Activity B.6 F09 Workshop

This document provides instructions for an activity where students will build molecular models to visualize the geometries of various molecules. Students will start with ethane and ethane derivatives where hydrogen atoms are replaced with hydroxyl or carbon-carbon multiple bonds are introduced. They will draw Lewis structures, identify molecular geometries, bond angles, and discuss the stability and ability of the molecules to interconvert between structures.

Molecular Geometry

Activity B.6
Date: Section #: Instructor:
Name:
Models are useful for visualizing molecular geometries. In this workshop, ou will use a model
kit to construct models of a series of molecules. !ach model kit contains colored centers that can
"e used to represent different geometries a"out a central atom. #he kit also contains rods $%
lengths& that can "e used to represent a "ond "etween atom centers. 'se the shorter lengths to
represent "onds to hdrogen, and the longer lengths to represent "onds "etween an other two
atoms. !ach rod represents a single "ond "etween two atoms( a multiple "ond $dou"le, triple&
can "e represented " attaching additional rods using the appropriate atoms center and
connecting pieces.
