure the system board assembly to the computer base. Connect the display cable, VGA connector board cable, speaker cable, and Media Card Reader board cable to the connectors on the system board. Replace the Bluetooth module (see Replacing the Bluetooth Module). Replace the Mini-Card (see Replacing the Mini-Card). Follow the instructions in step 4 and step 5 in Replacing the Hard Drive. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the optical drive (see Replacing the Optical Drive). CAUTION: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside the computer. Failure to do so may result in damage to the computer. Turn on the computer. NOTE: After you have replaced the system board, enter the computer Service Tag in the BIOS of the replacement system board.

Entering the Service Tag in the BIOS

Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly. Turn on the computer. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program. Navigate to the security tab and enter the service tag in the Set Service Tag field.

Removing the VGA Connector Board Replacing the VGA Connector Board WARNING: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. Removing the VGA Connector Board

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery). Remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover). Remove memory module(s) (see Removing the Memory Module(s)). Remove the optical drive (see Removing the Optical Drive). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the middle cover (see Removing the Middle Cover). Disconnect the VGA connector board cable from the connector on the system board and remove it from the routing guide. Remove the VGA connector board from the tab on the computer base. Lift the VGA connector board along with the cable off the computer base.

Replacing the VGA Connector Board

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Place the VGA connector board along with the cable on the computer base and press the VGA connector board until it is seated fully. Route the VGA connector board cable into the routing guide and connect the cable to the connector on the system board. Replace the middle cover (see Replacing the Middle Cover). Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly). Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the optical drive (see Replacing the Optical Drive). Replace memory module(s) (see Replacing the Memory Module(s)). Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
