Marian's father has apparently betrothed Marian to this knight in reward for saving his life. Robin's impression of this knight is summed up in his statement, "All I can say is that you strike me as about the weirdest mixture of ruffian and gentleman that I have ever come across in all my days." Sir Jack wants to become rich by marrying Marian for her father's estate. The plot thickens as the Sheriff of Nottingham has his own desires as well. The jealousy interplay is fond between Robin and Sir Jack because Sir Jack thinks "You see - I make it a rule, in battle or in love, never to fight fair!"
