Introduction

This project is about our country the Maldives. In this project I have included various information on the
Maldives, its people, culture and heroes. There is also information on the economy and climate of the
country. I hope to develop civic love and pride in whoever reads this project.

Introduction on our country
Maldives, or as it is officially known, Republic of The Maldives, is a country consisting of a double chain
of 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives has been a free country for most of its history excepting
the rule of the Portuguese and the British. It is also the lowest country in the planet .

Meanings symbolized by the National Flag
The red rectangle represents the boldness of our countries
heroes and their will to sacrifice their blood for the country.
The green rectangle symbolizes the peace and prosperity
The white crescent moon symbolizes the Islamic faith





The National Flower and the National Tree

The national tree is the coconut palm












The national flower is the pink rose










Geography and Climate
The Maldives consists of 1192 coral islands grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls. Maldives is the lowest
country in the world at an average of 1.5 meters above sea level in height. The Maldives has a tropical
monsoon climate. The dry season from the northeastern monsoon and the wet season from the
southwestern monsoon.


History, Religion and Culture
The famous Moroccan traveller Ibn Batutta, who visited the Maldives in the 14th century, wrote how a
Moroccan, one Abu Barakat the Berber, was believed to have been responsible for spreading Islam in the
islands.

The Maldives was a Buddhist country in its early history but the entire country converted to Islam and
the religion has been followed to the modern day.

Maldivian culture is unique. We have our own music known as boduberu and even our own movies!








People and the Language of the Maldives
The people of the Maldives have their own language. The country also has one of the highest literacy in
the world at 99%.
The people of the Maldives all follow the same religion, Islam.






Transportation in the Maldives
Land transport in the Maldives consists of mostly motorbikes and cars. The capital city has a lot of these
and residents often find it difficult to go to places in rush hour.
Sea transport in the Maldives consists of two types. Ferries to get to places within an atoll and boats to
get from atoll to atoll.
Air transport in the Maldives is the by way by which tourists arrive in the country.



Clothing
Traditionally Maldivian women have worn libaas and dhiguhedhun. Men have worn mundu.
These days women and men mostly wear jeans and shirts.


Currency
In the past cowry shells were used as currency in the Maldives. However
these days bank notes and coins are the normal currency. Before cowry
shells were used the barter system was used to exchange goods and
services .






Economy of the Maldives
The economy of the Maldives is based mainly on tourism and fishing. Tourism is the biggest contributor
to the economy while fishing comes in second. Fishing has been the main source of income for the
Country for many years but in later days the income from tourism has increased a lot. Tourism was
started in the era of President Ibrahim Nasir.

Conclusion
By doing this project I have learnt a lot about my country, its heroes and the services that the presidents
provided this country. This project has increased my awareness of my country. I enjoyed doing this
project.
