On March 25, 2012, a gas leak occurred on the Elgin G4 well located in the North Sea. Over the following months, specialists worked to regain control of the well through two main solutions - pumping heavy mud directly into the well, and drilling relief wells. On May 16, they were successful in killing the well by pumping over 500 cubic meters of mud into the tubing, filling the well and stopping the gas leak. Monitoring of the well and area continues as one relief well drilling continues as a contingency measure.
