CHAMPAGNE
RED
Chateau Rauzan Segla Margaux, Bordeaux, France, 2000 Deep bright, warm probably ripe, smells rather nondescript but opens out with time. Excellent fresh, really long on the palate, balanced tannins, maturing well, taking on some nice tobacco tones. Chteau LEnclos Pomerol, Bordeaux, France, 1998 Deep ruby, dark-fruited nose, quite plummy with a touch of chocolate. Similar on palate; roasted coffee, plums, damp earth and a touch of spice. Velvety texture finishing with good acidity and moderate length. Domaine De Courcel Pommard Grand Clos Des penots 1er Cru Pommard, Burgundy, France, 1998 Lovely, full, concentrated and complex wine here. Very good integrated tannins. Some oak. Good vigour. Very stylish. Long and most impressive. Chteau Pape Clment, Bordeaux, France, 1999 An earthy nose, with black currant and cigar wrapper. Medium bodied. Black currant, tobacco and a hint of eucalyptus. Medium length finish. Smooth and silky. Still showing a bit of tannin on the end. Pira E. & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi, Barolo, Italy, 1995 This is an excellent vintage for Barolo and it is the second vintage that Chiara made with her new vinification techniques. This wine is drinking very nicely at the moment but still has potential to age further. Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio, Tuscany, Italy, 1997 Dark ruby color, with lots of chocolate, berry and vanilla aromas, this is full-bodied and velvety, with lots of fruit and a long, succulent finish. A beauty from a great vintage.
Gardet Champagne Cuve Charles Gardet, Champagne, France, 1995 Fine elegant bubbles with colour pale gold, which will deepen with time. The bouquet is fine and complex with flowery aromas. The Dom Perignon of the Charles Gardet range.
WHITE
Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumes Clos de la Truffiere, Burgungy, France, 2001 Delicious wine with a powerful structure for a Chassagne. Intense lemon/lime fruit with a nice liquid minerality on the long, razor-like finish. Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes, Burgungy, France, 2001 Lovely lemon and baked lemon nose with a touch of honey; very tasty, tangy, ripe lemon, Meyer lemon, with a touch of vanilla.
