Chapter 08: TORSION of Shafts: Beam4

1. The document discusses the PIPE16 element in ANSYS which can model torsion and bending of pipes and shafts. 2. The PIPE16 element is based on the BEAM4 element and includes simplifications for pipe geometry. It has 6 degrees of freedom at each node. 3. The element checks for valid values of outer diameter, wall thickness, branch lengths and angles. Shear deformation is included in the formulation.

Chapter 08 : TORSION of Shafts

PIPE16 is a uniaxial element with tension-compression, torsion, and bending capabilities. The element has six degrees of freedom at two nodes: translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions and rotations about the nodal x, y, and z axes. This element is based on the 3-D beam element (BEAM4), and includes simplifications due to its symmetry and standard pipe geometry

No branch can have a zero length or wall thickness (although branches may be deleted). The OD must not be less than or equal to zero, the ID must not be less than zero, and the corrosion thickness allowance must be less than the wall thickness. The element may be used for both thin and thick-walled situations; however, some of the stress calculations are based on thin-wall theory. The branches are assumed to have closed ends so that the axial pressure effect is included. There is no restriction on the angles of intersection of the branches. Shear deflection capability is also included in the element formulation.
