WATER SOFTENING PROCESS
Water softening is a process through which cations that cause water hardness (calcium and magnesium) are eliminated and replaced by sodium,
forming more soluble salts and avoiding its precipitation and incrustation.
on exchange resins are small polymer beads with a higly developed structure of pores on the surface which have greater affnity for calcium and
magnesium.
Ion exchange resins regeneration is made with sodium chloride (common salt) especially designed for water treatment.
WATER SOFTENING STAGES
SERVICE
Water to be treated fows through the resin layer.
Ion exchange is performed.
Calcium and magnesium cations are retained in the resin.
Sodium cations are released into water.
REGENERATION
Exchange capacity of the resin is limited; when most sodium cations have been already exchanged in the resin, the regeneration process should
be performed.
A brine saturated solution (Sodium Clhoride) is introduced.
Reverse exchange process resin regeneration.
Sodium cations saturation from the brine solution recovers resin to its original state.
The resulting concentrated solution of calcium and magnesium cations are directed to the drain.
System prepared for new cycle after rinsing.
Basic stages for this process are:
Service.
Backwash.
Recharge and slow rinse.
Fast rinse.
Filling up the brine tank.

TYPES OF WATER SOFTENERS
A very important factor to take into account in order to choose a water softener are the type of control valves to be used.
Time clock regeneration: The regeneration is performed by a timer, which can set the day and the time to start regeneration.
Mechanical metered regeneration: The control of the regeneration is made indicating the water demand, calculating water hardness and
exchange capacity to schedule the regeneration accordingly. Water consumption will be detected with a meter and regeneration will be start
according to the settings.
Electronic metered regeneration: Includes a micro processed system that allows the user to interpret the installation consumption and exchange
capacity data of the water softener, generating statistical calculations of average consumption, determining the right moment for regeneration.
Proportional metered regeneration: The micro processed system is very similar to the previous one. The difference is in the salt consumption
adjustment and regeneration times performed by the controller when the cycle is started, according to the real exhausted exchange capacity.
ADVANTAGES
Softened Water:
Provides healthier personal hygiene: smooth skin, soft hair, better shaving, etc.
Important savings in detergent and cleaning products consumption.
Easier cleaning, as it avoids the generation of hard-elimination substances.
Helps keeping clothes soft, with brighter colours and extending their wear out.
Improves food cooking, by reducing cooking time and keeping its taste.
Avoids encrustations and preserves a good conservation of the house appliances, extending their lifespan.
Reduces energy consumption in water heating elements. Calcium formations cause, among other inconvenients, thermal insulating effects.
Minimizes the breakdown and maintenance risk of electrical appliances, boilers and heaters.
Water softeners are reliable, easy to install and their maintenance is inexpensive.

REVERSE OSMOSIS PROCESS
Although municipal water treatment plants assure water potability, it is possible to improve drinking water quality by eliminating those salts and
dissolved elements that give a bad taste to water.
Reverse osmosis is based on the application of pressure to a concentrated dissolution in order to force its fow through a semi permeable
membrane. This way, most of the dissolved salts are retained, obtaining water with lower salt concentration levels.
.
Reverse osmosis systems retain salts, organic compounds, micro organisms and particles.
Conditioning factors:
Various factors take part in the reverse osmosis process: Mains water supply quality, pressure and temperature, facilities and maintenance
performed to the system (flter changes, regular disinfections.)
A residential R.O. system is designed to treat drinking water only.
The quality of the treated water will depend on the quality of mains water.
A proper pressure will considerably improve the equipment performance and water quality.
t is necessary to perform regular maintenance of flters (6 or 12 months) to guarantee the best membrane effciency.
REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMS
Main components:
Sediment pre-flter: Eliminates particles in suspension, which are the origin of obstructions.
Activated carbon pre-flter: Protect the membrane from chlorine that could cause its deterioration.
R.O. membrane: Generally made of polyamide, it retains dissolved salts, microorganisms and suspended particles in water.
Flushing: t regulates the fow to the drain line.

