X.25 NETWORKS
Packet-switching networks give you some of the best of both leased and dialup lines. X.25 service is a proven technology thats been the standard for years in Modem many applications. PAD

What is X.25?
X
.25 is an access standard developed by the CCITT. Thats all. It doesnt specify what kind of equipment you have to use, or what kind of network will carry the data. It just describes how data moves from sender to receiver. The standard has been around for years, and a lot of applications depend on it. But why is it so popular? What can you do with it? Handle calls from several different devices at once over a single link. Pay for only the data you send, not for idle time. Instead of charging by the minute, X.25 services charge by the packet. If your line is open but inactive, the meters not running. Set up a virtual network. If you dont have the traffic to justify a whole wide-area network on your own, Switched-X.25 service can be almost as convenientand much less expensive.

How do X.25 services work?

T
o use X.25 services, youll need a DTE devicea PAD (Packet Assembler/Disassembler)at each end of your link to format network user data into X.25 packets for transmission across the network. Each interface connecting to the X.25 network has a unique address. Once the router determines the destination address of your data, the two DTEs establish a virtual circuit. When the virtual circuit is established, the DTE can transmit and receive data. X.25 uses LCNs (logical channel numbers) to identify DTE connections. The LCNs make it possible to send a packet into a packetswitched network at one end (with no control over the packets journey) and then to pick out the packet at the receiving end. The X.25 standard doesnt specify how a packet travels through a network. It applies only to packets before they enter the WAN and after they emerge from the WAN.

X.25 is versatile
F
orget protocol problems. The X.25 standard doesnt care about protocols or operating systems. Its easy to link, say, PCs to a mainframe. That makes X.25 especially good for bulletin-board or database services.

What about Frame Relay?

F
rame Relay is a more modern packet-switching standard. Its faster than X.25 because it doesnt put the data through all that rigorous error-checkingit relies on the transmitting and receiving devices to sort those details out for themselves. If youre setting up a completely new application, you might choose Frame Relay over X.25. But so much existing equipment uses X.25 that the standard isnt about to go away. And Frame Relay might not be available yet in some areas. Black Box offers the best warranty program in the industryFido Protection . For more information, request FaxBack 22512 .

and accurate.

ou can count on your datas getting there safely. X.25 service is much more accurate than regular dialup. Automatic error detection and correction are built into the standardits almost impossible for an error to get by.
