    LESSON PLAN (POST PRIMARY)

    Lesson Topic: Macbeth-Parts of a Play Class: Year 8 Advanced English Date: 28/11/13 Room: F4 Period/Time: 1:15-2:15 Parts of a play/story Plot events for Act II, Macbeth American Thanksgiving Area of Programme of Study or Subject Specification Addressed: Skills and capabilities to be developed: Working with others Creativity Reading aloud Identifying parts of a story Understanding Shakespearean quotes

    Learning Intentions: Pupils will be able to: -individually translate small sections of Shakespearean text into modern English. -read fictional literature aloud amongst a small group of peers. -identify the setting of Macbeth. -understand the function and importance of the five parts of a play/story.

    Success Criteria( where applicable): Students will begin to understand and characterize Macduff. Differentiation: Students who finish early will be given extension activities (i.e. Think About It, decorating hand turkey) Extra attention to Enya when demonstrates appropriate behaviour.

    Teaching Points: Translation exercise (15 min)

    Teacher/Pupil Activities: -Teacher passes out Act II Scene iv blank comic strips and students take out Macbeth Livewire books -Students are assigned a number 1-5 -Teacher explains that students will complete the corresponding comic translation -Students have 1-2 minutes to translate their section of the comic into modern English -Students who finish early may answer the Think about it question on the page -When time is up, teacher explains that the students are going to have a few minutes to walk around the room and copy the translations from other students for sections they dont have -Students take one minute to read through the answers -As a class, students walk through the scene verbally -Students open workbooks to parts of a play list (setting, characters, theme, plot, language) -Students must fill out setting, character, and language for Macbeth -Teacher will walk students through setting and then leave language task on the board -When students have finished, they may continue decorating their turkey -Once all students have finished the appropriate sections on worksheet, teacher will instruct them to write one part of the play on each finger -Teacher instructs students step by step to turn over turkey and write setting, character and translated quote on the back of the matching finger -Students will have time to finish decorating the turkeys and hang them on the wall -Teacher shows Prezi about American Thanksgiving (briefly explains history, customs and traditions) -Students have 60 seconds to quick write to the prompt What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? -Each student shares one item on their list -Students bring out planners and write up homework, teacher passes out copies of Shakespeare storybook -If time, students may ask questions about Thanksgiving

    Work and attentiveness during individual translation time

    Language task: Select ONE (1) of the following lines. Write it in your language spot in your workbook on Parts of a Play, and below the line, write a translation in modern English.

    Witches: Fair is foul and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air. King Duncan: Go pronounce his death, and with his former title greet Macbeth. Lady Macbeth: Thou wouldst be great; art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it. Macduff: Lest our old robes sit easier than our new!
