PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners,
We often refer to words and phrases like secured borders, illegal and undocumented, deported, and immigration as Hot Button issues. No news here, except that the current social climate, then, renders words and phrases from todays readings also as potential hot buttons For instance, what would Isaiah have to say about our border and immigration concerns today, when thousands of years agospeaking as the voice of God to the peoplehe had already said:
I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language from them I will send fugitives to the nations and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations Some of these I shall take as priests
By the way, our annual Assembly of Priests will be taking place soon, on the first Monday of October. Each year we welcome the 10 to 15 new priests from other countries, who have come here to serve as parish priests and chaplains. Our Archbishop has often asked, What would we do without them? And from St. Paul to the Hebrews, what are we to understand about his instruction?
Make straight paths for your feet, That what is lame may not be disjointed but healed.
So often, it seems to me, that we rush to quick and hasty solutions to our problems here in our country (not necessarily in our Church), and wind up having to rethink things. What is lame and disjointed in our system of rules and laws, often needs more time to heal and recover and recover properly, before we can trust that there will be a lasting remedy to what ails us. And from the Gospel of Luke, how do we apply Jesus declaration: [?]
And people will come from the east and the west, and from the north and the south, and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, And some are first who will be last.
As citizens and lawmakers trying to do the right thing, but more importantly as Christians and wanting to be counted among the God fearing, it seems that we only measure ourselves against the Word of God after we have already painted ourselves into a purely secular corner. Why is that?

Update on SB-101
A note of thanks to all who participated in the recent signing of postcard petitions. SB-131 did not receive enough yes votes to pass out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee on August 14. The early indication is that the actions of the Los Angeles Archdiocesan delegation were decisive in this decision some of our targets abstained which was the key to the bill not getting enough votes to pass. We have a great, unexpected and temporary victory. The bill was granted reconsideration which means it can be brought for a vote anytime in the next two weeks before the Legislature adjourns on August 30. Please provide a copy of your childs Baptismal certificate when you submit your registration form. We look forward to having your child as part of our program. Cristina Cullen dre@st-rita.org 355-3841 Did you know? Always keep an up-to-date photo of your child. One of the most important tools for law enforcement in missing children cases is a current, good quality photograph. It should be a recent, head and shoulder color photo in which the childs face is clearly discernible. It should be of school portrait quality, and the background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photo should be in digitized form and available on a CD or flash drive. This minimizes the time needed to disseminate the photo to law enforcement. The photograph should be updated at least every six months for children 6 or under, than annually, or when a childs appearance changes.

In the name of advancing our St. Rita Pastoral Plan of 2007 and our overall Master Plan, we began seriously entering into a time of Christian Stewardship Renewala time of placing time, treasure, and talent in the service of the Lord right here in our wonderful and, indeed, blessed portion of the Lords vineyard. We are already in the preparation stages for holding our second annual Ministry Fair, that you may remember was so high-spirited and successful last year. Im sure you also recall that we entered a time of feasibility study that included personal interviews and an in-pew survey at all of the weekend masses to test the waters of a possible Capital Campaign. As we move forward, I would like you to be aware of the following: The overall scope of the originally envisioned Campaign and its three phases has been adjusted (and in some cases reduced) to match levels of support by our parishioners. While we reported that 97% of parishioners are in agreement that St. Rita should conduct a Capital Campaign to repair, upgrade, and renew in order to facilitate our parish life and ministry, what the Capital Campaign should ultimately accomplish has shifted. I am confident that the scope of our Campaign will convince you that your voices were heard. After all, only what the parish has indicated it would support is ultimately doable. With input from Campaign consultants, our Parish Councils, and further study of successful parish campaigns, we are hoping to announce Campaign plans in mid-fall of this year. To aid and guide us in planning for a successful Campaign, I am happy to announce, that we have retained Laura Asok of CCS as our On-site Campaign Coordinator. Laura was the chief interviewer from our feasibility study process. As pastor, I have never been more excited for St. Rita Parish! And once you begin learning (rather soon) of all of the blessings and opportunities for furthering Jesus mission of salvation and redemption right here in our little parish of St. Rita, I know that you will share that excitement and be eager to see our Campaign reach its goals. With full heart, this pastor is giving his all to this holy cause! Msgr. Richard
