    Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary General Information Area- 130.78square.kilometers. Best season- October-May.

    Location- The sanctuary is situated in the northern region of Western Ghats and covers three districts i.e. Thane, Raigad, Pune. Explore the beauties of Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary! The sanctuary is situated in the northern region of Western Ghats. It covers the area of three districts i.e. of Pune, Raigad, and Thane. The sanctuary spreads over an area of around 130.78square.kilometers. One can also see the famous Jyotirlinga temple of the god Shiva. Thousands of devotees visit the place on the day of the Maha Shivaratri and also on weekdays. It is here that the two tributaries i.e. Ghod and Bhima of the river Krishna originate. Some chief places to see within the sanctuary are Nagphani Point, Vanaspati Point, Bombay Point, Gupt Bhimashankar. The time period between Octobers to May is the ideal time for visiting the place. Flora- The natural vegetation of the place is mostly Southern tropical semi evergreen. There are various types of trees, plants, herbs, shrubs etc. found here. Some of the chief trees seen here are Mango, Hirda, Bamboo, Jamun, Behda etc. Fauna- The sanctuary is a home to various species of animals like Leopards, Sambar, Hyena, Barking deer, Wild boar, Malabar giant squirrels and many more. Avifauna- There are various species of birds like Black Eagle, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Grey Jungle Fowl, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Green Pigeon, and Quaker Babbler etc.

    The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is positioned at an altitude of 2100 feet to 3800 feet, and is spread over the districts of Pune, Raigad and Thane districts of the north-western part of Maharashtra. There is a shrine in the forest of the wildlife sanctuary, which has the Jyotiralinga temple of Lord Shiva. The valley found beyond this temple is a wonderful combination of shrubs, magical herbs and plant life. The wide variety of animal species which are found in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra consists of barking deer, leopards, wild boar, sambar, hyena and langur. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary has a big number of birds like the Quaker Babbler, the Malabar Grey Hornbill, the Green Pigeon, the Malabar Whistling Thrush, the Black Eagle, the Grey Jungle fowl and many more species of birds.

    The easiest way to reach the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is to drive down from the city of Mumbai, which generally takes around 7 hours. The best time to visit the wildlife sanctuary is from the months of October to May. The tourists are suggested to carry camping gear, dry snacks, binoculars, woolen clothes and mosquito repellents.
