Mt. Laurel Council adopted the
2014 municipal budget at last
weeks meeting, but not before a
lengthy discussion about the
townships open space tax.
The adopted budget saw no
changes from the preliminary
budget passed in March. Taxes
will decrease $39.22 for the aver-
age assessed home of $236,952.
The budget passed by a vote of
4-1, with Councilman Jim Keenan
voting no. Keenan didnt express
any issues with the municipal
budget, but maintained his stance
on decreasing the open space tax
from eight cents to six cents.
With average property values
increasing with Mt. Laurels
revaluation last year, many home-
owners will see a large increase
in their open space tax bill.
Keenan proposed a plan to sus-
pend two cents of the open space
tax. He said 13 other municipali-
ties have suspended open space
tax without going to a referen-

The following information was
provided by the Mt. Laurel Police
Department.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 27-
year-old female of the unit block
of Sequoia Drive, Newtown, Pa.,
on April 6, for driving while in-
toxicated. She was stopped on
Route 73 at 3:43 a.m. and charged
with driving while intoxicated
and released pending a municipal
court hearing.
The owner of a property on the
unit block of West Wood Lane re-
ported a burglary and theft to an
unoccupied residence. The inci-
dent occurred between 6 a.m.
March 22 and 6 a.m. April 5.
Entry was gained through an un-
secured basement door. Copper
pipe, valued at an unspecified
amount, was taken.
A resident of the 100 block of
Buckingham Way reported a
stolen vehicle. The incident oc-
curred between 6:30 p.m. April 6
and 8:20 a.m. April 7. A 2008
Hyundai Elantra, valued at
$15,000, was taken.
A resident of the 100 block of
Roberts Place reported a burglary
and theft to a residence. The inci-
dent occurred on April 8, between
8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Entry was
gained by smashing the rear glass
door. Jewelry, valued at approxi-
mately $6,000, was taken. Damage
is estimated at $250.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 24-
year-old male of the unit block of
Bernwood Road, Hainesport, on
April 9 for the theft of $5,285 in
jewelry. The theft occurred on the
100 block of Knotty Oak Drive
while the suspect was employed
as a carpet cleaner. The victims
jewelry was subsequently recov-
ered and returned. He was served
with criminal complaints and re-
leased pending a municipal court
hearing.

A guest of a hotel on the 500
block of Fellowship Road report-
ed a theft. A laptop computer, val-
ued at $750, was taken from a
hotel room. The incident oc-
curred sometime between 7 p.m.
April 5, and 1 a.m., April 6. There
was no sign of forced entry to the
room.
A resident of the 2400 block
of Larchmont Place reported a
burglary and theft to a residence.
The incident occurred between 6
a.m. April 8 and 6 p.m. April 10.
Entry was reported to have been
gained through the front door.
There were no signs of forced
entry.
A member of LA Fitness on
Dearborne Circle reported a theft
from an unlocked vehicle. The in-
cident occurred in the LA Fitness
parking lot, between 8:20 p.m. and
9:50 p.m. April 10. A laptop com-
puter and a cell phone, valued at
$1,500, were taken.
A member of Giant Fitness on
Route 73 reported a theft from an
unlocked vehicle. The incident oc-
curred in the Giant Fitness park-
ing lot, between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
April 10. An iPhone, valued at
$650, was taken.
Mount Laurel Police arrested a
21-year-old male of the 6400 block
of North Lambert Street,
Philadelphia, on April 11, for
driving while intoxicated. He was
stopped on Route 38 at 1:50 a.m.
and charged with driving while
intoxicated and released pending
a municipal court hearing.

T
here seems to be a list for
everything nowadays. The best
of this, the top 10 of that, the
worst place to do such and such.
Last week, we came across a list that
took us by surprise. It is a list of the
top 10 places to retire ... in New Jersey.
Yup. New Jersey. We didnt even real-
ize that staying in the Garden State
after working age was still an option
or, rather, something that people de-
sired.
Anywho, Movoto Real Estate pub-
lished the list, starting with places
that had at least 10,000 residents (110
places), then ranking them based on
four interesting criteria:
1.) Cost of living higher is better,
because when youve worked all your
life, what you really want to do is have
your money go toward taxes and not
that trip to Rome
2.) Crime rate lower is better, well,
obviously
3.) Amenities places such as li-
braries, physicians, arts and enter-
tainment, and adult education
4.) Weather average summer tem-
perature and air quality score, which
eliminates Newark
So, by these rankings, the top 10
places to retire in New Jersey, from
one to 10, are:
Ridgewood, Tenafly, Westwood, Glen
Rock, Haddonfield, Florham Park,
Madison, Hasbrouck Heights, Prince-
ton and Ridgefield
To be sure, these are all wonderfully
beautifully places in New Jersey, well
worth celebrating and very attractive
for residents and visitors alike.
But retirement? Were not so sure
that many elderly residents would
agree with you.
Theres a reason why so many New
Jerseyans retire elsewhere its
cheaper. And, in contrast to Movotos
interpretation of the lists criteria,
cheaper is better, because most people
would rather see their hard-earned
money go toward vacations than taxes,
for example. Many retirees go to Flori-
da not just for the weather but for the
absence of a state income tax.
Maybe if New Jersey was more af-
fordable, more elderly residents would
stay at home, near their friends and
family. But since its not, many dont.
We are probably not the only ones
who laughed when we considered any
place in New Jersey other than, say, a
beach town such as Ocean City (which
ranked No. 26 on the list, behind
places such as Hoboken) a good
place to retire. And thats a shame, and
a problem all at the same time.
Our residents shouldnt have to pre-
pare to leave when they retire.

