Bed size
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bed size refers to the dimensions of a mattress and the names by which
standard sizes are called. Beds themselves vary widely in size according
to the size of the frame and degree of ornamentation but are sold
according to the size of mattress they take. The dimensions and names
vary considerably around the world, with most countries having their
own standards and terminology. In addition, two mattresses with the
same nominal size may still vary slightly in actual dimensions, due to
manufacturing tolerances, level of padding, and support type. Most
people allow the size of their room to determine the size of their
mattress; however, the website Land of Beds recommends that a
mattress be at least 10 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it.

Note: This table uses a conversion formula from international sizes and does not accurately reect Australian
standard sizes. Where the metric system is used, sizes are specied in metric units; where other units are
normally or alternatively used, the other unit, or both, may be given; e.g., inches in the United States.
[7][8][9]
Canada and United States
Modern manufacturing conventions have resulted in a limited number of standard sizes of commercial bedding
for mattresses and box springs. Imported beds vary by country of origin as per the table above.
These dimensions are for the mattressthe actual bed frame will be a little larger in order to fully encompass
and support the mattress. The thickness of the mattress may vary considerably.

It is worth noting that there are no standardised bed sizes in the UK. Any reference to 'bed sizes' will typically,
unless specic to the bed frame dimensions, be referring to 'mattress sizes' as mattresses have a standard size
grading. These standard mattress sizes then correspond to their colloquial name as described above e.g. King
Size which is 60" ! 78" or 150 cm ! 200 cm. A common mistake is to use a mattress size as the required space
for the full dimensions of the bed and mattress.
[17]
Swedish Sizes are sold in the UK; in particular they are the standard sizes supplied by IKEA.
[18]
The European king size (180 cm ! 200 cm) as well as contemporary Italian beds and furniture have become
more popular.
[19]
Other sizes (bespoke beds) can be made to order; bed, mattress, and bed linen must all be of compatible size.
[19]
