The Battle of Dien Bien Phu. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1963. 2. Evaluation: The book The Battle of Dien Bien Phu is a good source of information for the following reasons. a. The author, Jules Roy, was born in Rovigo, Algeria in 1907 and educated at a seminary in his country. He attended a military school at Saint-Maixent. He entered the Army in 1927 and then the Royal Air Force in 1940. He flew 37 missions over Germany in 1944, where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He left the service in 1953 as a Colonel after a tour in Indochina, where he found himself struggling to defend what he was doing. It was then that he began to write. Ever since then he has dedicated his life to literature. Roy is the author of several plays and novels, and he wrote several articles about the French militarys behavior during the war. His articles sparked great disapproval from many critics. Roys indictment of the French atrocities in Algeria caused many military authorities to obstruct his research into the battle of Dien Bien Phu. b. Roy does an excellent job of telling the story of the battle of Dien Bien Phu. His narrative is at times cynical of the French and their poor decisions. Roy also makes note of the United States leadership and the politics that played such an overwhelming role in their entry into the war. Many say Roys great merits are his objectivity, impartiality, and great anger. The book includes a Dramatic Personae of all of the major players in the battle. This is an excellent summary of each figure in the battle. c. In a chronological order of events, Roy describes in good detail the battle as it took place. Roy describes the events that occurred, as well as asking many questions to the reader about the decisions that were made. Many of these questions spark great debate. Such as: After all, wasnt this war rather like Atlantis? Roys tone throughout the book seems to be one of cynicism. Roy is very critical about the entrance of the United States into Southeast Asia, and of their complete disregard for the lessons learned by the French. d. Roy conducted quality research on the battle prior to writing this book. His research included spending several months in North and South Vietnam where he conducted personal interviews with all principle players to include Vietminh commander General Giap in 1963. The bibliography includes many sources of French books on the subject to include: Gadea, Jos, La Lgion en avant, Paris, Le Scorpion, 1961, and a book by the current President of France; Mitterand, Francois, Aux frontires de lUnion francaise. Indochine, Tunisie, Prface de Pierre Mends-France, Paris, Julliard, 1954. The bibliography also includes a list of numerous articles written on the subject from various sources. e. Jules Roy wrote his book not long after the end of the battle at Dien Bien Phu. Therefore his information was very current and a timely source of reflection on what the French had done during the battle. His book was a best seller in France with more than 200,000 copies in print. Over time it has proven a valid warning to the United States that many dismissed. This book will remain a good study for the future in the many lessons that can be learned from others actions in war. This book will no doubt remain a classic on the subject of warfare.