Disc golf can be appealing to
kids, families, and is free
This pertains to the up and coming sport
of disc golf. I know you're wondering, what
is disc golf ? This is an excerpt from the
Professional Disc Golf Association: "Disc
golf is played much like traditional golf. In-
stead of a ball and clubs, however, players
use a flying disc, or Frisbee. The sport was
formalized in the 1970s, and shares with
ball golf the object of completing each
hole in the fewest strokes or, in the case of
disc golf, fewest throws. A golf disc is
thrown from a tee area to a target, which is
the hole. The hole can be one of a number
of disc golf targets, the most common is
called a Pole Hole, an elevated metal bas-
ket. As a player progresses down the fair-
way, he or she must make each consecutive
throw from the spot where the previous
throw has landed. The trees, shrubs and
terrain changes located in and around the
fairways provide challenging obstacles for
the golfer. Finally, the putt lands in the
basket and the hole is completed. Disc golf
shares the same joys and frustrations of
traditional golf, whether it's sinking a long
putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fair-
way. There are few differences, though.
Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you
probably won't need to rent a cart, and you
never get stuck with a bad tee time. It is
designed to be enjoyed by people of all
ages, male and female, regardless of eco-
nomic status."
So anyway, not too long ago, I had the
idea to try to get more kids interested and
involved in disc golf. Disc golf is a sport
that can be very appealing to kids and fam-
ilies because it is relatively no cost for
discs and it is free to play. My idea for get-
ting more kids involved was to run a
league for kids. Introducing kids to disc
golf will not only give them a wonderful

Why dont we, as a council,
suspend the tax, suspend it by two
cents without going to a referen-
dum? he asked.
Keenan said the average de-
crease in municipal taxes is being
negated by the open space tax. If
the open space tax rate remains at
eight cents, the average taxpayer
in Mt. Laurel would pay an addi-
tional $75.88 in open space tax.
Keenan said this increase
could hurt some homeowners, es-
pecially lower-income residents
and senior citizens.
Id like to help out anyone I
can in the township, he said.
Township solicitor Timothy
Prime told council a referendum
would be needed to change the
open space tax.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell informed council the
township would be unable to pay
its open space debt in the future if
the tax was lowered.
Mayor David DAntonio shared
those same feelings, saying it was
imperative the township pays off
its open space debt in a timely
manner. We have a debt, he
said. We have a significant debt
that has to be paid off.
Keenan said the township is
taking in an additional $2.2 mil-
lion in open space tax by keeping
the rate at eight cents. However,
Mitchell said the extra money is
needed to pay off the debt.
Council said in future meet-
ings it will discuss the possibility
of lowering the open space tax.
Deputy Mayor Irwin Edelson
asked Mitchell to provide more
information detailing the pros
and cons of changing the tax.
We need to know the num-
bers, he said. The people of Mt.
Laurel need to know the num-
bers.
Councilwoman Linda Bobo
also said she is open to discuss
the possibility of a referendum.
To have a referendum on the
election ballot in November, a de-
cision needs to be made by early
August.
In other news:
Council discussed applying
for a Burlington County park
grant to construct restrooms at
Memorial Field. Mitchell said an
application for the project was re-
jected due to issues with the
MUA, but said many of those is-
sues have been resolved. The
township is applying for a maxi-
mum grant of $250,000.
An ordinance approved on
second reading will change the
speed limit for the entire length of
Sharp Road. The speed limit will
change to 45 miles per hour after
a request was made by Evesham
Township to make the change.
Previously, the road did not have
a posted speed limit and the
states statutory speed limit of 50
miles per hour applies to the
road.
The next Mt. Laurel Council
meeting is scheduled for April 28
at 7 p.m. in the municipal court-
room.

