makes clear the group has not

abandoned its rural roots. The new
album was recorded in a solitary
cabin in Utahs Wasatch Mountains,
and a western vibe permeates the
session. The cabin is like the ever-
present instrument that you never
necessarily hear, but you feel
throughout the album, Chance
says. The method by which we
recorded the album was extremely
important to us, and that cabin
played a huge role in that.
Theres a refined, pitch-perfect
quality to Jamestown Revivals
work, which feels like a cross
between Guy Clark and the Avett
Brothers. While the group layers
keyboards, electric guitars, bass,
and drums, the instrument that
anchors their tight harmonies is
Clays Martin OM-35.
Shes been rode hard and put
away wet, but that guitar just
sounds good, Clay says. One of
these days Im going to wear a
hole clean through the spruce.
By the time that happens,
Jamestown Revival will likely
have found its own place inside
Americas heart.

Norah Jones & Billie Joe Cut a Country-Duo CD
Side projects come and go, but Foreverly is an album with
staying power. Enlisting jazz and pop great Norah Jones to
join him on a song-for-song recreation of the Everly Brothers
classic 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, Green Day
front man Billie Joe Armstrong conceived a labor of love
that is as surprising as it is affecting. A couple of years ago, I
discovered Songs Our Daddy Taught Us for the first time, and
I fell in love with it, Armstrong told Billboard. I was playing
it every day and thought it would be a cool idea to re-do the
record, but with a female singer. I thought of Norah because
she can sing anything, from rock to jazz to blues, and I knew
her harmonies would be amazing. . . . She has a really good
ear for arrangements.
Given his recording catalog to date, few people may have
suspected that rock guitarist Armstrong was such a big fan of
the pop-singing Everlys. Jones, meanwhile, has shown her
affinity for country music with the Little Willies, yet another
of the versatile singers side projects. Like Don and Phil
Everly before them, Jones and Armstrong play guitar on the
album and mine an undeniable vocal chemistry here that
makes you wish for more.

Cat Stevens Nominated
to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The artist formerly known as Cat Stevens is
finally receiving his due. A multi-platinum
recording artist, Stevens embraced the Muslim
religion in 1977, changed his name to Yusuf
Islam, sold off his guitars to charity and
became a peace activist. But he returned to
making pop albums in 2006 after a 28-year
hiatus. As of this printing, the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame had yet to announce whether
Islam had made it in, but with millions of
records sold, and a career that spawned such
acoustic-guitar-based hits as Peace Train,
Wild World, and Moon Shadow, his place
in music history is already solidified.
Foreverly Yours
Released in December, the new Coen

loosely based on folk-legend Dave Van
Ronk (played by Oscar Isaac, above)
and his years as a performer in New
Yorks Greenwich Village. Those

Van Ronks life and times should check

first released in 2005 and reviewed
