In German 1000/1,000 is written/printed as either 1000, 1.000 or 1 000 - using a decimal
point (Punkt) or a space where English uses a comma. This also applies to all German

acht").

Years - Jahre
1100 elfhundert (year, number) or tausendeinhundert (number only)
For the years 1100 to 1999 in German, you must say the hundert, as for 1152
(elfhundertzweiundfnfzig) or 1864 (achtzehnhundertvierundsechzig).
1200 zwlfhundert (year, number) or tausendzweihundert (number only)
im Jahre: "Im Jahre 1350..." ("dreizehnhundertfnfzig" - "In the year 1350...") If the word
"Jahr" is left out, then the year is used by itself, with no "im" (in the) or "in." Example: "He
was born in 1958." = "Er ist im Jahre 1958 geboren." or "Er ist 1958 geboren." Similarly:
"Kolumbus hat 1492 Amerika entdeckt." ("vierzehnhundertzweiundneunzig" - "Columbus
dicovered America in 1492.")

AD, BC, BCE/CE: To convey the Christian calendar's use of AD (anno domini, "year of our
Lord") and BC (before Christ), German uses n.Chr. (nach Christus, AD) and v.Chr. (vor
Christus, BC). BCE/CE (Before the/Common Era) was used mostly in East Germany: v.u.Z.
(vor unserer Zeitrechnung, BCE/BC) and u.Z. (unserer Zeitrechnung, CE/AD).

"In the year 2001" can be spoken/written in German as "im Jahre 2001" or "im Jahr 2001"
("zweitausendeins"). If the word "Jahr" is left out, then the year is used by itself, with no
"im" (in the) or "in." Example: "He was born in (the year) 2001." = "Er ist im Jahre 2001
geboren." or "Er ist 2001 geboren."
