Bioreactor Design Fundamentals
The most widely used Industrial Bioreactors are: Batch Reactors Continuous Reactors Continuous Reactors With Recycle Semi Continuous Reactors (Fill/Draw Reactors including Sequencing Batch Reactors)
DEFINITIONS Limiting Substrate The substrate or substrate(s) (energy source, carbon source and/or nutrient source) which is/are first exhausted in batch growth. This substrate(s) has a direct influence on the kinetics of cell growth.
DEFINITIONS In Excess The substrate or substrate(s) (energy source, carbon source and/or nutrient source) which is/are NOT exhausted at the end of batch growth. This substrate(s) has NO EFFECT on the kinetics of cell growth.
Bioeactor Design Fundamentals (Contd) k1* and A are combined to form another constant k and the rate expression becomes: RATE = k (S / KS + S) Where k = maximum rate of transport of S ( mol / h) When S is much larger than KS : RATE k f (S) When S is similar to KS : RATE = f (S)
