Connection Manager

The Hub Airport

is, by basic definition, an airport that is not the final destination for many of the passengers arriving there. They are scheduled to fly on to other destinations. To enable efficient hub management, the information on the number of passengers, their connecting flights and the minimum transfer times needs to be made available to the operations. This is especially important for ground handling operations at hub airports. The hub management application, the Connection Manager, from the UFIS product portfolio is designed to provide ground handling operations and airlines with this information. It also provides tools to enable the efficient management of this information, to provide a service to the passengers ensuring that they catch their connecting flights or if this is not possible, to recommend a suitable later connection and the services required to keep the passengers happy.

a gate change, taking into account what effect that has on the handling operation. Furthermore, with a link to the Resource Management System or Status Manager, it may be evident that an activity on the connecting flight will not be completed by the scheduled time of departure. Thus, the flight is going to be delayed anyway, giving the transfer passengers sufficient time to reach their flight. If all else fails, the passengers will miss their connections. The Connection Manager provides the information necessary to be able to deal with these passengers efficiently, minimizing their inconvenience. For example, the alternative connection flights are displayed in the Connection Manager, possibly even showing the seat availability. Thus, the handling agent can already contact the airline to reserve a seat. When the passenger arrives at the transfer desk, the check-in staff knows about this passenger's situation and knows what alternatives to offer.

A Delayed Arrival
can have an impact on the punctuality of several departures if it carries transfer passengers, mail and cargo for connecting flights. Depending on the connection time, the decision must be taken whether a departure flight should be delayed for connecting passengers or if it should depart on time and the passengers rebooked on other flights. To make this decision, it is necessary to have an overview of all related flights and the connection times on the ground. This capability for efficient hub management is provided in the UFIS application Connection Manager. The Connection Manager includes the interpretation of Passenger Transfer Messages (PTM, IATAstandard telex format) and the data from a departure control system or other systems, building a relation between the original flight and all outbound connections.

All Connections are Visualized Individually

and critical connecting times are highlighted red in order to support the organization of special procedures, where necessary. Critical connection times are determined through violation of minimum connection times for the airport, if there are any passengers affected. The Connection Manager will be started to evaluate the transfer situation for the current flight schedule. It will show all connection information to other flights, the information on connection flights and the possible connection conflicts due to insufficient transfer times. The information about transfer passengers are stored after the correct interpretation of SITA telex data or data provided by a departure control system (DCS) and assigned to the relevant flight. The application provides Gantt charts to give the user an overview of all flights relative to aircraft stand and time, the flights being depicted by bars in the charts. If the user clicks onto a bar, the detailed connection information will be displayed.

Additional Costs for the Airlines

are usually the result of passengers missing connecting flights, through unused seats and complimentary services. The information provided by the Connection Manager can help keep these costs down. With an integrated solution for Operations Control based on UFIS products, the use of this information is made much easier. Through the information from the PTM, the operator knows how many transfer passengers are arriving and which connecting flights are affected. If to meet a connection, the connection flight would only need to be delayed slightly, then this could be a possibility. Perhaps this delay could be minimized or avoided completely by changing the gate of the flight. With an integrated flight information system like UFIS it would be possible to make

The user can see the statuses of all flights within a certain timeframe. Colors in the flags in the corners of the bars indicate the flight status (TMO, scheduled, estimated, landed, on-block and so on). Bar or grid lines that are marked red indicate connection conflicts. The body color of a bar indicates arrival or departure flights. For conflict investigation, the lower part provides a list of connection information with the respective colors - red for a

particular conflict and white for no conflict. The main window has splitter bars to resize the areas however the user desires. Each window stores its last position in the Microsoft Windows registry database so that it reopens at the previous position with the same size as previous. Thus, the user can arrange the desired window positions and reuse the setting in the future.
