The Event
Doesnt time y! Did you know that it is 50 years since the rst students were admitted to study dentistry in Cardiff? To recognise this landmark, the School of Dentistry is holding a Golden Jubilee celebration on the 16-17th May at the Vale Hotel Resort, Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan. The weekend event will provide an excellent opportunity for alumni and staff to celebrate together the Schools many achievements in dental research, teaching and patient care. The programme will consist of a welcome BBQ on the Friday evening, followed by the Brian Cooke Lecture Day and a Gala Dinner on the Saturday. The BBQ will be a chance to relax and catch up with friends and colleagues whilst the Lecture Day will consist of CPD accredited lectures addressing all of the mandatory GDC subjects. The nal lecture will be the Brian Cooke Lecture itself, to be given by Professor Paul Dummer, who will describe the Challenges of delivering dental education in Wales. The nale will be a Gala dinner which we hope will provide an ideal setting to celebrate 50 years of dental education and professional friendship in Cardiff. The School of Dentistry is regularly ranked as being among the best dental schools in the UK for the quality of our education and research. We have also made signicant investment in our clinical, educational and research facilities, which now provide a learning and working environment that is the envy of many other dental schools in Europe. However our most valuable resource by far is our graduates and staff. We hope that the Golden Jubilee will serve as a way of keeping alumni in touch with their home university, and also be a thank you to all present and past staff who have made our School a source of pride and inspiration. This booklet contains all the information you require to attend all the events, and how you can help support current students within the School at a time of nancial challenge for us all. I do hope you will be able to join us in May for what I am sure will be a truly memorable occasion!

The Cardiff School of Dentistry Reunion Gift

Get together, give together, transform lives!
Alumni often comment that one of the best things about Cardiff was making lifelong friends while they were here. The School of Dentistry holds a biannual reunion for our alumni and staff so that you can keep in touch with the School and University, as well as re-establish friendships from the past. We greatly enjoy seeing our graduates back and it is also a great chance for you to help us to transform the lives of our students by making a gift to the Brian Cooke Memorial Fund. Established in 2011, in fond memory of the Schools rst Dean, Emeritus Professor Brian Cooke (1920 2007), the fund is awarded to the most academically deserving School of Dentistry students, in the form of Scholarships and Prizes. Reduced public funding means a greater reliance on private funding, and supporting students through scholarships, prizes and widening access programmes is a key priority for the School and the University. This funding is critical if we are to continue to attract the very best students, regardless of their nancial circumstances or country of origin. This is your opportunity to make a donation to this worthy cause. Whether you are already a donor or you have never given before, the contribution that you make this year will be invaluable to future Cardiff University dental students.

How YOUR donation will make a difference

We will see a student body that is more diverse in background, nationality, ethnicity and area of study than ever before in the Schools history. This will be because of scholarship and access programmes made possible by our alumni, friends and supporters. Our students will be the best and brightest from around the world, drawn to Cardiff by its fantastic resources and educational experience with no barriers of geography, nancial hardship or community to block their way.

The wider impact

Scholarships and prizes are important not only to the students who are fortunate enough to receive one, but also the Univer-sity, commerce, industry and to communities around the world.