Garden Club celebrates 50th anniversary

In 1964, Mt. Laurel Township
looked a lot different than it does
today.
Large amounts of open space
and farmland dominated the land-
scape. Rural, one-lane streets such
as Hartford Road had very little
traffic traversing them. Big box
stores and large-scale develop-
ments were non-existent.
It was in that rural farm town
when a group of eight women offi-
cially founded the Mt. Laurel Gar-
den Club.
Now, 50 years later, the club
continues to serve the community
in a variety of ways. With a mem-
bership of 67, it has become a big
part of the township.
The Garden Club meets once a
month at the Mt. Laurel Library.
The group gathers for lunch and
will have a gardening-related pro-
gram. This meeting format is rela-
tively unchanged from when the
club first started.
They met in each otherss
homes, had lunch and discussed
gardening things, said Jean
Thomas, a member of the club.
Thomas said the founding
members were women who cared
about improving their communi-
ty through gardening.
These women werent farm
women, she said. They cared
more about civic pride.
The clubs goals have not
changed much from 50 years ago.
Its mission is still making Mt.
Laurel beautiful with plants and
gardening, even as the township
has developed.
Theyre a very committed and
active group, club president
Cathy Hepp said.
Hepp said the township em-
braces the club just as much today
as it did 50 years ago. The club
maintains a number of large proj-
ects on township property, includ-
ing the 9-11 Memorial at Mt. Lau-
rel Memorial Park, the Arbor Day
tree donations and the planting
area at the Veterans Memorial at
Laurel Acres Park. The club also
started a planting area at the Lau-
rel Acres Park sign last year.
Ive spoken with the township
manager on how to do things,
Hepp said. They kind of give us
free rein. If were saying we want
to plant something, they let us do
it.
All the planting done by the
club comes with expenses. While
the club collects annual member-
ship fees, it still needs to do a lot of
fundraising to pay for its many
projects.
One of its largest fundraisers of
the year is coming up on April 26.
The club is holding its annual
plant sale at the Mt. Laurel Li-
brary. A number of the plants are
dug up from the gardens of mem-
bers and transported to the li-
brary to be sold.
We had one member who once
dug up hundreds and hundreds of
plants, Thomas said.
The plant sale and other
fundraisers help to fund the main-
tenance of the many projects the
garden club partakes in each year.
We have a set budget for each
year, and we remain in that budg-
et, club treasurer Maureen Crin-
nion said.
Finding members is very im-
portant to the club as well. Many
of the clubs members are accom-
plished gardeners. The club has
won awards from the Pennsylva-
nia Horticultural Society and at
the Philadelphia Flower Show in
past years.
Everyone has a different skill
set with the garden club, but they
all have a love for gardening,
Hepp said.
Each member is required to
participate in three projects each
year, helping to spread the work-
load around and allow everyone to
get involved.
The club is always welcoming
of new members as well. Hepp
said any resident of Mt. Laurel
can participate. Though the club
consists of mostly women, men
are also welcome.
Lately, the focus has been on the
clubs past and the difference it
has made over the past 50 years.
For the last five meetings,
weve been giving the history of
our club, decade by decade, Crin-
nion said.
The club has archived most of
its history and is preparing a
slideshow for its 50th anniversary
celebration on June 11 at Tavis-
tock Country Club in Haddon-
field.
The celebration will feature
special guests, food and prizes.
There will also be three $1,000
scholarships awarded to Mt. Lau-
rel high school seniors, something
the club fundraises for every year.
Mt. Laurel has gone through
many changes in the last 50 years,
but the garden clubs mission of
community and civic involvement
has always remained the same.

where they can enjoy time with
their family. The league will take
place at Stafford Woods Disc Golf
Course in Voorhees and will be
available for kids ages 16 and
under. Each league day will in-
clude a 20-30 minute clinic focus-
ing on a specific skill, followed by
a game practicing that skill, the
winner of which will get a disc.
We will then play nine holes from
a modified set of kids tees which
will be more appealing to kids,
who do not throw as far and are
not as accurate. One of the holes
will be selected as a closest to the
pin. The child that gets it closest
to the basket will win a disc as
well. First time entry will be $15
which will get participants a
lightweight disc, a mini marker
that marks where the disc lands
before you pick it up, a youth
league t-shirt that I designed, a
bag tag (tags are used as a way to
encourage the kids to play more,
the player with the best score will
get the lowest tag. This should ul-
timately lead to the best player
having the best tag) as well as an
assortment of disc golf stickers.
This players pack is worth more
than $50.
Every week thereafter, entry
will only be $5 but will not in-
clude a players pack. To get as
many people as possible involved
in the wonderful sport of disc
golf, I need to get the word out.
The next youth league date is
April 27. Future dates are May 4,
May 11, May 25 and June 8.
