18 September 2014 No 12 By and large students are aware of the forth coming general election. They are probably more aware of all the sensationalism and side-shows, rather than the important responsibility New Zealand citizens have in casting a vote and deciding on a government. In the first instance students need to know how the election is conducted: electorate vote and party vote, how MMP works in principle and how votes are cast. They need to know about the various parties, the policies they advocate, and who the party leaders are. They need to know about their own electorate, in our locality, Clutha Southland or Te Tai Tonga. They need almost certainly to know about how a collition government is formed. The need to know about the important principle of a SECRET BALLOT. The election has been the focus of social studies in the middle school. Mrs Howell has focussed on how to make an informed decision with the Yr 9 and 10 students. Students have researched party policy on an issue eg the environment. Students have collated a cross section of parties and their policy in relation to this. Students are to present to their peers their findings and in turn link these to thier own personal beliefs, ideas and thinking. On Tuesday of this week Yr 9/10 students go through the same process that their parents will follow on Saturday and complete a Kidz Vote for the Clutha Southland electorate. These will be counted next week and comparison made with the actual results. This is great hands-on, authentic learning for these students, meaningful and purposeful. We would encourage parents to discuss the election with their children, share ideas as in time they to will have the privilege and responsibility of voting in a General Election. Did you know that only 72% of eligible votes voted a the 2011 election and only 60% of 18-24 year olds voted. Anything we can do to build our students knowledge and confidence about voting willrhopefully help improve these figures. DIDNT Lawrence Area School Gabriels Gully Gutbuster Friday 26th September 2014 Event from 12pm - 3pm Open to all Years 7-13 Social or Competitive Grades Enter as an Individual or a Team of 2-3 Bike Run Kayak Run Bike F i r e B r i g a d e A c t i o n F i r e B r i g a d e A c t i o n As part of the Level 1 & 2 Physical Education programme, students travelled to Waithauna for the afternoon on Friday 12th September, to partake in some challenging outdoor firefighting activities. The six students had to work together to run hoses, build a dam, connect a pump and put out fires. Year 11 are currently focussing on three assessments - interpersonal skills, responsible behaviours for safety, and active participation. Year 12 students were focussed on two assessments - group functioning and social responsibility. It was a fantastic, challenging, opportunity to develop our teamwork, problem solving and decision making skills, as well as making students think about how their actions impact on others. All students were able to see how vital these skills actually are in real-life situations and make the links within our local community. We thank the Waitahuna Fire Brigade for their planning and running of this event for us. Your time, effort and education were much appreciated. It was very successful and enjoyable afternoon for all involved. Students definitely showed potential - hopefully some future fire fighters in the making! Competing in C grade the team was keen to do well. Prepartion both fitness and skills had been thorough, game time however had been limited over the last month. Game 1 vs Aranui 32 - 27 Win Game 2 vs Reefton 51-7 Win Game 3 vs Greymouth 18-12 Win Game 4 vs Oxford 34-19 Win Game 5 vs East Otago 32-13 Win Semi Final vs Fiorldland 31-21 Win Six great games, with good victories some hard won, others were comfortable, paved the way for a FINAL against Aranui. This was a high stakes game with Aranui taking an early lead. Mid third quarter the gap was down to 2, game on;. Aranui again stretched the lead forcing us to play catch-up netball, risk and reward. Aranui stuck to their game winning 37-29. Disappointment was the first emotion but in reality players, coaches and supporters can be very proud of the result - second in the South Island within our grade is awesome. Congratulations to all: our coach Sarah, manager Kate, water boys, Russell and Mark, camp mum Lynda, supporters and players. The players would also like to thank their sponsors: Agricentre South, Bill Fitzgerald Contracting, Coach & Horses Inn, McCraw Spraying, Regan Maze Building, Robertson Shearing, Lyders Contracting and Millers Flat Transport.
