Assignment 7-Induction Motors

This document contains 4 questions regarding induction motors. Question 1 involves calculating various parameters of a 440V, 50Hz, 2 pole induction motor operating at a slip of 0.04, including line current, power factors, losses, torque, efficiency and speed. Question 2 involves determining the operation mode, currents, powers and losses of a 3-phase induction machine mechanically coupled to a DC shunt machine. Question 3 asks to determine the rotor resistance needed to reduce the speed of a wound rotor motor driving a constant load. Question 4 asks to determine the slip, rotor frequency and induced torque of a plugged wound rotor motor when its stator phases are switched and power removed.

Assignment 7: Induction Motors
Due Date: Tuesday 29
th
April by 5:00 pm (TA room inside the EMS Lab)
Instructions: Show all the steps. Answers without calculations would not be accepted.

Q1: A 440-V, 50-Hz, 2 pole, Y-connected induction motor is rated at 75 kW. The equivalent circuit parameters are:

R1 = 0.075 R2 = 0.065 XM = 7.2 X1 = 0.17 X2 = 0.17

If the mechanical losses are 1 kW, core losses are 1.25 kW and slip is 0.04, find
a) The line current IL
b) The stator power factor
c) The rotor power factor
d) The stator copper losses
e) The air-gap power
f) The converted power
g) The induced torque
h) The load torque
i) Overall machine efficiency
j) Motors speed in rpm

Q2: A 3 induction machine is mechanically coupled to a dc shunt machine. The rating and parameters of the machines are as follows:

Induction machine: 3, 5kVA, 208V, 60Hz, 4-pole, Y-connected
R1= 0.25 X1 = 0.55 R2 = 0.35 X2 =1.1 XM = 38

DC machine: 220V, 5kW
RA = 0.4 RF = 100 Radj = 100

The induction machine is connected to a 3, 208V, 60Hz supply and the DC machine is connected to a 220V dc supply. The rotational
loss of each machine of the motor-generator set may be considered constant at 225 W.
The system rotates at 1710 rpm in the direction of the rotating field of the induction machine.
a) Determine the mode of operation of the induction machine.
b) Determine the magnitude and the direction of current in the stator winding.
c) Determine the real and reactive powers at the terminals of the induction machine and indicate their direction.
d) Determine the copper losses in the rotor circuit of the induction machine.
e) Determine the magnitude and the direction of the armature current of the dc machine.
The field current of the dc machine in the motor-generator set is decreased so that the speed of the set increases to 1890 rpm. Repeat
parts (a) to (e) for this condition.

Q3: A 3-, 460-V, 60 Hz, 6 pole wound rotor induction motor drives a constant load of 100 N.m at a speed of 1140 rpm when the rotor
terminals are short-circuited. It is required to reduce the speed of the motor to 1000 rpm by inserting resistances in the rotor circuit.
Determine the value of the resistance if the rotor winding resistance per phase is 0.2 Neglect rotational losses.
(Assume R2/s >> RTH and (XTH + X2) for low values of slip).

Q.4: A 3, 460 V, 1740 rpm, 4-pole, 60 Hz, Y-connected, wound-rotor induction motor has the following parameters per phase:
R1 = 0.25 X1 = X2 = 0.5 R2 = 0.2 XM = 30
The motor is initially running at rated conditions. The motor is stopped by plugging that is switching any two stator phases and
removing the power from the motor at the moment the rotor speed becomes zero. Determine the following, at the time immediately
after switching the stator phases.
(a) The slip
(b) The rotor circuit frequency
(c) The direction and magnitude of the induced torque.
