Description: Ministerial Practicum is a practical course that requires the student to fulfill at least 150 hours of practical ministry under the direction of his pastor(s). Administrator: Robert R. Gonzales Jr. is the dean and a professor of Reformed Baptist Seminary. He holds a Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Theology and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Old Testament Interpretation from Bob Jones University. He is the author of Where Sin Abounds: the Spread of Sin and the Curse in Genesis with a Special Focus on the Patriarchal Narratives (Wipf & Stock, 2010) and a contributor to the Reformed Baptist Theological Review and The Founders Journal. Credit: 3 credits Requirements: Student must complete at least 150 hours of practical ministry in the following areas: (1) Preaching/Teaching (Min: 20 hours; Max: 60 hours) The student must preach or teach a minimum of two times during the period in which hes fulfilling the ministerial practicum requirements. He may include sermon or lecture preparation time as well as actually delivery time. Formal worship services and Sunday School classes are appropriate venues as well as preaching at a rescue mission, jail ministry, nursing home, etc. (2) Worship Service Planning and/or Leading (Min: 10 hours; Max: 30 hours) The student must plan part or all of a congregational worship service as well as participating in some part of leading worship. This could include welcoming the members and visitors, giving announcements, reading Scripture, leading in prayer, and leading the singing. The student may include the preparation time. (3) The Ordinances (Min: 2 hours; Max: 10 hours) The student will assist in preparing for and participating in the administering of the ordinance of baptism and/or the Lords Supper. The students pastor will determine the degree of the students participation in the administering of the ordinance itself. (4) Visitation (Min: 8 hours; Max: 30 hours) The student will accompany a pastor to visit church members or others. This may include pastoral oversight visits, hospital visits, or visiting shut-ins. (5) Counseling (Min: 8 hours; Max: 30 hours) The student will sit in on pastoral counseling sessions with the consent of the counselee(s). This may include different types of counseling sessions as, for example, premarital counseling. (6) Evangelism (Min: 20 hours; Max: 60 hours) The student should engage unconverted people with a view to sharing the gospel outside the formal congregational service. Such occasions may include informal interaction and
z follow up with unbelievers, evangelistic Bible studies, or the public preaching of the gospel outside the regular church meetings. The student may include time spent organizing special evangelistic events. (7) Attending elders and/or deacons meetings (Min: 8 hours; Max: 20 hours) The student should attend elders and/or deacons meetings as an observer. The students pastor will determine which meetings and what part of the meetings the student may attend. The purpose is to expose the student to how a church leadership and administrative team functions together. (8) Participating in auxiliary ministries (Max: 30 hours) The student may plan and participate in auxiliary ministries such as weddings and funerals. If the student has questions about the eligibility of other church or ministry related activities, he should contact the course administrator, Dr. Gonzales (dean@rbseminary.org). Ministry log: The student should keep a log or record of his practical ministry efforts. The log should include the date, a brief description of the ministry, and the amount of time spent including any preparation time. The student should keep in view the minimum requirements for each category above as well as the maximum hours allowed. Confirmation form: When the student has completed the 150 hours of practical ministry, he should transfer the information from his personal ministry log to the official PT 921 Ministerial Practicum Form (see pages 3-5 below). Once the student completes the form, both he and his pastor should sign the form, confirming the accuracy of the information given. Then the student will send the form to the seminary to receive credit. Grading: Upon fulfilling the requirements for the course, the student will receive three credits and a pass (P) score rather than a letter grade.
