Thermodynamics

The document contains multiple thermodynamics problems involving concepts like heat transfer, work, internal energy, entropy, steam cycles, and refrigeration cycles. It asks the reader to determine values like heat, work, temperature, pressure, volume, and efficiency based on initial conditions and thermodynamic process descriptions provided. The problems cover both closed and open systems undergoing various constant pressure, volume, temperature and adiabatic processes in both cyclic and non-cyclic arrangements.

Process 2-3; Constant pressure process in which 125 kJ of heat is rejected. Process 3-4; adiabatic process. If the work done during constant pressure process in the cycle is 30 kJ, determine, (i) adiabatic work and (ii) the values of internal energy at all salient points by taking its initial values as 110 kJ. (a) A reversible engine operates between a source at 600oC and a sink at 30oC. The power developed by the engine is used to derive a reversible refrigerated operating between 30oC and -10oC. The engine receives 500 kJ of heat from the source and the combined engine refrigerator produces a net work output of 300 kJ. Determine the following: (i) (ii) (iii) The heat absorbed by the refrigerator from the evaporated. Net heat transfer to the reservoir at 30oC. Calculate the above (i) and (ii) if the efficiency of the engine is 45% and the COP of the refrigerator is 2.5. Or (a) Prove the entropy is the property of a system. (b) A closed system contains air at a pressure 1 bar, temperature 300 K and volume 0.018 m3. This system undergoes a thermodynamic cycle consisting of the following three processes in series: (i) Constant volume heat addition till pressure becomes 5 bar, (ii)

Constant pressure cooling, and (iii) Isothermal heating to initial state. Represent the cycle on T-S and p-V plots and evaluate the change in entropy for each process. Take cp = 0.718 kJ/kg K and R = 0.287 kJ/kg K. (a) With neat sketch explain the working of reheat Rankine cycle and derive the thermal efficiency equation. (b) A container of 0.5 m3 volume contains a mixture of statured steam and saturated water at 250oC. If the mass of liquid present is 15 kg, determine, (i) the pressure, (ii) the mass, (iii) the specific volume, (iv) the specific enthalpy, (v) the specific internal energy and (vi) the specific entropy. Steam at boiler outlet = 120 bar and 500oC Reheat pressure = 10 bar Reheat temperature = 450oC Condenser pressure = 0.1 bar Determine the, (i) quality of steam at turbine exhaust, (ii) cycle efficiency and (iii) steam flow rate.
