New Roads Opened Up For Evacuation As Forces Race To Beat Rains; 22,000 Still Out Of Reach

he government argues that the demand to immediately declare the tragedy in Uttarakhand a national calamity is based on the mistaken assumption that funds are being held up because such a categorization has not happened. It may be true that declaring the current situation a national calamity will make no difference to ofcial fund ows, but there is a larger picture the government is missing. When a tragedy is ofcially declared a national calamity, it also serves a signalling function, both for the government machinery and for the country at large. It helps channelize energies of both ofcialdom and civil society into dealing with the tragedy. If only for that reason, it needs to be done, and now.

On Saturday , bad weather and fresh destruction of newly-erected infrastructure impeded rescue. Security forces were unable to clear Kedarnath Valley and airlifted only 500 out of Badrinath where at least 8,000 are still stuck. According to the forecast with us, rain is likely on Monday and Tuesday . Even 3-4 cm of rain may hamper our work. Our choppers cannot navigate through the clouds in the valley, said Air Marshal S B Deo, chief of air operations. Much of Saturday was spent in re-establishing broken roads and bridges in the Badrinath axis, building helipads at Auli and Gaurikund and opening new roads, namely in Uttarkashi and Kedarnath. With the infrastructure in place, the forces hope to step up rescue work on Sunday.

HORRIFIC
Dehradun: In the two days that Narendra Modi has been in Uttarakhand, he has managed to completely rile not just the Congress government of Vijay Bahuguna but also the administrative staff involved in rescue operations at Kedarnath, Badrinath and Uttarkashi. But above all, he has managed to bring home some 15,000 stranded Gujarati pilgrims. The Gujarat CM, who flew in on Friday evening, held a meeting till late in the night with his crack team of five IAS, one IPS, one IFS and two GAS (Gujarat Administrative Only for Gujaratis, P 20 Service) officers. Two DSPs and five police inspectors were also part of his delegation. They sat again with the nitty-gritty of evacuation in a huddle that a senior BJP leader said lasted till 1am on Saturday . Around 80 Toyota Innovas were requisitioned to ferry Gujaratis to safer places in Dehradun as were four Boeings. On Saturday , 25 luxury buses took a bunch of grateful people to Delhi. The efforts are being coordinated by two of the senior-most IAS officers of Gujarat, one currently stationed in Delhi and another in Uttarakhand.
AN APPEAL
Dehradun: Tragedies bring out the best in human beings. And sometimes the worst. It transforms some into heroes and degenerates others into scoundrels. The Uttarakhand floods once again proved just that. Major Mahesh Karki of the 5/5 Gorkha Rifles was on leave from June 12 to July 7. He was driving from Dehradun to Badrinath with his wife, two kids and mother-in-law in his SUV when the terrible rains of June 15 caught him at Karnaprayag. They still went ahead and reac-
hed Joshimath the next evening. There, the road had collapsed and they were told to turn back. He had two choices. He could return home or do something for the 25 people stuck on the other side of the road. I just couldnt hold myself Sold at 10 times the MRP, P 20 back, he said on Saturday . Mujhse raha nahi gaya. So he asked his wife to wait with the children and braved the ravaged stretch to fetch the stranded lot, four at a time as carrying more in such bad weather was risky . Finally , he brought all of them to
safety at a point near Govindghat from where the Army took over. But you need to write this, Karki says. There are some who have lost all humanity . I saw hoteliers charging Rs 3,000 for rooms that cost Rs 500. There are a lot of people who are taking advantage of the situation. Everyone is so helpless that no one has the strength to fight. Renu D Singh, who runs Samadhan, an NGO that works with trafficked women, has set up monitoring centres across the state to spot and report homeless women, mostly those who have lost their husbands or fathers.

The proportion of married working women taking investment decisions is even lower at 13%. In other words, an overwhelming majority of around seven in every eight married women, although working, dont decide where to put their money. Overall, 23%, or less than one in every four working women, take their own financial decisions about where and how to invest. This number may have been skewed a bit because 73% of the divorced and working women and 68% of the widowed and working women, took their own financial decisions.
New Delhi: Two weeks after a girl from south Delhi was found hanging at a Rohini police station, a 38-year-old woman died in police custody on Saturday after she was picked up along with her husband after a dispute between the two. The woman, Maya, had an argument with her husband, Tarakeswar Sharma, at their residence in Bharat Nagar in the morning. Her mother-inlaw panicked and called the police. Around noon, the couple was taken to Dwarka North police station in southwest Delhi where they were allegedly beaten up. Head constable Laxmi Singh then reportedly decided to drop Maya home. Cops claim that Laxmis bike was hit by an auto following which Maya was admitted to the ESI Hospital in Punjabi Bagh. She died around 2.30pm. Her family members questioned why Maya was taken to the police station and why she was admitted to the hospital in Punjabi Bagh instead of the assigned district government hospital, DDU. Police refused comment.
