Zorin OS
The plans were to create an Ubuntu based Linux distribution for Microsoft Windows users who were having a tough time switching over to Linux. Plans were to release Zorin OS on the 1st of January 2009 but the release was delayed due to technical difficulties. The first beta of Zorin OS was released on the 5th of May 2009. The second beta, Zorin OS Lite beta, was released on the 30th of May 2009. Zorin OS Lite beta was a stripped down version of the original beta released earlier the same month. Plans of another Zorin OS project, Zorin OS Educational, were canceled. This was going to be a Zorin OS operating system based on Zorin OS Lite, aimed at educating children. Zorin OS Lite became Zorin OS and the original Zorin OS (from the first beta) was canceled. The first stable version of Zorin OS was released on the 1st of July 2009. Zorin OS 1.0 gained over 4000 visitors of which 1000 of them started using Zorin OS in its first week of release. Zorin OS was tested in Kenya and other African countries for education. This programme was set up by Camara (Charity), an Irish charity that ships used computers to Africa to educate the public there. They are currently using Camarabuntu but may switch to Zorin OS if tutorials and other support is created for Zorin OS. Zorin OS Limited Edition '09 was released on 7 December. This was a preview version of Zorin OS 2.0. It was only available to purchase on DVD. (More info coming soon) On 1 January 2010, Zorin OS 2.0 was released. This new version included a redesigned user interface, a new theme, many new wallpapers, new and updated progams, extra features and much more. A new brighter theme called "Shine" was introduced, many new programs were also introduced such as the Kino video editor and the Empathy IM client. This was the most successful version of Zorin OS as it currently has over 36000 users.
Zorin OS is made for ease-of-use but it also includes a host of other interesting features such as the advancedGIMP image manipulation program, the Firefox web browser, the OpenOffice.org office suite and much more, the Rhythmbox music player and much more. Zorin OS includes a desktop tweaking program called Ubuntu Tweak to further customise the desktop. Zorin OS also comes with a program called WINE which lets you run Windows programs on your Zorin OS machine. Another preinstalled program called PlayOnLinux makes it even easier to install Windows programs to the Zorin OS installation. You can set some desktop effects using a program called Compiz which is also preinstalled with Zorin OS.
