My line of work is in petroleu) for a out #' years now* so here are so)e tri+ks to get )ore of your )oney's worth for e,ery gallon.ere at the /inder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San 0ose * !A we deli,er a out & )illion gallons in a 1&2hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the ne3t day is 4et fuel* and gasoline* regular and pre)iu) grades. 5e ha,e #&2storage tanks here with a total +apa+ity of '6*7((*((( gallons. Only uy or fill up your +ar or tru+k in the early )orning when the ground te)perature is still +old. 8e)e) er that all ser,i+e stations ha,e their storage tanks uried elow ground. The +older the ground the )ore dense the gasoline* when it gets war)er gasoline e3pands* so uying in the afternoon or in the e,ening....your gallon is not e3a+tly a gallon. In the petroleu) usiness* the spe+ifi+ gra,ity and the te)perature of the gasoline* diesel and 4et fuel* ethanol and other petroleu) produ+ts plays an i)portant role. A '2degree rise in te)perature is a ig deal for this usiness. 9ut the ser,i+e stations do not ha,e te)perature +o)pensation at the pu)ps. 5hen you're filling up do not s:uee;e the trigger of the no;;le to a fast )ode If you look you will see that the trigger has three <#= stages- low* )iddle* and high. >ou should e pu)ping on low )ode* there y )ini)i;ing the ,apors that are +reated while you are pu)ping. All hoses at the pu)p ha,e a ,apor return. If you are pu)ping on the fast rate* so)e of the li:uid that goes to your tank e+o)es ,apor. Those ,apors are eing su+ked up and a+k into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your )oney. One of the )ost i)portant tips is to fill up when your gas tank is .A?@ @U??. The reason for this is the )ore gas you ha,e in your tank the less air o++upying its e)pty spa+e. Gasoline e,aporates faster than you +an i)agine. Gasoline storage tanks ha,e an internal floating roof. This roof ser,es as ;ero +learan+e etween the gas and the at)osphere* so it )ini)i;es the e,aporation. Unlike ser,i+e stations* here where I work* e,ery tru+k that we load is te)perature +o)pensated so that e,ery gallon is a+tually the e3a+t a)ount. Another re)inder* if there is a gasoline tru+k pu)ping into the storage tanks when you stop to uy gas* AO NOT fill upB )ost likely the gasoline is eing stirred up as the gas is eing deli,ered* and you )ight pi+k up so)e of the dirt that nor)ally settles on the otto). To ha,e an i)pa+t* we need to rea+h literally )illions of gas uyers. It's really si)ple to do.
