Various theories have come forward regarding the ancestral home of the
Aryans, but none prove to be authentic.

Original Home of Aryanscontroversy prevails amongst historians about the
original home of the Aryans. Historians have advocated four theories in this
respect. They have used the art of linguistics, archaeological investigation,
racial specialties etc., to prove the site of the Aryans ancestral dwelling.
!"# $uropean Theory
%hilologists li&e %. 'ilippo Sassetti and Sir (illiam )one are proponents of this
theory. According to them, Sans&rit was only a sister language and not a
parent language. They have tried to establish Sans&rits resemblance with
other $uropean languages. They elucidate that the words %itra and *atra in
Sans&rit are the same as +ater and *ater of ,atin, %ider and *ader of
%ersian and 'ather and *other in $nglish. This view hints that the Aryans
inhabited in some place in $urope and voyaged to various places and the
Aryans who came to -ndia, were an o.shoot of the $uropeans. The new view
identi/es the following centres as the original abode of the Aryans:0
!a# Hungary0According to 1r. %. 2iles and %rof. *acdonell, the ancestral
motherland of the Aryans was located in Hungary, i.e., the present0day
regions of Austria, Hungary and 3ohemia. 4attle rearing and agriculture was
possible in this region as a daily occupation. 3esides a5nity of the languages,
6ora and fauna with which the Aryans were conversant, could only be from a
cold area li&e this. 7eferences of -ndian 2ods li&e lndra and Varun have been
identi/ed in the e8cavations of 3ogha9:oi. 'urthermore, the names of
monarchs of 3abylonia and *esopotamia are parallel to the names of -ndo0
Aryans. This depicts that the Aryans arrived in -ndia, through %ersia.
However, this view has not been recognised by historians.
!b# 2ermany0According to 3randenstein, the ancestral home of the Aryans
was 2ermany. According to %en&a, the celebrated 2ermany scholar, the
Scandinavians have always spo&en -ndo0$uropean language and people from
new nations never came here to settle down. Hence, he considers
Scandinavia as the original home of Aryans. ;et again, this theory does not
/nd acceptance by ma<ority of historians.
!c# Southern 7ussia0Some historians are of the view that Southern 7ussia was
the ancestral home of the Aryans. This theory of Schrader was supported by
1r. 3. :. 2hosh, who made a linguistic study to testify it. Speci/c
archaeological evidences also sustain this theory. 3ut 1r. 2iles has however
wholly declined this theory.
Thus, it is apparent that this theory is based on the a5nity of languages.
According to this theory, the Aryans had set out from $urope and reached
*esopotamia via South of the 4aspian Sea. 3ut both these theories have
been sub<ected to severe criticism by historians and, as a result, this theory
holds little signi/cance.
!=# 4entral Asian Theory
Original Home of Aryans The chief advocate of this theory is %rof. *a8 *uller
of 2ermany. Other historians have also supported this theory. The Vedic
literature and -ranian boo& >enda0Avesta illustrates that the dwellers of
-ndia and -ran must have cohabited, because many parallels are found. 3oth
were nature worshippers and had agriculture as their chief livelihood.
Supporters of this theory indicate 4entral Asia as the original home of Aryans.
*oreover, geographical conditions also substantiate it. According to %rof. *a8
*uller, 4entral Asia was the fundamental place from where they voyaged to
various places. -t has also been established by philologists and geologists
that things li&e pine and birch trees ac&nowledged by the Aryans, are found
here.
Some historians indicate %amir or 7ussian Tur&istan as the ancestral home of
the Aryans. This is based on the inscription discovered in 3ogha9&oi in Asia
*inor. These inscriptions comprise references to 2ods, li&e lndra and Varun.
4ertain ob<ects e8cavated in $l0Armana in $gypt suggest that the -ndo0-ranian
race must have cohabited prior to "?@@ 3.4. According to $dward *ayor, the
-ndo0-ranian residents lived in some place near %amir.
However, oppositions of this theory point out that such a small place can
never be the ancestral home of a huge ma<ority of people. 'urthermore, this
land is not a very productive land. 1r. 2iles and other historians have
declined this theory. 3ut few scholars have tried to meet criticism against this
theory, by remar&ing that this land was fertile during that time and climate
and other conditions might have altered due to natural catastrophes. -n
respect to the tininess of this region, it is commented that the Aryans had
departed from this region due to this sole reason.
!A# Theory of +orth %ole or Arctic 7egion According to late 3al 2angadhar
Tila&, the Arctic region was the original home of the Aryans. He commented
that the Aryans had not disregarded their motherland and the 7igveda
comprises speci/c references to a place where harsh cold, longer dus&s and
si8 months day and night are found. These references propose that the Arctic
region must have been the original home of the Aryans. According to Tila&,
Aryans departed from this place appro8imately in B@@@ 3.4., and from there
they colonised in 4entral Asia in C@@@ 3.4. -n the none8istence of any written
records and based only on the science of Astronomy, this theory has not been
recognised by historians.
!?# -ndian Theory
1r. A. 4. 1ass, late 2anga +ath )ha, Sri ,. 1. :alla, Sri. 1. S. Trivedi etc., have
ac&nowledged this theory. According to A. 4. 1ass, 7igveda says that the
Aryans were the residents of Sapta0Sindhu. This region stretched from river
-ndus, reaching up to the Saraswati 7iver. :ashmir and %un<ab were also
under this region. 1r. Sam0purnanand also bac&s the theory of Sapta0Sindhu
as the ancestral home of the Aryans. %atrons of this theory assert that it has
not been proved till now that the Aryans came from outside and suggestions
of they being the original inhabitants of someplace near %un<ab are very
strong. Aryans viewed themselves the residents of Sapta0Sindhu. Had they
come from outside, they would have brought Vedas with them. 3ut the fact is
<ust the opposite, because the people who had penned the mantras of
7igveda, must have been residents of some place near %un<ab. 7egarding the
a5nity of -ndian and $uropean language, this theory states that in the
language of Aryans, there is a plethora of Sans&rit words, but so is not the
case with the latter. -f Aryans had come from outside, their ancient literature
!Vedas# should also have been found there. 3ut no Vedic literature has been
discovered in any place outside -ndia.
