Haunted Watts
Haunted Watts
by a campus priest after residents believed they had experience ghost scares. By: Brooke Biolo
Sophomore Salve Regina student, Amanda Iacampo, quietly tried to study in her Watts-Sherman dorm room one evening. In the next couple minutes, three of the Command hooks hung up in her room mysteriously popped off the wall, even though there was nobody around to provoke them. This event scared Iacampo and led her to believe there was someone or something else with her in the dorm. According to Iacampo, this is far from the only supernatural scare in the building. Many students who live in Watts and have similar spook stories, attended an exorcism in the building on November 10th at 8p.m. Mercy Center Priest, Father Kris von Maluski, performed the exorcism. The exorcism was not to literally remove a demon spirit, but instead to invoke the love of Jesus Christ over any evil, explained Maluski. The procedure was a house blessing, but if there were and bad energies or spirits in the building the prayers recited and the holy water sprinkled would have warded them off, according to Maluski. Other students living in the building have experience very similar and seemingly nonsensical goings on in their dormitories as well. On October 31st around 2 a.m. a student living in the building, Julie Sylvestre, claims that her purse, which was securely on the top shelf of her closet, just fell. Nobody was anywhere near it and nothing else in the room was disturbed, Sylvestre explained. Two occupants of Watts-Sherman room 208 also claimed to experience similar scares. Two of the girls in the quad were woken up in the middle of the night by what they believe was a spirit of sorts, shaking their bed. It was not the same as the bed shaking from our movements, it was more like a vibration or rattling, said Jackie Cinquemani of room 208. Student and resident of the same quad, Jess Proulx, claims that while sleeping, she often feels as though someone is laying on top of her. Student resident of room 004, Nikki Kandalaft, claims that her picture inexplicable fell and shattered one day, even though it had been sitting there all year. I nailed it in when the year began and everything, I thought I was going crazy, all my windows were shut and I was the only one in there, Kandalaft said. The event that pushed roommates Iacampo and Sylvestre over the edge came a few days after the actual exorcism. The two were in the room with Iacampos mother, who openly confessed her disbelief in ghosts. Immediately after, the shelf in Iacampos closet that was holding up all of
her clothing and other things, collapsed and all of her belongings crashed to the ground, according to the roommates. While the girls may firmly believe there is something else in Watts, there are many non-believers living in the building as well. Strange things happen everywhere, that does not mean my room is haunted, claimed sophomore resident Steve Crawford. Father Maluski even claimed he himself has never really felt anything, but does not deny that there is a chance the girls could be on to something. The Watts Sherman building used to be a nursing home run by Baptists until Salve bought it in 1982, according to an e-scholar article on Salve heritage. Being an old nursing home, it is very likely that people died there making it a possible scene for haunting, as spirits may often return to the sight of their death, according to Father Kris. Feelings like this in Watts and on Salve campus in general are not uncommon. In his two and a half years here, Maluksi has done five or six exorcisms like this one. Maluski used a very old exorcism form that can be used without permission. Had he found or felt any sign of a demon spirit, he Maluski would have had to call the diocese, he informed. The literal exorcism simply consisted of Father Maluski walking around the building, chanting a prayer and sprinkling the edifice with holy water, according to Maluski and the residents who attended. Past students living in Watts have also experienced very similar issues. A student claimed to be in the building completely alone when every tile in his ceiling jumped, according ex watts resident, Byron Redding. There have been many complaints about weird goings on in previous years as well, according to Father Maluski. Sleeping is a little easier now for Iacampo now that she believes the spirits have relaxed. Since the incident with her mom, there have been no reports of inexplicable goings on or anything to that extent in the building, according to the residents. The heat of the scare has subsided and residents are going on with their lives post exorcism. -30Word Count: 791