FILTRATION PROCESS
The objective of fltration is to protect facilities and installations, retaining impurities, sand or non-desired particles that may be present in the
mains water supply, decreasing its quality and causing various inconveniences to the end user.
Filtration consists in fowing water through a fltering media, in order to retain and separate all the solids in suspension.
FILTRATION SYSTEMS
The systems used in domestic and commercial installations for water distribution are replaceable flter cartridges.
These flters usually include:
Cartridge holders: Housing of the flter cartridge.
Filter Cartridge: of variable characteristics, depending on the material, shape and application (string wound, microffbers, pleated, washable
mesh in PP or SS ...)
The fltration grade is expressed by its pore size in microns (m) consequently being the size of the impurities retained.
Other cartridges: They can be installed in the same housing with other objectives:
Activated carbon: elimination of chlorine, THMs and other VOCs in drinking water, installed only at the point of use.
Polyphosphates: preserves inlays and corrosion of pipes and metal parts of the installation.
Self-cleaning flters; characteristics and main advantages of these flters are:
They allow the washing of the flter mesh without having to dismantle and replace the flter cartridge.
Backwashing makes them a lot more effective.
During the backwash, the operation of the flter is not interrupted.
Direct discharge of backwashed water to drain avoiding water losses.
ADVANTAGES OF A FILTER INSTALLATION
It improves water quality, being cleaner, clearer and more crystalline.
Avoids damage to the piping, appliances or industrial equipment.
Prevents pitting corrosion: Extremely localized corrosion that leads to the creation of small holes in the metal.

DOSING AND CONTROL SYSTEMS
DOSING AND CONTROL SYSTEMS
30
Chemical dosing consists in the addition of chemicals to water through dosing pumps, to change its chemical composition according to every
installation needs. This type of treatment covers a wide range of possibilities, but in terms of water for human consumption, its main application
is the dosage of an oxidant, typically hypochlorite (chlorine), to assure its desinfection and eliminate the risk of pathogen micro-organisms that
may be harmful for consumption.
There are various dosing systems depending on their operating principle:
DOSING A CONTINOUS FLOW
Dosing to constant fow is used in applications where the fow of water to be treated is kept constant. The pump will operate continuously and can
only adjust the constant percentage volume of the estimated fow.
PROPORTIONAL DOSING
Proportional fow dosing is appropriate in those installations where the fow of water to be treated is variable and consists of the doses needed
depending on the signal received from a pulse emitting water meter installed in the pipeline, through which circulates the water to be treated, thus
adjusting the fow rate to be metered.
MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEMS
These systems are suitable for those installations where the two previous methods are inadequate or require a more precise dose of the chemical
dosage in water. It consists in controlling the operation of the dosing pump through an electronic unit that does the readings of the selected
parameters in treated water, dosing as necessary and only stopping the dosage when the set value is reached. For proper operation of this system
it must have certain water accumulation, being necessary to generate its recirculation to carry out a continuous measurement and adjustment of
the required levels of product dosed.
Important notes to consider:
The pH between 6.8 and 7.2 is optimal for the proper performance of disinfection. If we consider this point, by measuring and controlling pH we
would complement the previous systems.
Minimal contact time of chlorine in water is between 30 and 40 minutes.
The recommended concentration for drinking water is between 0.2 and 0.6 ppm of free residual chlorine.

SMARTWATCH
SmartWatch is an automatic control system that measures pH and residual free chlorine
levels in water.
The main advantage of this system is that it carries out free chlorine measurements using
colorimetrics (DPD), a method that has been successfully used in photometers for many
years and is renowned for its reliability.
The all-new SmartWatch system also measures Redox potential and water temperature. It
can also be included the measurement of total chlorine (DPD-3), conductivity, turbidity and
fow rate.
A specially designed software allows to control the system from a PC, via Internet, mobile
phone or local control.
The system allows users to access information in real time as well as see the operational
history of the device. It incIudes: reading of chlorine (DPD-1), pH (includes sensor), Redox
(includes sensor), temperature (includes sensor) and software for local connection (not
internet).
The internet communication equipment includes: modem, antenna, software license up to 5
controllers.
