OBJECTIVES
Students will Be aware of environmental issues locally and globally. Understand the interconnectedness of environmental issues. Be able to participate meaningfully in environmental contexts. Be able to research, organize, and present a 10-minute presentation about an environmental issue. Feel confident using English in researching and presenting on environmental issues. Feel confident about using specialized vocabulary regarding the environment and sustainability. Be in a position to continue developing individual interests in environmental problems. Be in a position to discuss environmental issues and effect change with regard to environmental problems in their home communities and future places of study.
GRADING
This class is a pass/fail class, which means that all coursework must be completed, and students must maintain a 70% or better on all class work and homework.
COURSEWORK
Homework: In order to make the most of the course, you will need to complete the homework assignments, which will mostly consist of reading and reflective questions. 1
Middlebury-Monterey Summer Intensive College English Final Project: In accordance with the different perspectives of the specific environmental problem being presented in class, students will choose an environmental issue as a group, research and give a 10-minute presentation. Participation: Students need to participate in class discussions, activities, and exercises.

POLICIES
Translation To effectively learn a language, you must use it in practical daily tasks, not just study it in the classroom. Therefore, you must make a genuine effort to speak and read and think in English outside of class as well as in class. In class, you must use an English-English dictionarynot a translatorand you must explain concepts in English rather than translating for your classmates. Attendance Since these classes are designed to build skills, you must attend them and participate. Please make every effort to come to class, and to come prepared and on time. However, if you need to be absent you should let your instructor know before class, if possible, and explain the reason for your absence. Missing more than three classes will result in a failing grade. Late Work Late work will only be accepted if you have asked for permission in advance or if you were sick and had an excused absence. You are responsible for finding out what work you miss when you are absentask another student, or contact your teacher. You must complete the class work and homework you miss by the next class. Because this course is very intense and very short, there is no time for make-up work, and it will be very difficult to catch up if you fall behind. Please communicate with your instructors if you are worried about completing your coursework. They will be happy to work with you and help you to be successful. Academic Integrity Under no circumstances is it acceptable to use the work of others as your own.
