THE dad of the youngest person in North Lincolnshire to receive an Asbo has told how he tried to keep his son under control.
Eleven-year-old Charlie Rhodes, who lives with his father on Scunthorpes Grange Lane North, was handed a two-year Asbo after he committed criminal damage to buildings across North Lincolnshire. Andrew Rhodes admitted his sons actions were bad and said he hoped their recent house move would curb the problems. I didnt want him to get the Asbo and I didnt want him in the paper, he said. I know it was bad and Ive been fined 600. It doesnt feel great but its got to be paid because Im his father at the end of the day . He told the Telegraph about the employment sacrifices he made to raise his son the best he can. Mr Rhodes said he worked as a roofer in Ireland for two years before he moved back to Scunthorpe

to look after his son permanently . He said: I gave up work as a roofer in Ireland and Ive brought him up for the last year-and-a-half. Hes a good lad at home. We have moved. Hes started at Brumby . I gave him a couple of weeks to settle in and I knew he would make new friends. And hes not in that other crowd any more. Hes a likeable little lad and hes so talented its unbelievable. I love him to bits and Im doing my best for him and we will get there. Hes got new friends and he doesnt hang around with older children, which is what I wanted. I hope that now hes away this will stop. The two-year order also prohibits Rhodes from engaging, whether by himself or instructing, encouraging or inciting others, in any behaviour that does or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any person not of the same
If he is found to have breached the ASBO and the attached four conditions, he could face custody. Anthony Mowbrey, outlining the need for an Asbo, said: On October 9 Charlie Rhodes has been convicted of a number of offences and was sentenced by way of a referral order. Those offences were of criminal damage and a number of other matters, less significant assault. Rhodes was convicted of six offences including criminal damage, burglary and theft on August 19. He was also convicted of battery on August 31, battery and theft on September 15, and was subject to a section four public order on August 31. Following this, a nine-month referral order household as himself within North Lincolnshire. It also bans him from entering, attempting to enter or remaining in any private premises, including garages, sheds or gardens within North Lincs that is not his home address without the consent of the owner or occupier. One woman, who lives in the Grange Lane area, said:
was imposed on him for the convictions. In mitigation, defence solicitor Simon Davies said it was Rhodes first appearance in court and said the youngster had committed other criminal offences while with friends. Mr Davies said: Its for offences of widespread graffiti. I expect that Charlie went along with Levi Muskett and Kane Muskett. He has done other criminal offences when hes been with them. He told the court Rhodes had since stopped seeing them. He added: Charlie likes to play football with his new friends. Hes moved address, hes left his friends and has moved on. But the court found the Asbo was necessary to protect persons in North Lincolnshire from further anti-social acts committed by him. you cant touch me attitude that brings contentment. Another business owner in the area said: Youths all hang around in gangs at the back, 10 to 15 people at night sitting outside. Im so fed up of the gangs. Ive got high blood pressure sometimes I get very upset. Lots more needs to be done.
Opinion: Page 12.
Ive had graffiti on the front and all around the back of the shop. We did have lots of trouble around the back. In the afternoon its fine but its when the kids come home from school and the dark nights when things happen. I dont think an Asbo will teach him. Its difficult, but I dont think it stops them. I think its the
